A solid cozy mystery about a bakery owner. The story has a good mystery and is well-written. I didn't connect with the main character Sophia, the introduction didn't provide enough context for the start of the story and some of the characters are stereotypical. But once I got into the story it proceeded with a good mystery and was a quick, easy read.

Sophia runs a bakery which is slightly magic. She is a witch--unfortunately according to her, a less than competent one. The bakery has gotten a large order from a new winery in the area, but when she and her friend Lemon deliver the cupcakes, they encounter obnoxious people, a theft, and a murder. Some people are blaming Sophia, which is upsetting, but happily her notoriety has increased business at the bakery. A Kindle freebie.

Baked goods, witchy things, and a murder! Oh my!

I came across this book through another book blogger’s site and I just had to check it out. I do love cosy mysteries especially when infused with baking and witchcraft! And while the book wasn’t always my cup of tea… I did enjoy myself.

I wrote a good/not so good review as that just worked better for this book~

GOOD:
😍 I love the cover! It is so much fun and I love the style of the illustrations.
😍 I love that there is baking in it. I love baking cookies and other yummy food, so I always love reading about others baking as well. Reading about the yummy foods they make. Plus, I would definitely love having a bakery (along with a bookstore haha) and have every day be a baking day filled with, hopefully, happy customers!
😍 Loved the murder mystery. At times it seemed to go a bit in the background, but it was always there in a way and it was just fabulous. It just gave the book something extra and I was definitely curious on who the murderer could be and who robbed Amy’s safe. As the story continued I had a list of people who could have done it (even including Amy because of her extreme temper and attitude).
😍 The actual Whodunnit was just WHAT???? I hadn’t expected them! Haha. But what we learn at the end? I guess it makes sense they are the culprit of everything. But it was definitely not clear to me throughout the book. XD
😍 Loved that there is magic! Our MC is a witch and she always add something extra to the mix. From honesty to happy feelings. It was just that extra spark and I would love to try out one of her foods, especially ones giving me happiness because with COVID still around… I need something extra. I also loved seeing Sophia use her magic in other places. I would definitely like to know more about witches in this universe and if there are also other witchcrafts around, because Sophia is a witch that does things in the kitchen.
😍 The dogs. Sophia has two big dogs, Daisy and Minnie, and I just LOVED them. They were cute and fluffy and I just wish I could step in the book and give these two naughty (because really they get up to some things) a big big hug.
😍 This is just a tiny thing, but I appreciate it. Sophia has asthma. For most of the book we don’t see much of it, but there are bits here and there especially at the end. Because I got asthma and often in books with MCs and asthma it is just always there. They always struggle and always have a hard time. That was definitely me when I was a kid/teen, but now I am 18+ my asthma is doing better, well for most. I always have an inhaler with me, because it isn’t always going well (especially not with the masks). I am happy to see an MC who is like me in that regard. I could just feel those moments at the end when Sophia was out of breath, how her asthma kicked in. It was so well-written.
😍 The ending was just perfection. It made me happy. Plus, while I wasn’t a fan of the characters for most of the book… I warmed up to them all very fast. Even Amy. XD
😍 SHIFTERS???? SHIFTERS??????? I NEED DETAILS!!!!!!! MORE!!!
😍 There is even a dash of romance and while I wasn’t sure how to feel about the love interest (and was worried about the curse) I was definitely hoping for them to get together. I just loved (and laughed) at how Sophia (and also other girls) described the love interest, haha.
😍 I need more Doris, that woman is a hoot!

NOT SO GOOD:
🙄 It definitely didn’t always feel like a first book in a series. There were at points that I checked on ϻӮ to really make sure that I hadn’t missed another book. Relationships between characters felt like you had to know the details to get it. There is a rivalry that I just didn’t get and felt totally random.
🙄 The characters. Haha. I just didn’t like all the characters, and some I liked at times but other times I just wanted to yeet away. Amy and Leslie and Bill were the worst. Especially Amy, I do hope that she really apologised because HOLY HELL girl, that anger is not healthy. Then there is Makalya who seems really incompetent and I just found it weird how she kept going into the kitchen despite being told no many times. Lemon was so-so. I really loved how she supported Sophia, but there were parts that had me shaking my head.
🙄 The detective. Yes, he was a fun love interest… but lord how can a guy like him be such an idiot? He definitely showed more promise at the end, but in the beginning when everything went wrong… holy crap.
🙄 Tired of curvy girls getting called chubs or people having opinions about it. I just wanted to punch that guy for saying that.
🙄 Again, the rivalry?? I just didn’t get it? At times it popped up and I was just shaking my head, didn’t understand why it was necessary.

