It's 1596 and The Great Collective - a secret society of self-styled geniuses - are granted untold powers by a mysterious entity called The Space. With this comes immortality, but at an untold cost...
Peter Smith can only live to thirty-six, constantly dying and re-living his short life throughout history as his memories dilute. Wishing to do good with his new skills, he tries to solve the gruesome murder of Thaddeus Hobble's wife. But, he comes up against stiff opposition from his fellow men and soon finds himself questioning his own morals and motives. As the collective witness, and soon perpetrate, the worst horrors imaginable, what deadliness will their pain and hate brew into?
Peter dreams of a distant future where he will grow old and die with the woman he loves, but first he must try to remember from one life to the next no matter how painful it is. In 1738 The Space shows him the actions of the 20th century's most evil man - as his lives trundle on, can Peter recall what he knows in time to stop the killing of millions?
Well what can I say about this book....I'm not sure I have the words to explain but I can tell you I know that I want to read more.
I will say that it took a good few pages for me to get used to the writing style, but once I got into the grove it was easy going. I thought the story was really interesting and well planned out to be able to travel through time periods smoothly.
There was more than one scene in this book that made me cringe and wonder what the heck I was reading and it is for that reason that I have docked a star as it was too much for me, however the scenes do work within the context of the story they're just not my cup of tea.
Overall an interesting and very different read. I have the next 4 books in the series so I look forward to seeing where they take me.
I rarely give a book anything less than a 3 star rating, because I usually find something good in the book....this one was horrible from page one. I kept reading thinking it would get better, but it just got worse. I finished the book so I could justify the 1 star rating, but I am happy to leave this one in the dust and never look back.
The story and cover art were so promising....I imagined a book that would be a reverse of the Benjamin Button movie. Instead, the book is choppy, ideas seem to float out in space, barely grabbed then released again. At times I felt like the author got his chapters written by taking LSD and then writing out the dreams he had while under its spell.
I received this book for free via ÀÏ»¢»úÎÈÓ®·½·¨ First Reads.
I found the book to be an interesting and unusual read. There is sex, violence and death in the pages as well. It is a good and original story which I enjoyed. It left plenty of room for forthcoming sequels which I will make an attempt to find in the future.
I don't give away spoilers in my reviews but the book starts in 1580 and continues into the 21st century based on the lives of the main characters. I feel the book could have been twice or three times as long but that might be where the sequels come in. One final note is for some reason I will not be fancying eating sausages for a while after reading it.
I received this book via a ÀÏ»¢»úÎÈÓ®·½·¨ giveaway and was instantly intrigued by the title. It's not my usual genre but I found the first half really entertaining - an interesting concept and strong storyline. For me though the second half didn't have the same appeal - it was far more disjointed and I felt that the book lost it's way a little. There's some pretty graphic description throughout and if you're of a sensitive nature you may want to approach with a little caution. This certainly wasn't an issue for me but I wish the enjoyment of the first half had carried through to the end.
I won this book in the ÀÏ»¢»úÎÈÓ®·½·¨ First Reads Giveaway a while ago, but have only just got around to reading it.
This was quite an enjoyable read, even though it is not usually the type of book that I would usually select to read. I wouldn't say that this book was a page turner, but the story certainly held my interest. I think I would try more books by this author.
I can't decide if this is just not my cup of tea, or a complete mishmash. I gave up at 56%, realizing I simply don't care about the story (whatever the hell the story is - I still have no clue) or the characters.
I bought this book from the author at the Cleethorpes geeks comic con. I actually bought four in this series, although I have only completed reading this one.
I found the story to be interesting and unusual. Some good characters and this book left me wanting to find out more!
