I was worried that there wasn’t going to be anything to keep the plot going after everything that went down in the last book, but no! This is just as interesting, and emotional, and dwells so much on character development. And the plot twist was mind-blowing, even if most things were predictable up to that point. And even though, not everything was resolved in the end of this book, it was a huge cliffhanger which builds up so much potential for the next book to dwell on.
The book is narrated through three povs – Kat, Lillia and Mary’s. I have to say this, even though the book is written by two people, it doesn’t feel like it at all. You can try all you want, but you can’t distinguish the lines between Han and Vivian, and it truly makes it all the more amazing. Also, the authors have succeeded in giving the three protagonists distinct voices that you have no difficulty in placing them whatsoever, its exceptional. Like, my edition of this book had the chapter titles missing, and still, I could easily identify who was narrating, just by the first sentence. Now, let me put it there fair and square –
KAT DeBRASSIO IS MY NEW FAVORITE CHARACTER. Totally. I love her bratty nature, her loyalty, her tendency to hide her grief, just about everything about that girl.
Also, Lillia Cho annoyed me a bit with her arrogant nature here. I mean she’s super rich, but in the first book, she’s sorta generous about it, but here she’s all showing off and spoilt.
As for Mary Zane, I didn’t like her enough in the first book either. I knew she was gonna get creepy by the end. And her non-stop pining over Reeve was absolutely unbelievable, I wanted to slap her. The side characters, Rennie, Reeve, Alex, Nadia – everyone’s so developed and have so much though put on them, it’s astonishing.
So, the point is, these characters feel so real and believable. I don’t know how they come up with such detailed characters.
It was abrupt and jaw-dropping and nerve-wracking and everything that stands for thrilling and exciting. It was a freaking roller coaster. Even though not everything is resolved in this book, the way the girls bond gives us friendship goals and the ending hints that it might all fall apart. I don’t know what to think about it, but I sure as hell jumped right into the next book after that. And the hint of paranormal and supernatural elements was creepy, and I don’t really want them there, but the authors make it sound so realistic, I think they can pull it off.
“An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. a burn for a burn. a life for a life. that's how all this got started. and that's how it's going to end.”
“It's crazy, how similar we are. Here's both of us, working through our stuff, trying to make something positive out of something really bad.”
Words cannot convey how much I enjoyed this book. Burn for Burn was a bit of a bummer for me but Jenny Han and Siobhan turned my opinion right around with this. WOW. Prepare to be amazed and rendered speechless with their stroke-inducing plot twist!!!!