All in all, as you can see, a lot of positivity, but some of the negatives took away a bit more joy. Like that it felt more like a second book at times, which confused me and pulled me from the story. But I am very happy I read the book and definitely want to read more. Curious about the shifter stuff.

Short and kinda sweet

I found the main character a little frustrating at the beginning. Then half way through, things that should have been mentioned at the start were introduced. Then a handful of characters did complete 180’s

Though a tad overwhelming, I would still like to see where the story goes

Cupcakes and Crime by April Browne

I wrote this review based on an advance reading copy that the author sent me.

When the local baker (and kitchen witch) Sophia Bell and her employee/quirky sidekick Lemon, are hired for the opening of Magnolia Winery , things don’t go quite as planned. As a robbery is discovered and Ken Wales, quarterback, is found dead, Sophia is accused and quickly becomes the police’s top suspect. Can the crime and order be restored to her beloved Mama Ginger’s bakery and town?

This is what I believe to be a strong and delightful cozy mystery. I found Sophia to be enjoyable and true to cozy fashion she is kind and has a great knack for getting involved in situations beyond her control. Cupcakes and Crime is a summer cozy mystery that will tickle your senses, engage your sleuthing mind, and end on a tidy note of who done it.

I was surprised by who was killed, I prefer to go in blind on books and I definitely thought I would know who the victim would be. That was not the case and I was pleasantly surprised. It is nice that a cozy mystery author can surprise the reader and made me keep guessing.
Mama Ginger’s Bakery is the place to be, even if I did have to experience it through the pages of a book. I really loved that it felt like I was there visiting and working with Sophia in the bakery. I would love to spend more time there, relax in the big, comfy chairs and savour one of the cupcakes for myself!

My overall thoughts on this book: Readers are in for a summer treat filled with delights and an interesting twist that leads us through this mystery. Every chapter is made to keep you guessing, each new character a possible suspect in your mind, and yet we also learn more about the community, friendship and facts of Sophia’s past.

She's worked hard to build up her inherited bakery business, but finding a dead body at her first catering gig could derail Sophia Bell's plans.

The cast of Cupcakes and Crime is interesting and varied. Each has his or her own voice. The main character is a witch whose powers are still budding and she's gradually finding her way in the world.

My main problem with the story was all the "wisps". Some many elements were left either unformed or were introduced and then abandoned. Rather than focus on Sophia's newest emerging traits, I would have like to see more development of the relationship between the baker and her store staff. Or a more in-depth discussion of the background between the major players. Or a spotlight on the detective. There were just too many things that were incomplete.

I liked Cupcakes and Crime. I did. I just wish there had been another edit or two to the plot.

This was a fun start to a new to me series with another witch who wasn't quite in control of her powers. The running joke with the detective was that he was super handsome but didn't really have a clue what he was doing. Or that was the way it seemed to Sophia. Maybe he just came off as disorganized to confuse the suspects, lol.

The whodunit was a surprise, and the showdown was a real nail biter as to what was going to happen next. Something strange happened to Sophia while she was battling the perp, then the sheriff made a comment about it later while showing a magical-ish side to himself. I'm definitely interested in the next book to see what's going on and if the two of them use these abilities to help solve another murder. I didn't wanna spoil it and say what the magical things was exactly. You can read it and find out too!

Cupcakes and Crime is the first novel in the Gold Valley Mysteries. This is the first novel I have read by this author. I found her to be a talented and gifter author. A grand opening turns deadly at a winery for the general manger and the prime suspect is the hired caterer who is not a very skilled witch. She will have to use her less than accurate skills to keep her out of jail for a murder she did not commit. April Browne is a fast-paced and funny cozy mystery, packed with quirky characters, pets, and murder. Buy the book and start this hilarious caper today! I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book with no monetary compensation

I received a gifted copy of this book from the author in return for my honest review.

This series follows Sophia Bell who is a baker and a witch. She says she is not very good at being a witch, so the only time she uses her magic is when she is baking.

With her parents both dead, she is left to work out her magic on her own. She takes on Mama Ginger’s bakery and through her work seems to get her involved in some mysteries to solve.

Sophia has been hired to provide cupcakes for the opening of Magnolia Winery’s. All is going well apart from some snide comments from some of the staff.

