I was waiting at the bus stop - in a sad city - on a gloomy morning and I felt all the injustices of the world weighing down on me. All of a sudden life seemed so unfair. Then an unfortunate looking character sat down next to me and he seemed quite happy, in his own shabby way. Blessed, too. And I thought - I wonder how it feels to be an angel in a world that is indifferent to your exemplary behaviour? So I smiled at the unkempt stranger. And he smiled back at me. And things did not seem quite so bleak.

Mostly, people suggest plots to me. This is normally by grabbing my attention (Neil ... Here is a good story ...) or by gently pushing me in the right direction. When a story sounds as if it needs to be told, then I get a tremendous creative impulse ... And I cannot wait to get started...

I am half way through my next novel about a working class angel who can still perform miracles in a disillusioned modern society and I am putting together a story-board for the 'novel after next' which is about secret agents who plan to destroy a space rocket! With at least one more book expected towards the end of this year, I am very busy.

The hours. I like to write from eight till eight. With lots of teas and walk-around-the-block breaks. But sometimes I wake at four in the morning. So then I get to work right away ... And come back to bed for a nap at around 9.00. It's great to think that everyone else is on way to work. And I am having a doze!
