McCarthy and the others would not have chosen the path they chose unless it worked for them and achieved their selfish ends. It continues to work today because a lazy, ill-informed electorate is willing to abdicate its responsibility to the agenda of others. If Lester Hunt’s story had been told honestly in 1954, perhaps Americans would have been shocked into taking responsibility for the way in which their vote produced that outcome.
