Lauren Bailey may be a romantic at heart, but after a decade of matchmaking schemes gone wrong, there's only one match she's committed to now--the one that will make her a mother. Lauren is a dedicated first grade teacher in Idaho, and her love for children has led her to the path of international adoption. To satisfy her adoption agency's requirements, she gladly agreed to remain single for the foreseeable future; however, just as her long wait comes to an end, Lauren is blindsided by a complication she never saw coming: Joshua Avery.

Joshua may be a substitute teacher by day, but Lauren finds his passion for creating educational technology as fascinating as his antics in the classroom. Though she does her best to downplay the undeniable connection between them, his relentless pursuit of her heart puts her commitment to stay unattached to the test and causes her once-firm conviction to waver.

With an impossible decision looming, Lauren might very well find herself choosing between the two deepest desires of her heart . . . even if saying yes to one means letting go of the other.

With a to-die-for hero, a winsome heroine and a deep look at the dreams we foster, large and small, "Before I Called You Mine" is a treatise on hope. I loved how Deese pours her soul into a message close to her own heart. The ache of loss and uncertainty, of waiting and moments of despair are ones so universal, the reader can transpose any similar moment in their own life experience onto Lauren's journey.

This is very much overt Christian fiction and will resonate most deeply with readers for whom this is their core belief. Yet, it is never preachy; rather it meets at the intersection of faith and doubt where the loudest voice is not what seems to be constantly sought yet the small, still voice in the intervals between. Lauren's path will be familiar to so many while her struggles and human moments allow you to recall similar trajectories in your own lives: be they spiritually charged or not.

I loved the constant sense of humour even in the moments of pressure and despair. And...because this bears repeating... I love, love, loved the hero. What a gent he is. A modern knight who is at once confident and meek, patient and persistent. Deese crafts a brilliant balance and weaves a love story out of friendship, a family out of sadness.

I encourage readers to take their time with this book: for though it is a lovely romantic comedy with some absolutely wonderfully whimsical moments ( dinosaurs!), it is also a deep dive into the expectations we put on faith and prayer and the posits we make for the world to align with our timing. It ensures that we recognize that often the beauty in our best laid schedules happens in the in-betweens. The hurdles. The slivers of love that peek in the cracks and flourish fully when we surrender our own resolves.

Fantastic book!

First, if you don't fall in love with Joshua while you are reading this book, then you are not human.

With immense sensitivity and grace, Deese tackles the subject of motherhood, international adoption and family with great insight and heartfelt emotion. This book is one of those you don't easily forget and will leave you changed. There are laugh out loud moments and heart-wrenching, tear-inducing moments which meld together in a beautiful symphony to form a story that reflects the heart of God, His calling on our lives and His unconditional, adoptive, agape love.

Be warned, you won't be able to put this one down.

I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. My opinions are my own.

Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese - 5 Star Favorite
BLOG POST REVIEW:

This book is a new favorite of all time. Such a beautiful story that is emotionally rich, exploring themes of love, adoption, motherhood, romance, sacrifice and challenges of family and life in general. This is a Christian Fiction following Lauren, a dedicated Elementary School teacher who has longed dreamed of becoming a mother through international adoption. She feels like this is the Lord's plan in her life. Her adoption process comes with one strict condition --she must remain single until the adoption process is finalized. Lauren has committed herself to this journey but she finds herself questioning what she should do -- where does the Lord intend for things to go? Joshua, a kindhearted substitute teacher, comes along and she wrestles with some difficult choices.

Nicole Deese has portrayed the depth of her emotions so perfectly, making the reader truly relate and feel everything with her.

As a special needs Mama, this book especially touched my heart from the aspect of her adopting a child with a health condition. Lauren is relatable and inspiring and seeing her relationship grow with Joshua was perfection as his patience and understanding made him a great guy to root for in this book. The relationship made so much sense as it was a slow build, tender and deeply emotional between them.

I also found Lauren's struggles with her mother and sister very relatable in some ways. Such a rollercoaster of emotions and the ending between them was very precious - making me tear up. I actually cried in several places of this book, as Nicole delivered such a heartfelt story. Lauren trusted God's timing, even when it hurt in the process.

