Keith Steinbaum’s In Lieu of Flowers is a captivating blend of supernatural horror and deep emotional resonance. The story begins with a failed kidnapping in post-WWI Romania, where a Romani cobbler named Gunari steals an infant, Petre, whose fate is tied to dark forces. Fast-forward to present-day Los Angeles, where Petre, now Peter Levy, is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, setting the stage for a supernatural battle between good and evil. The novel’s protagonist, Terrence Covington, a cemetery employee, is thrust into this conflict as he confronts the Devil’s plans to claim Peter’s soul. Steinbaum masterfully weaves together Romanian folklore, real-world history, and supernatural suspense, creating a haunting and immersive atmosphere.

What makes this book truly stand out is its emotional depth. The story explores powerful themes of love, sacrifice, and redemption, especially through the bond between a mother and her child. Naomi’s love for her son transcends death, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness. There’s also a quiet yet poignant romantic element, where a wife helps her husband from beyond the grave, showcasing love’s enduring power. The characters are well-developed, flawed, and relatable, making their journeys all the more impactful as they battle both external evil and internal struggles.

In Lieu of Flowers is a page-turner that combines supernatural tension with thought-provoking reflections on the consequences of our choices. Steinbaum's ability to create suspense while grounding the horror in real human emotion makes the novel unforgettable. It’s a compelling read that lingers long after the last page, leaving readers reflecting on the power of love, the weight of decisions, and the possibility of redemption. If you enjoy supernatural thrillers with heart, this book is a must-read.

A wonderful tale of love and heroism in the face unspeakable horror from beyond the grave.

In Lieu of Flowers takes us from the magic of the Roma or gypsies in post-WWI Romania to the gravesites of Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles, 2017. Author Keith Steinbaum skillfully weaves together the disturbing tale of the foiled attempt to kidnap a baby, Petre, in Bucharest, who then becomes the decorated American airman, Peter Levy, ultimately buried next to his mother at Evergreen. Without revealing the how’s and why’s here, a cemetery employee, Terrence Covington, becomes the central figure in the fight against the Devil’s long time plans to usurp Peter’s soul after a kidnapping attempt failed when Peter was an infant in Romania. As death of innocent souls ensue and the flames of social chaos explode, two powerful supernatural forces clash in a life defining battle of good versus evil.

Much is woven into this wonderful book: a story of a family in a faraway land, a tale of immigration, heroism during the war, cross-cultural love and friendship, and underneath it all is a disturbing but mesmerizing tale of unspeakable horror from beyond the grave.

From the very first glance, In Lieu of Flowers captivates with its haunting premise. The idea of restless spirits in Evergreen Cemetery, delivering a warning from beyond the grave, immediately evokes curiosity and a sense of eerie anticipation.

The storyline masterfully intertwines the fates of two graveyard occupants, one with a dire warning and the other, the subject of that warning. Steinbaum takes us on a thrilling journey that echoes the chilling atmospheres of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Island of Dr. Moreau, and The Exorcist. Each twist and turn reveals deeper layers of mystery and suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats.

Keith Steinbaum's writing style is both evocative and immersive. He skillfully balances detailed descriptions with brisk pacing, ensuring that the story never loses its grip. The dark, almost gothic tone of the narrative is perfectly suited to the book’s themes, making it a compelling read for fans of classic and contemporary horror alike.

In Lieu of Flowers explores themes of life, death, and the lingering impact of unresolved issues. It delves into the notion that death is not always the end, but rather the beginning of a new, often unsettling journey. The book challenges readers to consider the weight of their actions and the potential for redemption or retribution beyond the grave.

I found In Lieu of Flowers to be a gripping and thought-provoking read. Keith's ability to create a chilling atmosphere while delivering a story with emotional depth is truly impressive. The book's homage to classic horror literature, combined with its original storyline, makes it a standout in the genre.

Overall For those who enjoy a good scare and a story that lingers long after the final page, this book is a must-read. Keith Steinbaum has crafted a tale that not only entertains but also leaves readers contemplating the thin veil between life and death. Highly recommended for fans of horror and supernatural fiction.

Enduring love and dark forces collide in Steinbaum’s labyrinthine blending of suspense, dread, and psychological tension. A malevolent ancient being is seeking to claim a soul for its nefarious purpose. As Terrence and Rabbi Michael navigate a web of unspeakable horrors and dark prophecies, they must confront their own past traumas and fears to protect their souls and those they hold dear.

Through vivid descriptions and skillful portrayal, Steinbaum imbues the setting with an eerie ambiance, drawing readers into its mysterious allure: Evergreen Cemetery serves not just as a mere setting, but rather a living entity that influences the characters’ actions and emotions, adding to the immersive atmosphere of the story.

The pacing is swift, and the characterization top-notch. Terrence and Juana’s journey from acquaintances to partners is marked by shared experiences and hardships, while their love is portrayed with tenderness and vulnerability. Sarah’s presence adds a touch of warmth and humanity. The portrayal of the ancient being as a force of chaos and death carries thematic significance, reflecting larger theme of good versus evil.

