God Lor is so fucking annoying in this one, but damn I LOVE Nadir.

This was an excellent, fulfilling follow-up to the first book, with excellent continued development of Lor and solid development of Nadir and the other characters.

The slow burn enemies-to-lovers build up of Nadir and Lor was handled well, and I'm anxious to see how that relationship continues to develop in the next book.

Tuli has done a fantastic job of raising the stakes with each new development without going over the top and while keeping a consistent pacing.

Disappointing and exhausting. The vast majority of this book was spent with Lor arguing with Nadir. Repeating on a constant loop that she doesn’t like him or need him. Cut out all of that and there might not even be enough to publish as a novella.

AND THE OSCAR FOR ONE OF THE MOST FUN ENEMIES TO LOVERS RENDITIONS I’VE READ GOES TO ……

rule of the aurora king, no QUESTION.

trial of the sun queen was great, but i knew by the end of sun queen that the sequel was going to be my favorite in the series. when you know, you know, you know? and it DELIVERED.

aurora king literally has nearly everything you could possibly want: ONE HORSE. FATED MATES. DUAL POV. A LITTLE BIT OF FOUND FAMILY. ANGSTY ‘i shouldn’t feel this way for someone i loathe’ MUTUAL YEARNING. i’ve never been more grateful in my life for a dual POV. reading lor’s simmering rage and loathing only to flip to the next chapter and read nadir’s ‘GOD I HATE HER, BUT I ALSO WANT TO RIP HER PANTIES OFF’ inner monologue is so, so delicious that i’m already desperate to reread it.

that hatred, tension and genuine hostility between the two main characters fully puts the ‘enemies’ in enemies to lovers. good GOD. the book OPENS with his hand around her throat! i was a goner from chapter 1, ok????

while this book focuses on a different journey for lor, it diverges from sun queen in terms of MMCs, plot action levels, and … spice. the chapters where lor was intimate with atlas in sun queen? PBS-level content compared to the things nadir whispers to lor through this entire book.

“I just had my tongue inside you, Inmate. Didn’t you know that Fae are very territorial?”

BRB, I NEED 42 COLD SHOWERS.

alexa, play 'talk' by hozier. it’s truly so hot, and there are so many highlights in my kindle in this book alone that i’ll have to continually revisit during the interminably long wait for book 3 to drop.

beyond the spice, the plot slows down a little bit in this one — no hunger-games-level battle royale, but plenty of secret spy surveillance missions, hunting for treasures, historical secrets unraveling paralleling the plotline between lor and nadir, and tension up to your eyeballs. and while i loved every second of this (and devoured it 24 hours from it arriving onto my kindle), the only thing i wish we had more of was the more overt danger that we experienced in sun queen. though the stakes are no less dire for lor in aurora king, i missed that fighting-for-my-life, eat-or-be-eaten energy of sun queen. aurora king tends toward the more slow-burn, lie-low kind of tension that makes my heart race in uncomfortable ways. though it makes for an excellent plot device, my stress and frustration levels were through the roof. discretion and keeping a cool head were not traits lor fostered in the torture chambers of nostraza, and seeing her (and nadir!) almost blow their cover repeatedly had me nervously clutching at my blanket.

one of the greatest things about this installment is that we get to see a new side of lor. is she still the feral, feisty creature hellbent on survival? absolutely — but witnessing her stepping into herself, into her own power, and into her destiny is lovely to read. who is lor when she’s not just surviving? who could she become?

“I am not his conquest. I am not his to claim. I’m not part of their royal line. I have my own family. And I am my own fucking castle.”

MY QUEEN. MY QUEEN. in addition to giving notoriously ruin-his-life-forever grade A blowjobs, she’s an unapologetic BADASS. we stan.

i loved this, and am so, so grateful to have been selected for the ARC because i think waiting until april for this would have killed me. if you like spicy, genuine enemies to lovers fantasy romance — quick, read trial of the sun queen before rule of the aurora king releases on april 6, so you too can writhe with glee, lust, excitement, and panic for 24 straight hours.

Pre-ordered and wanted to love this...

Rule of the Aurora King fell prey to the trope game and the story suffered for it.

Moody possessive male love interest? Check
Touch her and die? Check
Force proximity? Check
Fake dating? Check

It seemed like the story cared more about checking these boxes than actually making sense. For example, Nadir being over the top possessive of Lor to the point of making huge scenes at the event where both characters are aiming to fly under the radar made absolutely no sense for what the character was supposedly trying to achieve. Also, calling her "inmate" and literally by her given name in front of people when nobody is supposed to know who she is?!!!