I highly recommend this book. It's authentic, relatable, emotional, faith filled and just powerful.

Before I Called You Mine is a poignant, heart-warming story. Lauren is a likeable lead, one easy to empathize with even when you may not agree with everything she’s doing. Truly she is a breath of fresh air, with Deese’s first person narration bringing to life an altogether realistic main character. She is deep into her goal of international adoption, but a possible kink comes up in her plan, when she meets the man of her dreams. Josh is a huge highlight of this story. I’m not sure how Deese manages to strike the perfect balance in a male lead, but Josh is it. Confident and persistent, yet not pushy, he is the epitome of the trend I’m loving right now, which is that of a quiet strength – a true gentleman. However, choosing him means losing the opportunity to adopt, something that she feels deeply called to do.

Speaking of balance, this novel strikes the right notes between heartache and hope. It feels entirely plausible and real, yet also like an impossibly hard situation. The story is bittersweet at times, highlighting how sometimes our dreams may conflict with each other and how those conflicts can be reconciled – if they can be reconciled at all. It’s also about finding peace regardless of the circumstance, and that is always a welcome reminder for me. This is very much a faith-filled novel, but I never feel like anything is preachy; it suits the circumstances that Lauren finds herself in very well. It’s not without its moments of levity. I often had a big smile on my face while reading this story

The elementary school setting feels very realistic, however, as a school librarian myself, I found the image she portrayed of the librarian to be dated. School libraries are rarely just a story time anymore; we are expected to do lessons and activities with students (even though I do try to read a lot of stories). It’s a very busy, demanding job, and I just wanted to make note of that as it’s something that I have a personal connection. I kind of stalled out a bit with that part, but once I got past it, I was enthralled by the story and hardly put it down.

This story does have a happy ending, but it is hard won indeed. That makes it that much sweeter, in this reader’s opinion. This is not the typical romantic contemporary, but transcends a simple romance, becoming a unique story of perceived missed opportunities and the joys that they can bring at the journey’s end.

I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher; I was not required to post a positive review, and the opinions expressed here are my own.

"He tilted my face up to his, kissing me with a tenderness that begged for tears. Because I'd fallen in love with him. There was no other way to spin it. No other way to write this story. I was in love with Joshua Avery, and everything in me wanted that to be enough."

From Before I Called You Mine by Nicole Deese

Lauren Bailey has been matched up with various men over the past decade but one thing or another leads to these relationships to not work out.
She's satisfied with life, being an elementary school teacher she has plenty of children though certain ones hold a special place in her heart and memory.
Her heart years for a child to call her own though and she's been on an adoption list for several years through a foreign adoption agency.
Enter Joshua Avery substitute teacher at the school where she teaches. He's not just another man though , he has such a passion for teaching the children and creating educational technology that Lauren's heart can't help but to come alive in his presence.
She must fight the awakening of her heart for the first time in a long time though, this is not the times for loves blossoming to awaken.
The adoption agency has strict rules about marriage and adoption and she must follow them or be disqualified from adopting.
He relentlessly pursues her heart though and her resolve is weakening . Can she stay unattached as she's put to the test as never before?
The love of a man or the love of a child? Is it fair to have to make this heart wrenching choice? Will she be able to choose between the two deepest desires of her heart?
Excellent book, this one will really make you pause to appreciate all you have in your life, all of God's blessings that shine down upon you!

I was given a complimentary copy of this book. Thank you.

Well, I'm gobsmacked. I'm not sure how to review this book because there is so much I want to say but I can't without posting spoilers. Before I Called You Mine would definitely make for an inspiring book club read. So much to talk about with so many possible viewpoints...just wow!

This is so much more than a love story -- though it's an incredibly stirring one and Joshua makes the top ten on my bookish heroes list. But it's the foreign adoption angle that brings so much depth to this contemporary romance. And angst. Lots of tears too. Honestly, it felt like someone stuck a knife in my gut and twisted it slowly at one point. So, yes, I lived through every millisecond of this emotional roller coaster ride. Lots of angst but so much heart and hope too. And humour!