Suddenly there is an announcement of a theft and then Sophia discovers a dead body in the basement.

Detective Schmidt is brought in to investigate the murder. Does he suspect Sophia, or is there another reason for him being keen to speak to her?

Sophia finds herself involved in the case and unravelling the secrets to uncover the murderer.

I really enjoyed reading this book, it is the first cozy mystery I have read, and I loved it.

Sophia is a character that you warm to instantly and her baking sounds delicious.

The mix of magic with the mystery works well and makes it different to what I have read before. It keeps you wondering who the killer could be throughout.

Overall, a brilliant cozy mystery with a touch of magic and baking.

Things don’t run smoothly for Sophia Bell and her bakery when Mama Ginger’s Bakery is hired for the grand opening of Magnolia Winery. The inept kitchen witch winds up as suspect numero uno in a murder investigation. There’s a murderer on the loose in town and Sophia has to launch an investigation and reveal the secrets before they catch up and threaten her because as she and Lemon delivered their cupcakes they met with suspicion and hostility. Does she have the ability to solve this mystery and start off a new leaf with her potential customers.. immersive , fun and written well with great characters .

Well enough done. Plot held together; whodunnit a satisfying twist. The problem is that the whole baking witch, dreadful love life, with pets is sort of overdone. On the upside, the MC did NOT feel a particular need to stick her nose into the police investigation; that is the aspect of cozy mysteries that is most irritating for me. So, that's a plus point for the author. On the downside, she did behave rather stupidly at a couple of points, so .... that's typical plot driver for a cozy. I believe that if there are any more books in this series, I would be inclined to give them a try.

What a joy! This was my first adventure with the author, and it was so much fun!
Well written, and plotted, with enough red herrings I had no clue who the baddie was!
The characters are very real, flaws and all, the tiny teeny dip into more magic than Sophia's kitchen magic is intriguing.
Also I want to hug Daisy and Minnie sooo badly, they're good girls.
April Browne, thank you for keeping me awake with the little book of fabulousness! Book 2 is downloaded and ready to go!

Entertaining with a punchy end

Cupcakes and crime brings you into a familiar world (for those of us in California wine country) with a magical flair.
The mystery is engaging, the setting is fun and the ending is solid.
I’d like to see more from this series. All of the little hints that there’s more to the world than a mediocre witch making confections do their job in leaving the reader curious.

Also, someone pour me some wine ;-)

A baker who is also slightly a witch! Interesting. A big order for cupcakes to be eaten at the opening of a new winery has a little bit of honesty mixed in them. This leads to some interesting comments, one of which leads to a theft & another to a murder. There’s a nice looking detective on the case. Being accused by the paper of being a murderer leads to Sophie becoming a celebrity & people crowd into the bakery to have a selfie taken with her! Good for business!

New series

This was a good start to a new paranormal mystery series. The characters have been introduced and have room to grow. The conversations flow naturally and the plot and subplots moved at a good pace. Was a little confusing but following stories should better explain some of the actions. Can't wait for the next installment.

Great story

I think the book was really good! I wasn't really fond of Sophie in the beginning of the book because she seemed a little wishy washy. Her character got stronger throughout the story. The shifter was an unexpected plot twist that was awesome. I will be reading the rest of the series as soon as I can.

A good book, with a good storyline.

I felt the inclusion of the "therian" aspect at the end of the story was hard to follow. I know it was hinted at - flashes of tails throughout - but no-one addressed it until the very end!

A little disappointing as it could have added another paranormal aspect throughout. The Witch element was addressed, so why not the animal aspect too?

The start to a new cozy murder series that has all the right elements and leaves enough things open to explore in future books. I am looking forward to more adventures with Sophia and some of the other characters like Makayla. I only meant to start this book last night but ended up not putting it down until I finished it!

So simple that it was slightly boring. What witchy influence? Who were these people, and why are we invested in it? The who or who done it was so far afield that it didn't really add up. Ken was killed with a corkscrew at the opening of a winery in town. And the baker, who brought the best cupcakes was accused. And all the characters seemed the same to me.

Quick read

This book was a quick read. The writing could be a bit better but overall it's good. The whole family curse to never have a man stay similar to another author so I was thinking I would be one and done with this series but the twist at the end has me rethinking that.

I thought that this (novella?) was a fairly ordinary read. This story did not really seem to be about magic as such (despite the protagonist being a "sort of" witch), and the murder mystery was not investigated.
