I鈥檓 not generally into books with ghosts鈥 but this has held my interest, especially learning about this piece of Salvadoran history. The indigo dyes. The erasure of blackness. It鈥檚 a little hard to lock in on the history because of the magical realism, but interesting nonetheless, and vivid.
We knew, of course, that the signs that said COMMUNIST really meant INDIO. They meant poor, coffee worker, barbarous. Brown skin, white wrinkly cotton, indios who gathered in groups of three or more. We cackled.
It references the legend of la Siguanaba, which means hideous woman, who roam La the countryside, cursed for eternity. 鈥淲e know who she really is. La sigua is a woman made monstrous by her grief for her stolen child She frightens dangerous men in order to protect herself from harm.鈥
鈥滱rtists, in particular, loved this way of thinking about color; it seemed to confirm something intuitive that they鈥檇 been at work on since the moment they were conscious of seeing the world. But this talk of color also appealed to people like the General, who thought that the shortcut to bettering the nation鈥檚 race, ascending the tower of skin tones in those casta paintings, might be found in an alchemy of diluted science and faith.鈥

It took me a chapter or two to settle into the writing style. It鈥檚 a little frenetic. But there are lots of fun pithy comments paired with interesting data points, and a very easy to follow structure. Quick idea, description of why it鈥檚 important, a few tips for how to execute on it. Times 52. I鈥檓 getting excited about actually reading one of these per week and seeing what I can make stick!