(Funny side note: I've been listening to books on my social distancing walks and I totally broke into heaving sobs when Deese unexpectedly skewered my heart. Ha -- there I was blocks away from home with my eyes streaming and my nose running as I choked out sobs that sounded like coughing. I looked like a walking advertisement for what to avoid in this COVID-19 world.)

So, reader beware. Read this one in the privacy of your own home -- with lots of tissues handy and some comfort chocolate and maybe a favourite teddy bear for extra solace.

I am a huge fan of Contemporary romances. This book was fantastic, I loved the whole story line being a women who would give anything to be able to adopt a child and give it all the love I have to give. I really connected with Lauren. I did have a point in the book where I was not sure I was going to like what was happening and how things were playing out but in the end I loved it. it worked out perfectly.
I gave this book 5 stars 2 times. I HIGHLY recommend this book.

*sobs* My heart is a mess, and I have been reduced to a blubbering ball of feelings. (Even as a reread!) How have I not read this book before now??

This is one of the most beautifully heartfelt, devastating, and yet hopeful books I’ve ever read. All centred around the core theme of waiting on God’s perfect timing in the midst of messiness, heartbreak, and disappointment.

I loved Lauren with her hopes, dreams, determination, and tender heart; Joshua with his quirky nerdiness while being a true gentleman in respecting Lauren’s boundaries; adorable Jenna & Brian; sweet Gail; and the supportive Avery clan.

Also Lauren and Joshua’s texting convos were the best and utterly hilarious!

This story will having you smiling and laughing while bringing tears to your eyes; worth every minute!

Y’all. I don’t know why I waited so long to pick up this book!
THE STORY INSIDE?!? Wow. Just…wow! I was torn between inhaling it in one sitting, and taking my time to soak in every bit of goodness!

That was one of the most heartfelt, wonderful books I’ve read in awhile! I could feel EVERY emotion radiating off the page. The good, the bad, the ugly! And I could relate to it in small ways. Obviously not the in the “adoption” way, but in the anxiety of the future & stressing when God’s timing doesn’t look like mine. The struggle and the fear — but the PEACE! The unmeasurable peace when you finally let go & let God. FELT IT ALL!

But that wasn’t the only beautiful thing in this story. The romance!! I was a little worried, I’m not gonna lie, when I was deciding to pick the book up. I’m a romance girl at heart and I don’t do well when there’s isn’t some kind of wooing going on. 😜
BUT Y’ALL!! Joshua AVERY! Obsessed & obsessed! Where do I find one of those? Do I order it on Amazon??
The communication! The chemistry! The friendship! The TRUE love! The waiting! Just…*chefs kiss* FABULOUS!

This book was a beautifully crafted piece of art! And I am so beyond thankful that Nicole shared a piece of her heart with the world, because you can see & feel it within these pages! And I’m SO GLAD I picked it up! Definitely can’t wait to read another book by Nicole!!

Once again, I have discovered how much I enjoy contemporary romance. (And yes, I kind of cringe saying that.) But I think I have a wrong idea of what contemporary romance is, because this book totally blew my assumptions out of the water!

Characters: Lauren was such a realistic, believable character throughout the entire book. She was a teacher (already so much good stuff going on there!), and watching her work through her deepest longings was really beautiful. She seemed like a real person - she failed, she cried, she laughed and rejoiced. And of course, Joshua Avery, the love interest. Okay, can I just say this guy was the perfect boyfriend for her? He was such a nerd, but he was such a great guy. He didn't let weird little things get in the way of their relationship (so many romance books have plots where one little unnecessary, improbable spat ruins everything), and he was so persistent yet not creepy with her. He didn't have a POV, which may have contributed to why he seemed so perfect. (And I love flawed characters, but he pulled off the being perfect quite well.) And of course, the other characters were so sweet, especially Gail.