Again, no sense.

Lor revealed that the King tortured her for WEEKS and then expected her to be completely unrecognizable by him with no kind of cover ruined the whole fake dating plot because it was a comically bad idea.

The repetitive I hate him, I want him every other scene got boring quickly so that added with these poorly thought-out tropes left me skimming the final chapters just to make it through. Also, the pacing was weird between present day and flashbacks - at one point I completely forgot about the third POV and it was jarring to be thrown back into it.

I was really excited about this second installment because I thought Trials of the Sun Queen was amazing. 3 stars bc I'll probably finish the series off the strength of the first book.

WELL, I didn’t expect my opinion to take such a turn seeing as I really enjoyed the first

This one took me much longer to get through, because everytime he fucking called her inmate I had to put the book down

Not cute!! I was loosing my mind at it by 40% and literally cannot believe he’s still doing it til the end

She was literally falsely imprisoned and tortured by your father?? Raped by the prison warden?? Why the fuck is this the chosen nickname??

Add in his pro-prison rhetoric that takes him far far too long to question, where he seems to only focus on his anger that she experienced it rather than how horrific the prison is for way too late into the book, and it just made me so fucking uncomfortable. Took me out of the flow every single time.

He also seems to want a fucking medal for declaring he won’t rape her?

“I vow then to show her how sex can be with someone who doesn’t force her into it. I may be a lot of things, but I am not that kind of male. I will wait until she asks. Until she’s clear that she wants it.”

Cool thanks for waiting for consent???? And I’m supposed to fall in love with this man???

This happens over and over, both in what he says to her and in his thoughts. Re-assuring her she’s in control because of her trauma isn’t the same as this constant repeating that she gets a choice if she shags him or not. Which he also constantly vows to convince her to if she changes her mind and says no???

“And if there isn’t a chance? What if I say that was it and I’m done?”
His shoulders lift, the light in his eyes sparking. No one has ever said “no” to him, that much is obvious.
“Then I’m going to work very, very hard to convince you otherwise.”

EWWWWW. Coercion isn’t consent. Gross. I get she’s trying to tell us they’re mates with the whole completely drawn to each other despite wanting otherwise thing but the wording is just done so so so badly.

Serce is a great ruthless character, I was far more interested in her and Wolf’s timeline.

This is probably one of the best enemies to lovers slowburns I've ever read.🖤
Their tension, the bickering, their hatred and conflicting emotions towards one another, the spice, the banter, them getting to know each other. It's everything, I want it for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Please and thank you.

This book was very character and relationship driven, and it was done 100% right. We had reunions that brought me to tears, such stunning character development in our mc's.
It also brought a lot of backstory, partly to the main characters but also to the world as a whole.
I love the fact that these main characters are imperfect and hearing more of their backstories just opened up my heart for them even more. ❤️

I did also appreciate hearing more of the circumstances of Ouranos; previous alliances, agreements, stakeholders, hearing how things led up to this point. It was however the one part of this book that I felt was a bit tedious at times, but it's a necessary "evil" as it provides insights that the mc's don't have and sets up a very interesting contrast between the then and now.

I did also enjoy the writing (even if it had a "yah" or 7 too many - seriously, why not just write "yeah"??😭), just like in the first book it felt very inclusive and it makes it very easy to empathise with the characters. Very excited to continue on with the next one, cannot recommend this more.<3

Delicious 5 stars 🫢

I won't say too much since this is book #2 in the series, but SERIOUSLY. If you haven't started it yet, don’t wait as long as I did! The characters, the world, the plot AGH it’s all so freaking good. The world itself reels you in instantly, and if you do the audiobook like I did, their voices are dreamy and very fantasy-like. I was in love 💞

Taking a moment to say: NADIR, agh, that MANNNNN.

“𝑺𝒉𝒆’𝒔 𝒎𝒊𝒏𝒆. 𝑰 𝒅𝒐𝒏’𝒕 𝒌𝒏𝒐𝒘 𝒘𝒉𝒚 𝑰 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒊𝒆𝒗𝒆 𝒊𝒕 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒔𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒗𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏, 𝒃𝒖𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒆𝒑 𝒊𝒏 𝒎𝒚 𝒃𝒐𝒏𝒆𝒔, 𝑰 𝒌𝒏𝒘 𝒔𝒉𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝒕𝒐 𝒎𝒆. 𝑨𝒏𝒅 𝑰’𝒍𝒍 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒃𝒆𝒇𝒐𝒓𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒚𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒆𝒍𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒖𝒄𝒉𝒆𝒔 𝒉𝒆𝒓.”

