“Abraham Lincoln quoted the Scriptures in an 1858 speech to the Illinois Republican Convention. He said, 鈥 A house divided against itself cannot stand.鈥 That, I fear, is where diversity leads. If by that term we refer to love and tolerance for peoples who are different from one another, it has great validity for us. But if by diversity we mean that all of us have been given reason to resent one another. Having no common values, heritage, commitment, or hope, then we are a nation in serious trouble.”

“Oh, no you don't. You're not heading down to that dock, young man," Babette declares as she clears my plate.
"But Babette, Dr. Felix said I only had to rest yesterday!"
"Yes he did, and I won't make you stay in bed today. But you're going to stay here while I go. I don't think your crutches are able to make it down the path. It's too rough. You'll end up tripping over something."
I scoff. She doesn't know that I'm the guy who not only made it down to the dock, but also did it in the dark WITHOUT falling flat on his back.
"But Babette鈥"
"No buts, Rylan. You're staying here and that's final"
"Fine," I grumble.”

“My little man,鈥 she said.
鈥淣辞.鈥
She stretched out her hand to him. 鈥淐ome.鈥
鈥淚 can鈥檛,鈥 he said.
鈥淪am, I鈥檓 your mother. I love you. Come with me.鈥
鈥淢辞尘鈥︹赌
鈥淛ust reach out to me. I鈥檓 safe. I can carry you away, out of this place.鈥
Sam shook his head slowly, slowly, like he was drowning in molasses. Something was happening to time. Astrid wasn鈥檛 breathing. Nothing was moving. The whole world was frozen.
鈥淚t will be like it was,鈥 his mother said.
鈥淚t was never鈥,鈥 he began. 鈥淵ou lied to me. You never told me鈥︹
鈥淚 never lied,鈥 she said, and frowned at him, disappointed.
鈥淵ou never told me I had a brother. You never told鈥斺
鈥淛ust come with me,鈥 she said, impatient now, jerking her hand a little like she would when he was a little kid and refused to take her hand to cross the street. 鈥淐ome with me now, Sam. You鈥檒l be safe and out of this place.鈥
He reacted instinctively, the little boy again, reacted to the 鈥渕ommy鈥 voice, the 鈥渙bey me鈥 voice. He reached for her, stretched his hand out to her.
And pulled it back.
鈥淚 can鈥檛,鈥 Sam whispered. 鈥淚 have someone I have to stay here for.鈥
Anger flashed in his mother鈥檚 eyes, a green light, surreal, before she blinked and it was gone.
And then, out of the bleached, unreal world, Caine stepped into the eerie light.
Sam鈥檚 mother smiled at Caine, and he stared at her wonderingly. 鈥淣urse Temple,鈥 Caine said.
鈥淢om,鈥 she corrected. 鈥淚t鈥檚 time for both my boys to join me, to come away with me. Out of this place.鈥
Caine seemed spellbound, unable to tear his gaze away from the gentle, smiling face, the piercing blue eyes.
鈥淲hy?鈥 Caine asked in a small child鈥檚 voice.
Their mother said nothing. Once again, for just a heartbeat, her blue eyes glowed a toxic green before returning to cool, icy blue.
鈥淲hy him and not me?鈥 Caine asked.
鈥淚t鈥檚 time to come with me now,鈥 their mother insisted. 鈥淲e鈥檒l be a family. Far from here.鈥
鈥淵ou first, Sam,鈥 Caine said. 鈥淕o with your mother.鈥
鈥淣o,鈥 Sam said.
Caine鈥檚 face darkened with rage. 鈥淕o, Sam. Go. Go. Go with her.鈥 He was shouting now. He seemed to want to grab Sam physically, push him toward the mother they had not quite shared, but his movements were odd, disjointed, a jerky stick figure in a dream.
Caine gave up trying. 鈥淛ack told you,鈥 he said dully.
鈥淣o one told me anything,鈥 Sam said. 鈥淚 have things I have to do here.鈥
Their mother extended her arms to them, angry, demanding to be heeded. 鈥淐ome to me. Come to me.鈥
Caine shook his head slowly. 鈥淣辞.鈥
鈥淏ut you鈥檙e the man of the house now, Sam,鈥 his mother wheedled. 鈥淢y little man. Mine.鈥
鈥淣o,鈥 Sam said. 鈥淚鈥檓 my own man.鈥
鈥淎nd I was never yours,鈥 Caine sneered. 鈥淭oo late now, Mother.鈥
The face of their mother wavered. The tender flesh seemed to break apart in jigsaw-puzzle pieces. The gently smiling, pleading mouth melted, collapsed inward. In its place a mouth ringed with needle-sharp teeth. Eyes filled with green fire.
鈥淚鈥檒l have you yet,鈥 the monster raged with sudden violence.
Caine stared in horror. 鈥淲hat are you?鈥
鈥淲hat am I?鈥 the monster mocked him savagely. 鈥淚鈥檓 your future. You鈥檒l come to me on your own in the dark place, Caine. You will come willingly to me.”

“For starters, that鈥檚 a rather simple principle of Time Travel right there 鈥 and according to the pioneers of time travel, it鈥檚 one of the foundation stones of the Theory behind it. It鈥檚 something of a paradox 鈥 a mind-boggling annotation in the ever-puzzling and ever growing Anals of History. (Some readers may still be thinking that should be 鈥楢nnals鈥 鈥 however, the author of this work cannot be blamed for what you may think.)”