Plot/Romance: The basic plot entailed Lauren's quest to adopt a child as a single woman. (I kind of struggled with this throughout the book, because I believe the Lord created families to have a mother and a father. Obviously, this doesn't always happen in a perfect world, and God gives grace to those parents who end up having to raise their kids alone. However, Lauren didn't have to raise a child on her own. She hadn't been widowed or divorced or put through some other really difficult situation. She was going out of her way to adopt a kid to raise on her own. To me, this just seemed a little strange, and not the best situation for a child. But there are so many orphans out there who need loving, supportive homes, and a single parent is far better than the place they're currently at. So ... all of that to say, I was conflicted on this throughout the story.) Anyway. That sounds like a super simple plot, but it didn't drag. There was drama with Lauren's adopting plans, family problems, character development, and of course, the romance. Thankfully, this romance was quite clean. Just a couple kisses here or there, though I will mention for some readers that Lauren and Joshua were alone at night and being pretty cozy. Nothing happened, though, so it didn't bother me overmuch.

Writing Style: Nicole Deese's writing styles works perfectly in this genre. I love how real her books read. It feels like it could be someone's life! All of the little details she adds in through every scene just make you feel like you're right there. There was one instance, though, of a cuss word that was cut off halfway. I was pretty disappointed to see that, because even though the word was cut off, it was clear what the character was saying. Definitely unnecessary.

Moral/Theme: The concept of family was a pretty big part of this book, obviously, with Lauren's adoption aspirations as well as drama with her family. I really loved watching Lauren's commitment to her adopted daughter even if it meant Lauren had to suffer through difficulties herself. It was such a beautiful picture of sacrificial love. However, although there was prayer and mentions of going to church, there wasn't a clear explanation of the Gospel, and I felt like the author teetered a bit on the Catholic side of things. (Mainly a mention of Mary having a "divine gaze" or something along those lines.) In general, this book would have been better if it would've had more Jesus. But alas, there were still lovely moments, and I loved Gail's words about waiting and God having a plan even when we can't see what's going on.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book. If you're looking for a contemporary romance with real-life struggles, you've found your next read. And in the meantime, I'll be on the lookout for this author's next book!

This one was simply a scrumptious feast of literary pleasure. A gentle romance is central to the story but not the main issue: the main issue is adoption. And poor Lauren is stuck where she has to pick between romance and motherhood for her future!! Say what? Mean author, right? Well, it sure makes a compelling story as Lauren wrestles for her dreams even while she faces having to pick between the two things she wants most: though motherhood is drawing at her heart, attraction to her new co-worker is making her heart dance a bit too high.

Joshua was easy to like and I really enjoyed how their interactions went. We got lots of page time with them together, and I especially loved the texting scenes and the tree lighting scene best.

My favorite thing was how adult they are. They actually talk through things when they have issues! And they don't forget they have issues because they have attraction! This is exactly what I love reading in a good romance: believable adult interaction. Spot on.

But oh, Lauren's journey to motherhood...ouch, ouch, ouch...you're sure to cry over and over again...make sure you start with the multi-pack of Kleenex or a roll of paper towels!!

Such a heartwarming novel.

Single and in her thirties, Lauren has one goal and that is international adoption.

Enter life curve Joshua. Phenomenal main male character.

This was an emotional novel. It brought me many smiles, but also made my heart ache at times. I adore a dash of comedy in novels and Before I Called You Mine delivers spectacularly on that front. There are so many wonderful one liners that had me laughing. The opening of the chapter one quickly brought a smile to my face and it remained there for many pages. Depth is also a large part of this novel and I love the author's note at the end that explains while this novel is about Lauren's difficult choices, the wisdom in the pages could apply to any of life's troubles. Community is another theme and it was delightful to read about the unofficial support group Lauren had on her side.

Beautiful novel. My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.

Before I Called You Mine is my first Nicole Deese book--but it won't be my last. I so enjoyed this book.

Lauren Bailey is a first-grade teacher in Idaho. She is in her early 30s and has given up on men and decided to adopt a child from China because she wants to be a mom. Then Joshua Avery shows up at her school as a substitute teacher and Lauren finds him fascinating, unlike so many men in her past. How will she make a difficult decision to choose between the two?

Oh my goodness! All the feels for this book! I so loved Joshua Avery. I love Lauren too but for different reasons. :) Deese's writing of this story left me laughing out loud in a few places as I delighted in some of Joshua's antics. I also teared up as the characters made some difficult decisions. One of the other aspects I especially liked about this book is that it felt so realistic throughout much of the book. Lauren's family wasn't very nice and I didn't care for those characters to start with but they grew on me a little more as the book went on. Unfortunately, I think many people can relate to some of the dysfunction. I think Deese also showed some of the challenges with adopting in a realistic light from what I have known through those who have adopted internationally. I liked the spiritual element that continued through the book as the character's each had to wrestle with what God was teaching them. I think it portrayed the Christian life fairly accurately for many people. Before I Called You Mine moved along fairly fast for me and was a good read all the way through. I could see this book being made in to a movie.

