"TW: Sexual assault, grooming

This book needed to come with trigger warnings. It sat like a rock in my gut, with so many twists that I truly did not see coming. I spent the book in dread, trying to guess and hoping I was wrong. It's going to stick with" Read more of this review 禄

“I'm going out,鈥 I said.
I loved the way that sounded. It was just like what the heroes say in war movies right before they hurl themselves out of the plane. I felt like I should wink and say something like, 鈥淪ee you around, guys鈥 and be really cool about it 鈥 but who was I kidding? I wasn't cool. I'd just sound like an idiot.”
Vicki Grant, Pigboy

“...the human race, like drops of water in that river and they flowed on, each so close to the other and yet so far apart, a nameless flood, to the sea. When all things lasted so short a time and nothing mattered very much, it seemed pitiful that men, attaching an absurd importance to trivial objects, should make themselves and one another so unhappy.”
W. Somerset Maugham, The Painted Veil

“An obscure quote might have appealed to her, but Hildy would never get a tattoo. She was afraid of needles and, more importantly, permanence. She liked to think she was still at the pupa stage of existence.”
Vicki Grant

“Looks counted, although he honestly didn't know which ones or why. He'd have thought smouldering eyes and impressive breasts or shoulders would win every time but that didn't seem to be the case. There were a lot of wild cards in the human sexuality deck.”
Vicki Grant, 36 Questions That Changed My Mind About You

“I could get in there with a total stranger and do the thirty-six questions and next thing you know I'm hopelessly smitten with some kind of, like, troll or something."
"To the best of my knowledge, no trolls have applied."
"Dumb question."
He hasn't said that. She fiddled with the buttons on her overcoat, then sort of laughed.
"Who am I kidding? The real problem would be if the troll didn't love me back.”
Vicki Grant, 36 Questions That Changed My Mind About You

“If he knew anything about heterosexual females, he knew that Paul would be a solid 9.5, if not a full 10 for most of them, despite the face his nose had obviously been broken at some point. Or maybe because of the fact. Nothing like a little DANGER: KEEP OUT sign to get some girls scaling the walls.”
