Ain't It Funny was a great read about a young girl dealing with the difficulties of navigating some big feelings and compulsions at school and home while also dealing with the separation and impending divorce of her parents. But Maya has a plan to get her parent's back together, when she's not working after school at her family's Russian deli, she's coming up with jokes for her comedy routine for the school's talent show, with the help of her comedian father and supportive mother, she determined for things to end with a happily ever after.
Such a fantastic and realistic middle-grade novel that is full of heart and hope. One if 100% recommend to any middle-grade reader.

This tense retelling had me on the edge of my seat, desperate to see what would come next, what obstacle our unlikely heroine, our underdog had to face. Deception is the biggest theme in this book and the author had such a cool and unique take on this classic story.
I highly recommend for readers who enjoy a good fairytale retelling, with pieces of the story being inspired by many other retellings, it's a well-rounded and dark telling of the story that will have you hanging on every word.

There's a few things that I really enjoyed about On an Wing and a Tear, the first being that though there were some fantastical elements to the book, it seemed wholly realistic and there was so many different things going on, a cross-country road trip, animals that communicated, stalking, complicated family dynamics, found family, and returning to their history and home were among the few. I also really enjoyed learning that Smith's other works connect back to this story and the characters in this story.
This is a beautiful and fun middle-grade read that I recommend any age read!...more
You Better Watch Out is a fact-paced holiday horror-thriller that had me on the edge of my seat! I decided to read this book because I love holiday You Better Watch Out is a fact-paced holiday horror-thriller that had me on the edge of my seat! I decided to read this book because I love holiday books AND James Murray (big Impractical Jokers fan). The story itself kept me hooked though. I listened to this as an audiobook and though I wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator's voice (no hate, the "S" sounds were a bit loud and hard), it wasn't hard to stick through it as I enjoyed the storyline. This is absolutely one that I would recommend to others and cannot wait to hear what my book club has to say about it!...more

Someone in the Attic is a terrifying mystery-horror that literally had me sleeping with the bedroom door locked. Mara did an amazing job at casting probable doubt on many characters and stoking the flame of fear for someone who is already afraid of what could possibly be in the attic. The pacing was fantastic, with a great beginning hook that draws you in. There is a dual timeline, a past event slowly revealing itself over the course of the book. This is definitely a book I recommend!...more