This book was soooo good. Seriously, you do not want to miss out on this read. It needs to be on the top of your TBR pile. In fact, you can go ahead and put that book you reading now down and pick this one up. It’s that good.

I fully expect this book to hit all the awards as a finalist because the emotion in this story, the impact it has on your heart and your walk with God cannot be denied. This book had me from page one and didn’t let go. I’m talking major book hangover. There were so many scenes in here that either made me laugh, cry, or sigh.

Joshua Avery may be my favorite hero yet, which says a lot because I’ve been keeping my hero list pretty short. But this guy is so genuine and so funny that he convinced me he was a good guy before the heroine agreed with my assessment.

All in all, this book gets all the stars and deserves a place on every bookshelf known to man.

My word, this book was amazing. I honestly loved every part of this book, well minus one but I’ll get to that later. I absolutely loved the storyline a lot. As someone who is the older sister of two adoptive brothers, who are actually from China, I loved this storyline so much!! I felt like Ms. Deese did a phenomenal job at implicating both the beauty and struggle that goes into adopting international, but also domestic (one’s not harder than the other). I really appreciated the realistic take on that.

The characters were also amazing. I especially loved Joshua, honestly who couldn’t love Joshua? He was the nerd that made everyone laugh because of his crazy antics, but he still was so down to earth and loving. He cares for Lauren was so sweet and he just really made this story come together. Honestly, I do not think any other personality could have fit Joshua or this book better. Lauren was also an amazing character, but she annoyed me a few times too. I feel like she was in step with God’s Will until she wasn’t. I was really excited and thought that she was finally seeing the Will of God fully when she realized something while with Joshua’s parents but then she did a huge 180 and was back to square one. However, that being said I ALSO understand the first year of adoption and how difficult it is so I know exactly where she was coming from.

There were Christian themes woven throughout this whole book that I really liked and I felt like it was not preachy at all rather it was in the right places at the right times. Overall, I highly enjoyed this book and would recommend it to all. The romance was not over the top, but rather was a slow burn that made you want to force the two characters together. This book is definitely a sweet rainy day read that would have you laughing, tearing up, and just super content with it all. I cannot wait to see what Ms. Deese has in store for us next!

Before I Called You Mine is a wonderful story. I laughed, cried, and pondered the heroine's dilemma the whole time I was reading. I was wondering what I would do if I was in the same situation. Lauren is a precious heroine. I loved her and wanted to be her bestie. The hero, Joshua is amazing. I was thinking that if he could jump off the pages and be a real person, he would be the guy I'd want to marry my granddaughter. Sigh, he was that sweet and considerate, and loving. Perfect hero. This is a wonderfully inspiring book. I highly recommend.

This was a great choice for me to read on Mother's Day last weekend. Joshua and Lauren are extremely likeable characters, and Lauren is realistically flawed in ways that make it easy to relate to her. Joshua is just plain charming. I appreciated the inside look into how the international adoption process works, with all its uncertainties, suspense, sorrows and joys. Faith is front and center in this novel, so if you love a book in which the characters take Jesus seriously, and are actively looking for His guidance, this is for you. I enjoyed it.

If you know me, you know foster and adoption are near and dear to my heart. Speaking of my heart it’s been shattered in our journey. Because of that I tend to be skeptical of these storylines because they aren’t believable or are too sugar coated.

This book was a lovely mix of struggle and triumph. It was romantic, funny and thought provoking. I thoroughly enjoyed it and closed the cover with a smile.

This was my first Nicole Deese novel, but I hope it won’t be my last. What a heartwarming story. I loved the adoption journey, hard as it was at times. I was not sure at first how I felt about the idea of intentionally adopting as a single parent, since I believe God intended kids to need fathers too, but God’s best isn’t always what happens in this broken world, and this book made me think of what I’ve read about single Christian women in the early church taking in children the Roman culture had abandoned. I love fiction that makes me think, and this book definitely did that—what would I have done in this situation?

