WWII airman Luke Hampstead found comfort in letters from the sister of a lost compatriot. When he visits Texas to thank her, he discovers her constructing a project with surprising ties to his letters. . . and that she herself is even more surprising. While a promising opportunity awaits him elsewhere, will what they've shared be enough to give their future flight?

From Roots to Sky by Amanda Dykes 1945 Amanda Dykes lovely poetic style tells a story of an airman home from the war to find the sister of a buddy he lost in France. Luke and Hannah have dreams for the future: “some dreams fade away when you grow up, an I s’pose that’s all well and good. We trade them for other dreams.” The old oak tree plays a part in yet another romance. This one had a homey, nostalgic feel to it.
The Kissing Tree is a collection of four novellas written by four different authors.
The third novella (From Roots to Sky by Amanda Dykes) was a slower story for me at first and it wasn't until close to the end that I started to love the story. It got so intense that I could hardly read fast enough. I thought the romance was really sweet.

I love anything Amanda writes, and this novella was no exception!!
From the very first scene with Hannah, I knew I would like this woman. Plus the way she gave herself lectures and practiced her speeches on the farm animals was hilarious and had me snickering. Luke is an absolute sweetheart, and he and Hannah are a lovely couple! Then there’s Jerry the sage mentor who gave great (and comical) advice and shook Luke up when necessary. *smirks*
And of course, I loved the Oz references!
A tale full of beauty, hope, light, love, and the reminder that sometimes our dreams have a way of changing and bringing about something far better than we could have imagined! 💛
I never give novellas 5 stars because they always feel a bit rushed. Man, Amanda Dykes has a way with words and phrasing and just 🤌. I ate this one up!
I feel like I visited and had a stay at a bed and breakfast inn in a small town in Texas this weekend. I met characters and traveled on their journey. I saw them on their daily walks, build a cottage, and fall in love. What a great setting and wonderful characters!
I've never read anything by Amanda Dykes though I see her name often. This novella from The Kissing Tree collection was a beautiful, sweet tale of two people who needed a friend and a purpose. The WWII setup wasn't cliche and the characters were well developed even in the short length. A great addition to my favorite novella collection.
I enjoyed this novella! Though it wasn’t as gripping as the other stories in the collection, the story is very powerful and the characters are well developed for a novella. The ending is sweet and very satisfying. 4/5 stars
"Lady Tornado" is an apt name for beautiful Hannah! Nothing at all like he envisioned, but exactly everything he needed! I love the quirky cottage and all it meant too! A delightful tale of discovering healing and home in the chaos of WWII.
I love reading novellas, especially if I need to get away but don't have all day to devote to my reading. This sweet, touching story was just the thing I wanted. The characters are lovable. The setting was fun and The Kissing Tree is part of the landscape. A fun delightful short novella.
Cute. A bit too much of a QuIrKy heroine and a few unanswered questions (what was Hannah going to do in New York? Was Gran able to stay on her own in Oak Springs? What happened to Hannah and Luke's parents?), but it was entertaining.