Anyway, the plot picks up right where book one leaves off, with a tiny 5-week time skip, and so many questions left unanswered from the first book. Trust me, some of them still won’t be answered here lol it's totally on purpose and sooo frustrating in the best way!

I’m definitely diving into book 3 soon. The best part? The series is finished, so don't wait start this now!

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Even if this book is marginally more captivating and interesting than the first one, I am still unwilling to give it a higher rating because so many things have not improved. Depending on what the upcoming books bring, I may raise this rating to three stars or higher, but for now, regrettably, this is the best I can manage. Considering how little I can add compared to the first book in the series, this review may likewise be rather brief.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ “I’m missing something vital about this entire situation.”

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍˗ˏˋ★‿︵‧ ˚ ₊⊹ short summary
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Lor finds herself in the midst of political machinations once more after being rescued—or rather, abducted—by the grumpy Aurora Prince. Despite her denial, she is forced to put her trust in the prince, who seems to do anything to gain her trust.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Having decided to finally join forces against their shared foe, Lor and Nadir begin the hunt for the Heart Crown, the single item that could help them. Meanwhile, Lor finds it more difficult to resist the lust and attraction she feels for the attractive man who is assisting her since she is compelled to play the role of the prince's newest plaything.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Therefore, you will be reading about 400 pages of lust-filled thoughts and unholy touches sprinkled with some moments of actual search for the crown.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍˗ˏˋ★‿︵‧ ˚ ₊⊹ honest thoughts
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Despite being slightly better than the first book, this was not the captivating, spectacular novel I had been hoping for.; not even close to it, honestly. The majority of the book is devoted to the main characters' yearning for one another and their ongoing tug-of-war relationship, which is primarily imposed by the FMC's inability to decide on anything.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ Several times, I was more fascinated and engaged in the chapters that described the historical events that truly brought up Ouranos as it is today. Since the current events were merely getting repetitious and not really going in any direction, my attention was quickly gripped by the characters belonging to the past.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ While the book proved to be slightly entertaining due to the constant banter between the characters, I admit that I found the action to be slightly lacking. There was not much to the plot until the book's final few chapters, except from the frequent parties, the pretending, and the passionate relationship between the two main characters, who were hardly able to resist devouring one another.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⋅ ☾ And finally, this is NOT the slow burn romance or the enemies to lovers you are promised. It seems that I am repeating this more and more lately, but if the characters start lusting after each other 30 pages in, I'd like to kindly ask the authors to stop marketing their books as slowburn romances. The fact that Lor literally wants to devour Nadir, yet constantly stops him before things go further between them only because she is either moody or scared, does not make this a slow burn. Not to mention that they even go far enough plenty of times in this book.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍˗ˏˋ★‿︵‧ ˚ ₊⊹ characters
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I genuinely do not want to talk about these characters, mainly because I have nothing good to say about them, but let me just share some frustrations.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ✧ Lor - Simply put, she is unlikeable. Although I acknowledge that she has endured a great deal and has had to go through many terrible things, this does not justify her disdain for everyone and everything. She is impetuous, she does not listen to people even when they have shown themselves to be reliable, and in the worst circumstances, she is simply too obstinate for her own good.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ✧ Nadir - Despite all the absurd things the FMC does, this man has the patience of a saint. Is he also a little impatient and pushy? Indeed. He is still far superior to Lor, though. But it is my sincere hope that the author would choose to give this man a personality. There is little else to his character development except from his persistent want and drool over the bare minimum he receives from Lor.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ✧ Amya, Mael, Willow, Tristan - I honestly wish there had been a lot more of these characters in this book. In terms of plot and action, I am confident they could have added a lot more to this book. Regretfully, they did not receive the attention they merited in order to accomplish this.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍˗ˏˋ★‿︵‧ ˚ ₊⊹ should you read this?
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Most likely not; this is not something you should read. However, continue reading if, like me, you wanted to start this series in the first place and are now compelled to finish it.
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ I feel like I need to make it clear that this isn't necessarily a bad book, it is just simply too underwhelming in terms of plot and action for its length. There is a huge lack of character development; there aren't many events happening and the ones that are happening are becoming repetitive at one point; and there is no real chemistry between the characters either, which makes it hard for you to resonate with the people you are reading about.

ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ Although there is potential for this series, I am now only honestly continuing it because I am a little interested in where the plot is headed and how it will all end. Nevertheless, I still have some modest hopes for it.

