The author of Metropolitan Life and Social Studies offers her first children's book--the humorous adventures of two seven-year-old children and two Panda bears named Pandemonium and Don't Panda to Public Taste.
Frances Ann "Fran" Lebowitz is an American author and public speaker. Lebowitz is known for her sardonic social commentary on American life as filtered through her New York City sensibilities. Some reviewers have called her a modern-day Dorothy Parker.
I would like to say that I had this book read to me from preschool to 1st grade, and it was quite possibly my favorite book. the complex language and odd subtopics filled me with wonder (reading a dictionary, common sense) and the surreal world gave me plenty to dream about throughout all my childhood. While there was quite a long time before the pandas became part of the story, that was not important to me. Even Mr. Chas and Lisa Sue's dynamics were interesting alone. I feel like many adults don't think children react well to complexity, but I feel like, at least for me, the complex things I learned about as a child filled me with wonder, and made me feel smart when I learned how they worked. I am disappointed this book has so little recognition
I wanted to like this more than I did. The premise of the story was cute, the illustrations by Michael Graves were delightful & the characters had more personality than many children's stories offer, but somehow it just missed for me. Pandemonium seemed like an amusing name for a panda but Don't Panda to Public Taste as the name for the other just seemed like Lebowitz was trying too hard & that was the tone for much of the book - clever ideas pushed just a little too hard
"You don't have to make a new plan until you're sure that the old one won't work."
Тому ця книжка, про дітей, які випадково надибують панд у Нью-Йоркській квартирі сповнена всяких іронічних натяків, гри слів (панд звати Pandemonium і Do not panda to public taste) і життєвих порад, типу sometimes acting happier than you feel can make you feel happier than you are. Також чудові чорно-білі старосвітські ілюстрації.
God, Fran is such a genius writer! I love how she writes the dialogue and thought process out in a very child-like fashion that feels unpolished and improper. The message is cute and heartwarming, and the story itself is whimsical, fun, and perfect for a bedtime story! I'm very bummed this was the last project she's written, but I'm so happy she continued to work and find a stride in public speaking because she's a force of nature that should never be forgotten.
Two children living in a Manhattan co-op discover a hidden hallway where two pandas--named Pandemonium and Don't Panda to Public Taste--are hiding out until they can figure a way to move to Paris. While ostensibly a book for the first-grade crowd, this book would make a fun quick read for anybody.