The story’s premise really drew me in because it’s not a typical romance setup. And this was not a typical romance. It had its mushy moments here and there, of course, but it was filled with real, deep, sacrificial love—the kind of love that says, I’ll wait until you’re ready; I’ll step away if that’s what’s best for you. That kind of love is beautiful, and it was made even more so by the fact that these characters didn’t just have a vague belief in God; they had a living, growing faith that clearly started with receiving Christ as Savior and trying to follow his leading. I loved that that came up so early in the relationship, and I loved that Lauren and Joshua were mature enough to discuss the difficulties that came up rather than falling prey to constant misunderstandings or miscommunication.

Nicole Deese’s writing style was perfect for this book, and I eagerly look forward to reading another of her novels. The only place where I felt pulled out of the story came in the second half, when the story started spanning more time between chapters and Joshua kind of fell off the radar. I just loved seeing him and Lauren together. They were not perfect by any means, but they were perfect for each other. Joshua was such a caring, gentlemanly hero without seeming unrealistic, and I could relate to Lauren’s desires to do the right thing but confusion over what that was. There was so much emphasis in this book on God’s leading; I would have liked to see more scripture brought up in the characters’ lives, since that is our primary source of truth and it’s hard to discern God’s leading without it. At the same time, I appreciated seeing Lauren learn to listen to truth even when it came from people who didn’t agree with her. And her longing for her adopted child gave me a glimpse, however small, into God’s heart of love toward us—a beautiful theme to contemplate around Valentine’s Day.

Altogether, I really loved this story and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a contemporary friendship romance that will teach you a lot about the road to adoption and introduce you to characters who feel like friends.

This novel is the story of a single woman's journey toward adoption, the unexpected appearance of a potential husband in her well-orchestrated plans and the emotional turmoil that ensues.
I am not sure how to effectively articulate my feelings for this book. I loved every minute of it, cried more often than I ever have while reading a romance and reaching the end was a bittersweet moment because I just didn't want it to be over.
Reading Nicole's writing is a remarkable experience. I don't have any personal experience with international adoption, and yet I felt like the character's emotions and experiences were my emotions and experiences. From the beginning of the book, the author pulls us in with her incredible ability to tell a compelling story. Her writing is gorgeous and her character development is rich and complex. It's challenging to craft a romance novel from only the heroine's point of view and yet reading this book from just Lauren's point of view is what makes it so amazing.
Lauren is far from perfect and her flaws, doubts and fears form the foundation for a great character journey. The hero is funny and charming and a delight from the minute he walks onto the page.
For those of us who've eagerly anticipated Nicole's next book, I can confidently say Before I Called You Mine is worth the wait. I'd give ten stars if I could.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for the complimentary ARC. All opinions stated here are my own.

A really sweet and tender romance centered around a woman who so desperately wants to be a mom and feels God leading her to adopt as a single parent. Things don't go according to plan, but honestly I loved how it ended. This story really shows that God is in control, He knows our greatest desires and sometimes we have to wait for His plans to happen.

I especially loved the male lead in the story, he was so funny and sweet and just a perfect guy-next-door type.

"Mary. Her expression, etched in eternal awe, beckoned to me, as if daring me to consider the questions I’d never been brave enough to ponder in years before. But as I held her divine gaze, I wondered at the God who’d destined this young woman for such a high calling. How had her faith been strong enough to handle such a daunting task? How had she been ready for such an unconventional journey to motherhood? For all the heartache and struggle ahead of her?"

This is the writing of an author who knows her God, whose relationship with the Lord was effortlessly woven into this absolutely wonderful book, and I am better for having read it.

First grade teacher Lauren Bailey, with the encouragement of the couple who lead her to the Lord, had decided to adopt an orphan from China. She'd been preparing months for that blessed event. The decision to adopt as a single woman meant she would not be married at the time of the adoption, so she chose to not bring a man into her life.

But was God showing her another life choice when the charismatic, huge hearted substitute teacher turns her life around?