⊹₊┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ✿ㆍ┈ㆍ┈ㆍ┈₊⊹
ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ᯓ ✿ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍pre-reading ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ⪼ ㅤ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ ‍‍‍‍‍‍ please do not let this be as bad as the first one because i cannot start my year like this 🙏🏻

Honestly pretty disappointed ☹️. I devoured the first book, but the seconds writing was bad. There was soooo much inner monologue that sounded so cheesy and fake that it was just hard to read. Barely any descriptions of anything. Story itself was alright which
is why I gave it three stars.

I really wanted to like this book. I enjoyed the first one. However, nothing happened. It was basically the two of them having the same two conversations over and over again. Total monotony. The closer I got to the end of the book, I thought surely there would be something, anything. Nope.

4 - ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

It’s addictive. The way she hates me. The way she burns with that fire that glows so white hot, I ache whenever she looks at me. Like she’s always just on the edge of erupting and blowing my entire life to pieces. Not that I’ve ever been attracted to reserved or docile women, but she isn’t just wild, she’s practically feral, and I can’t stop fucking thinking about her.

We finally get some delicious and steamy slowburn in Rule of the Aurora King and we continue in the story five weeks after the events of the first book.

While it's predecessor focused on a deadly contest and court politics, this installment revolves around the quest to obtain an ancient artefact tied to Lor's past and the puzzle pieces begin to fit together.

This was unexpectedly spicy though I'm in no way complaining. The author warned there will be more angst and pining and she delivered!

While it might be a just tad slower in pacing, it is building up towards something which I expect will unfold in the two remaining books.

Onto Fate of the Sun King (book 3)!

Check my review for the Trial of the Sun Queen for the content warnings.

Update:
Ok easily one of the best romantasy books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The pining? The banter?? THE YEARNING?! Good god. Then you add in this incredible world with such a unique magic system?! I just. Wow. I can’t stop thinking about it. My one complaint, is I really really REALLY hate the nickname he gives her haha.

I’ll write a more coherent review later bc right now I’m just like “WTF THIS IS SO GOOD READ IT”, and while that’s obviously true, this series deserves a well thought out review lol.

I simply can't read on.

Book 1 was fun, okay?
There were many flaws, but I overlooked them for the sake of the plot... but book 2?
Absolute cringe.

So many things just didn't make sense, and the dynamic between Nadir and Lor was so bad. SO BAD.

I'm so sorry, but just no.

i’m disappointed. this book was definitely better than the first one. the chemistry between mmc and fmc was there and it was good until it wasn’t but about that later. i won’t continue the series bc my eyes are hurting from all eyerolling. 🙄🙄🙄

wanted to cry when there was a new pov. 😭😭😭 it ruined TOG and CC for me. also the time jump was in the new pov… i didn’t care what this new old character did 286 years ago, why couldn’t it be some story in a book? or someone’s memory of them?

fine, i appreciated serce just bc she wasn’t cowering before atlas.
“If he proved worthy, she might even allow him to join her from time to time.”

bad points for serce.

“she’d never looked closely enough to understand the differences between the low fae’s various species.”

the only thing i liked about serce at the end was her love for wolf. they were wonderful together. i wished the fmc lor was like serce in this department.

at the beginning nadir was acting like an immature child. no wonder he was only a prince. at least atlas was already a king. every male in this series had some pathetic excuse for his behavior. in the last book it was like “because atlas is just a male and can’t control his urges”.🙄🙄🙄

“I know Nadir can come off as…abrasive,” Amya says. “But it’s just because he feels so much. It’s hard for him to be casual about anything.”

i thought they were too careless coming to aurora under king’s nose. it was going to backfire eventually. and it did.

i liked the tension and chemistry, it was definitely better than the first book. but midway the book i wished they fucked already. enough was enough. they didn’t fuck.

what the fuck was that at a party with vale? all the progress between nadir and lor gone. so disappointing. i decided i hate when main characters decide to “break up”. couldn’t they see they were stronger together? fmc flipped out about nadir’s possessiveness and his careless comment about her being whore which he apologized for later..? that’s all or did i miss something? bc in my opinion fmc made a bigger deal about it than it really was.

at one point i wanted to smack fmc. she ruined the romantic plot for me. she was a crybaby about everything else. the plot was okay but the heroine annoyed me.

i thought they picked terrible time and place to have sex they didn’t have sex for the first time. they found the crown so there obviously appeared some shift in magic and everyone felt it. didn’t they understand the danger or that they should get out of the location quickly?? i wasn’t surprised when the aurora king showed up.