The secondary cast is fully fleshed-out. One of the most striking aspects of Steinbaum’s writing is his ability to build and sustain suspense throughout the story. His use of ominous foreshadowing, cryptic messages, and unexpected plot twists keeps the reader engaged. Additionally, the exploration of themes such as guilt, redemption, fate, and the fear of the unknown adds depth and complexity to the narrative, prompting readers to reflect on the darker aspects of human nature and the mysteries that lie beyond our understanding. A stunner.

Imagine you're caught in a situation where you make a choice, thinking it’s just for survival, only to realize it might have doomed you and others in ways you can’t even fathom. That’s exactly what happens in In Lieu of Flowers by Keith Steinbaum—a story that grips you with its eerie, dark twists from the very start.

This isn’t your typical thriller. Set against a backdrop of Romanian myths and dark folklore, the book introduces us to Gunari, a Romani cobbler who, driven by desperation, kidnaps a baby for money. But this is no ordinary child—his fate is tied to something far more sinister. As events unfold, the story drags you into a world where past sins refuse to stay buried, and the supernatural feels all too real.

Keith Steinbaum knows how to create a page-turner. With his previous works like The Poe Consequence, he’s proven himself as a master at weaving suspense with historical depth. His stories don’t just entertain; they make you think, they haunt you. Steinbaum’s ability to bring folklore to life, while grounding it in real historical contexts, sets his writing apart.

What makes this book so unique is how it blends Romanian mythology with real, historical events. The strigoi—troubled spirits from Romanian lore—aren’t just creepy elements thrown in for effect; they’re integral to the plot, giving the story an authentic, unsettling vibe that stays with you. Steinbaum’s atmospheric writing style makes you feel the tension, almost as if you’re there, living the nightmare alongside the characters.

At its core, In Lieu of Flowers is about the choices we make and how they ripple through time. Gunari’s struggle is one many of us can relate to—the lengths we go to for family, the moral lines we cross out of desperation. The characters are flawed, real, and deeply human, making their journeys all the more relatable and impactful.

There’s a scene where Gunari finally understands the true cost of what he’s done—it’s gut-wrenching. His realization that he’s entangled himself and his loved ones in something far darker than he imagined hits hard. And then there’s Naomi, the mother of the stolen child, whose agony and relentless search bring out the rawest emotions. These moments aren’t just sad—they’re powerful, reminding us of the weight our decisions carry.

Steinbaum’s strength lies in his ability to create a rich, atmospheric world that feels both foreign and eerily familiar. However, the dense plot and multiple layers might feel overwhelming to some. But if you’re someone who loves diving deep into intricate stories with a supernatural twist, this book is a gem.

In Lieu of Flowers left me thinking about how our choices echo through time, and how sometimes, we might not realize the full extent of their impact until it’s too late. The scene that I can’t shake off is when Gunari realizes he’s crossed a line from which there’s no return. This book is haunting in the best way possible, leaving you to ponder what you would do in his place.

What choices have you made that left you thinking “what if”? Have you ever felt like you were caught in something bigger than yourself? I’d love to hear your thoughts—let’s chat in the comments!

In *In Lieu of Flowers*, Keith Steinbaum .The story begins with a disturbing yet captivating account of a failed kidnapping attempt on a Romanian baby named Petre, who grows up to become the decorated American airman, Peter Levy. This haunting prologue sets the stage for a clash between formidable supernatural forces and the everyday lives of ordinary people.

At the heart of the narrative is Terrence Covington, a cemetery employee who becomes embroiled in a desperate struggle against the Devil’s sinister schemes. Ever wondered what secrets the dead might keep? In Lieu of Flowers by Keith Steinbaum takes you deep into Evergreen Cemetery, where most souls rest in peace—except for two. And trust me, they have some unfinished business. 😱👻

Keith masterfully crafts a chilling tale that echoes the dark tones of classics like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and The Exorcist. The story dives into a world where death is merely the beginning, setting the stage for a suspenseful and eerie journey. The tension builds as one spirit carries a warning, and the other... well, let’s just say you don’t want to be the one they’re warning about.

The atmosphere in *In Lieu of Flowers* is hauntingly vivid, pulling you into the cemetery’s shadowy depths. With every turn of the page, you’re left wondering what will happen next and who—or what—might be lurking in the darkness. 🌑📚

If you’re a fan of horror with a psychological twist, this book is for you. Keith’s storytelling will keep you on edge, making you question what really lies beyond the grave. Ready to be haunted? This book is your next must-read! 🪦🔮

With the beginning few chapters, I wasn’t sure what exactly was I reading. Attempting child kidnapping, evil omens, foretelling of the future, and all that before the start of the world wars that changed human history. But as the story progressed, I realized it was about love and acceptance, moving forward, having faith in something bigger than ourselves, and accepting that some things can never be explained. It had me in tears, especially when Terence lost Juana. And it was comforting knowing Juana still looks out for Terence in the afterlife. Good read and worth the time!.

Keith Steinbaum does it again! What a great and unique horror/thriller! Two people-a graveskeeeper, Terrence whose wife recently passed away and a Rabbi Michael are pitted again against dark Supernatural in a cemetery, and must risk their very lives to thwart this evil
Though they seem to be alone, they have some forces of their own to combat it. I loved this book! Steinbaum did much careful research on Jewish customs and Romani customs and weaves these into his story. Fascinating! Check it out for an entertaining, edge of your seat suspense with horror story with an unexpected ending that blew me away. Can't wait for Steinbaum's next book.