This sounds like it could go either way. The choices, to be a mommy or to have the love the greatest man, are both dreams come true. But only one is possible.

This also sounds like it could be a hard book to read. It wasn’t. The lighthearted dialog and upbeat relationships were sheer pleasure to read within a very serious storyline.

Lauren and Joshua are two of the best characters I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know. Both are intelligent, loving, sensitive and fun people. Add a best friend (another teacher who is incredibly supportive and a blast) and there is such a terrific dynamic in this story you'll love to sink in to and love as much as I did.

Perfection!

Wow . . . I don't know what I was expecting out of this novel, but it far exceeded any expectations I may have had. Very quickly I was drawn into the story, and despite being a somewhat slow-paced book with nothing much major happening plot-wise . . . I still didn't want to put it down! I can't help but attribute that to Deese's engaging writing style and gripping characters. I'm not a huge fan of first person POV, but it did work well for this story. There was humor mixed in with the more serious themes and kept the story moving.

Lauren is an incredibly realistic and relatable character. She's flawed and struggles just as much as the rest of us. I enjoyed getting to know her and follow the ups and downs of her story. Joshua is a very sweet character as well and he was a great counterpart to Lauren. I loved how he pursued her but was still so very respectful and supported her in her dreams. Can I get a Joshua pretty please???

The theme of adoption was unique and very moving. Adoption is something that is very close to my heart, so it was fascinating to learn more about it. I loved that Deese showed the realisticality of adoption in Lauren's storyline. It isn't easy or painless. But it is worth it.

Overall, this was simply a beautiful novel and fully deserving of all 5 stars! I highly recommend this is you love moving contemporary fiction or if adoption is a subject you're interested in! Well done, Ms. Deese!

My 3rd time reading this book. I don't know why I have had a hard time reading this book. The story is a wonderful one. Lauren wants to adopt a child from overseas. With her decision she will be doing so as a single mother. Then comes Joshua , the substitute teacher to next to her class. Sparks fly and Joshua is an amazing man who is Christ filled and full of love and grace. When Lauren first adoption goes through she doesn't know if she can go through it again. So the relationship between the 2 start to develop. Then the unthinkable happens. She gets her daughter, so what will happen to Joshua? I finally fell in love with this book and it only took 3 times to read it! I really understand Lauren, her family are all non believers like mine are and her difficulties she faces with them. I know her feelings. You want both love for her and her desire for her child. It is a wonderful story for all those who are or who have face overseas adoption. I give all those who want to do this selfless act credit. The wait alone would be a killer. I highly recommend this book especially for all those who have or know those who have wanted to do overseas adoption. Wonderful book and wonderful story!!!!

This was a beautiful, tender, and heartwarming story. This story follows Lauren Bailey, a first-grade teacher and single woman, on a journey to adopt internationally. It was a solid Christian story full of romance, raw emotion, struggles, friendship, and funny moments in between.

I don’t read Christian romances as often, but I will if it’s written by Nicole Deese. I loved both Lauren and Josh and the blossoming relationship between the two. Nicole writes such relatable and realistic characters and situations. She doesn’t shy away from displaying their flaws, struggles, or mistakes while showcasing their growth and faith, centering the focus on God. There were great messages in this one, like trusting God and his timing, even when it’s difficult or we don’t understand.

I loved that this story focused on adoption, which is near and dear to my heart, with my family taking care of foster kids growing up and my dream to adopt one day. It’s even more special knowing that it parallels Nicole’s personal story with her international adoption💕

I don’t read contemporary stories very often because I prefer historical, but I felt like I needed a genre change to help me get out of slump. And oh my word this book did just that!

I will admit I was very skeptical going into this because I did not like Nicole Deeses novella in The Kissing Tree novella collection. This exceeded my expectations.

I loved this book. The characters felt so real and it was like watching a movie. I mean, most books I read are like watching a movie, but this one was different. But I don’t know how to describe it!

I really, really wish it would have switched from Lauren’s POV and Joshuas. With the personality he had, it would have been so much fun to be inside his head!

I really liked this book though. Which I feel like I’ve said a thousand times now….I’m not good at writing reviews. I definitely can’t wait to read Nicole’s other book and anything else she has that comes out!