so what happened in this book? fmc reunited with her siblings and they found the crown. that’s all. 🤡🤡🤡 nothing happened in romantic arc bc fmc ruined everything just bc some ancient artifact told her “that it will ruin her”. what was the point of this book? there was no climax. no returning of her power or glorious smut scenes. at one point i began to pity mmc bc he deserved better.

this book is an acomaf wannabe flop which is disappointing because i saw the potential in the first book i really did!

his cute quirky nickname for her is inmate. a girl who was falsely imprisoned and tortured by his father at age 12. he also calls her this nickname IN FRONT OF PEOPLE? when they aren’t supposed to know her identity? bffr

the way he was pro prison was so icky and rather than giving a single shit about how horrible their prison system is, he only decided that maybe prison bad is because of how the prison treated HER

the whole story is trying to convince you that he may be dark and broody but he deserves to be king but this man is so self-righteous he thinks he deserves a fucking award for not raping her ????

“i vow to show her how sex can be with someone who won’t force her into it. i may be a lot of things, but i am not that kind of male. i will wait until she asks. until she’s clear she wants it.”

and then he goes on to say later that he’s going to convince her that she wants to have sex with him. congrats king you’re really nailing this whole upstanding morality thing 😍😍😍

the “steam” in this book felt so forced the mates trope was not troping the way it should have! very clunky and poorly written build up im so tired of the “i hate him” “i want him” every other sentence !!!

This book was soo much fun to read! I love reading Nadirs POV. the story is so easy to understand and I was just having a fun time. The only thing I kept it from being 5 stars was Lors indecisiveness. That was a pain to read. She had me literally screaming. But besides that, definitely a good time!

P. S. Moc prosím všechny překladatele: mohli byste jednou provždy odstranit výraz „číča“ ze slovníku, pokud nebudete mluvit o kočce? 🙈 A když už jsme u toho, tak „kolík“ taky. Děkuji za všechny čtenáře!

This book saved me from a reading slump. But now I fear I’m going to be in a book hangover…I loved every second of this installment. This book continues right where we left off after Trials of the Sun Queen. I love how strong and fierce Lor is, even after all the horrible things she has been through. She is 100% unapologetically herself. She may be impulsive and rash at times, but she isn’t stupid about it. And Nadir!! He is a cinnamon roll at heart. Even if he can be a territorial Fae asshole 😂 we love him for it. There’s forced proximity, one bed, touch her and die, fated mates, sibling bonds, flash backs, and so many other top tier tropes that fit seamlessly into the story. That cliffhanger though 😒 Nisha is trying to torture us. Thank you to Nisha for the earc. I will be impatiently waiting for book 3.

3.5⭐️

I’m exited to see where the next book goes. There was one pov I hated and it took all my energy to get through it but I think it was a need for the story.

It also felt a bit repetitive at times but it was a fun read with some spice🌶️

I don’t even know if I can put words to how much I loved this book. It took me by surprise that I loved this series so much, it’s easily one of my new favorites. I literally read this in one day, that’s how well it’s written and how addicting it is.

First things first, we FINALLY we get Lor and Nadir together. Nadir’s mysterious POV had me wanting more the entire first book and I am so happy we finally see them interact in Rule of the Aurora King. They make unlikely allies and I am here for it.

You could cut the sexual tension between Nadir and Lor with a knife. Forced proximity and fake dating a in fantasy book?! YES PLEASE. And there’s the only one horse trope. I repeat, it has the only one horse trope! I love this trope just as much, if not more, than the only one bed trope. Nadir is sexy and I loved seeing him and Lor navigate the unwanted feelings they have toward eachother. The hate to love is chefs kiss. Nadir has an unexpectedly dirty mouth and it was so sexy. And his possessiveness oh my.

The love that Lor and her siblings have for each other is so heartwarming and was one of my favorite parts of this book. They are ride or die for each other. If something happens to either one of Lor’s siblings, I will riot. They have been through so much and don’t deserve anything else bad to happen to them.

Parts of this book are utterly heart wrenching and had me hurting alongside the characters.

Honestly the way this plot went was so unexpected I loved it. They are on a quest to find a lost artifact and are plotting against the Aurora king.

I am so impressed with the world building in this series. Nisha was able to create a beautifully intricate world that is still so easy for the reader to understand. I was intrigued by the different Fae courts and rulers and liked getting out of the Sun kingdom for this book.

The ending was phenomenal and built up so well. I’m left with so many questions and super excited for the next book. If you trust my recommendations, PLEASE read this series, you will not regret it.

Things to expect:
Forced proximity
Hate to lovers
Strong sibling love
Delicious tension
Quest to find a lost artifact
Dual timeline
Spice: 2/5
