Hi Toni,
Thank you for your question and good wishes for Deb. Deb is currently working on Book #5 in the All Souls Series. It will be a similar book to Time's Convert in that it will look back in a prequel kind of way and also move the characters (from the All Souls World) forward in a sequel kind of way. Deb refers to it as a prequelly/sequelly book. Deb has talked about this book and other possible books on her past 2 Facebook Lives. You can find the videos for them on her author page on Facebook under the video tab.

Good question! More than you've met so far...

Libraries are an essential source for academics working in Humanities especially, but generally for academic work. The Bod has now an extensive digital collection of historical documents, but it's always amazing to have the real thing in your hands, so to speak.

This question contains spoilers...
(view spoiler)[I love the entire series! But it did feel like the Book of Life was rushed...SO many revelations and information crammed into the shortest book in the series...Was that intentional? Or did you feel rushed as well? (hide spoiler)]

The third volume of the trilogy was intentionally faster paced than the others.

Yes. Diana's best friend, Chris Roberts, is African American, for example. Amira is Indian, from the southern part of India specifically.

Probably because a lot of writers spent time at Oxford and believe (quite rightly in my opinion!) that Oxford is the most magical place on earth.

I get that Oxford and its library have been around for many centuries which gives it that feeling. I usually prefer a library with actual books versus technology, so any library that does that is magical in a sense.

There are a tremendous number of books and documents in the various libraries that comprise the Bodleian. Digital Humanities has grown and grown as an academic field. Even in four years from one visit of mine to Oxford to another, a vast number of documents and historical books had had been scanned to a very high resolution. Of course, there's nothing like holding an historical document or a book from the distant past in your own hands. I'm working on William Blake's Songs of Innocence and would dearly have loved to have viewed this rare copy (there are are not many still existing across the world), but the watercolours he and his wife applied to the illustrations are far too light sensitive to be viewed, sadly...

yes. When I found a "lost" magical book that once belonged to John Dee in Oxford's Bodleian Library! I shivered because I thought I was dreaming!
Deborah Harkness
Yes I have spent LOTS of time in the Bodleian, doing research for my dissertation as well as my first and second non-fiction books.

I lived in Oxford from 1991 to 1994, with a few breaks here and there. It is the most magical place on earth, in my opinion, so of course it was the setting I chose for the first book.

Erin - how fun that your mother actually worked at the Bodleian! The first few years of my life were lived in Oxford and I have lived there as an adult for longer and shorter periods. I am in the early stages of my academic career in the Humanities and thoroughly enjoy remarkable access the Bod gives not just historically but also its depth/breadth of sources! .. You would have observed in the TV show that they usually made the Divinity School the entrance to the old library...

great question! I look for mysterious characters--characters from the past that historians have lots of questions about for which the historical record doesn't provide answers. Then I make up the answers! :)

there are many, many messages. One of them is how important it is to have a supportive family!

bizzarely, my favorite place to write is in a hotel. I unplug the clock, put up a do not disturb sign, and close the drapes. Then I am totally unaware of whether it is night or day and can just write until I need tea or food!

great question! Each one is based on a book written during the period that I study as a scholar.

I don't believe Newton wasted his time with alchemy. I don't think he would have come up with his theory of gravity without it!
