Darling Girls was a twisting story of three foster sisters and the foster mother who put them through so much psychological abuse. That was many years ago and the damaged sisters are all going about their lives, still as close as they were as children, but their lives as they know it explode when they get a call that the skeletal remains of a child are found beneath the foster house they spent in the care and under the watchful and narcissistic eye of Miss Fairchild.
The characters felt real and relatable, each of them dealing with childhood trauma in different ways, they are not perfect characters, they have flaws. It was so easy to hate other characters... Miss Fairchild. I really enjoyed this read and honestly was surprised at the twists this book took!...more

I found myself revolted at some of the eerily gross scenes in this book, but overall the storyline was just a little too weird for me and I wasn't the biggest fan of the writing style. I thought the idea was interesting, but the book itself didn't deliver for me. Honestly, if I wasn't reading this for book club, I would have dnf'ed it....more

Dead Girls Walking was a creepy, teen slasher with supernatural elements. I am a slasher girly through and through and this book definitely scratched that itch for me. It's cliche, like most slashers, that the horror summer camp for black, queer, teenage girls is held on the land owned by an incarcerated serial killer. It's canon that under these circumstances the worst is destined to go down.
Though this is a slasher and has typical slasher elements, the concept is fun and unique. I was not expecting where Sami Ellis eventually took us in the story. ...more

Well, because the author is a diagnosed and unashamed sociopath with a PHD and desire to help others like her know that just because they lack the ability to emote like others (or at all), they are not inherently bad or evil people. I truly enjoyed reading this memoir, it was eye-opening and educational, something I think everyone should read!...more

"He wants the bride, she wants the groom. But what if all they really want...is each other?"
Spicy and swoon-worthy, The Next Best Fling is a complicated and messy romance, in which two lonely hearts pining for people they shouldn't fall into a mutually beneficial no-strings-attached relationship in an attempt to get over the people they wish loved them back. This was such a fun and quick read that I refused to put down until I finished the last page. Our characters Marcela and Theo go through so much in the book dealing with toxic relationships, heartbreak, feeling inadequate, abandoned, and hopeless but on the flipside we see them overcoming all of those and learning that it is not okay to let others treat you badly because of their insecurities. I loved this book and I loved Theo, best book boyfriend ever!
Marcela, a beautiful, curvy, Latina woman is still in love with Ben, her best friend and previous short-term boyfriend who called off their relationship nearly a decade ago, but keeps her close as a friend. Marcela fantasizes about Ben coming back to her when and if his relationship with Alice falls apart, but that seems less likely now that Ben and Alice are engaged.
Theo, Ben's older brother is in love with Alice, his childhood crush and next-door neighbor, but Alice and Ben are now getting married and he has to do something to stop it. So Theo plans to come clean and try to break up the couple at their engagement party, but Marcela sweeps in and stops him from making a huge mistake, but now everyone things that he and Marcela are hooking up. The two decide to make the best of the situation and mutually agree to be each other's rebound to get over their broken hearts. ...more

The character development was phenomenal, I really deeply cared for a few of the characters by the fourth chapter! The action was incredible and the banter between characters was somehow even better.
I also can't not mention that Maas managed to rip out my heart and destroy it. My heart will NEVER be the same!...more

Lucy Gilmore does such a great job writing an old curmudgeon of a man that you can't help but love, flaws and all! Jasper was such a character, he had the best banter and his heart of gold still seemed to shine through his hard exterior, no matter how hard he tried to hide the shine.
The Library of Borrowed Hearts is a dual-timeline romance with multiple POVs, but it seems the main characters are the stressed older sister/guardian who gave up her dreams to care for her siblings after her mother abandoned her three younger siblings and the old, nightmare of a neighbor who has a habit of stealing the balls and frisbees that fall in his yard. We are thrust into a mystery romance documented in the margins of old library books. We meet a young, sensitive, backward Jasper falling for the new rebellious librarian, Catherine, as well as present day grumpy Jasper. We also meet Chloe Sampson, the not-yet-librarian, who is taking care of her three siblings who prove to be a handful. We are introduced to Zach, who saves "Noodle" Sampson after a nasty fall as well as a cast of other characters throughout the novel.
Cozy down in your reading spot, because you will not want to close this book until you've reached the end!...more
