Ok, I did not love this book. I can see where vocal pedagogue Cornelius L. Reid sees its value as an “early” text on singing with scant information on technique and training, but it was kind of a slog. The language is antiquated, so it is not easy reading. The reproduction of the original publication is also not wonderful. It is really hard to read.
The format of Q&A was a bit artificial and his explanations were sadly lacking in clarity and completeness. He claims it to be for serious students of singing, and addresses the audience as such, but in fact, it is geared more toward the teacher of the serious student of singing. Also, someone who has serious issues with their singing or is a beginner is not well served with this book. It is a valuable document of the history of vocal instruction especially as it pertains to italianate Opera and vocal music.
