There were laughs, adventure, fighting, tears, death and finally the sizzling heat breaks in to full blown fire. I enjoyed this book, its creative world and the characters. It was slow in parts but worth getting past.
I am looking forward to seeing what happens next.

Alaroc Phaethon is no exception. He brutally kills Nissa the Harpy General, imprisons the rest of the Harpies, and forces Taliyah to become his bride knowing she will be sacrificed in 30 days’ time. What ensues is Gena at her chaotic best! Thrills, chills, sexual tension, scary battles, a few cameos, you know…the works!

I read the reviews and must say I am very surprised by the wide range of feedback and low ratings. I guess this is one of those books readers will either love or hate and I fall under the love category! An author who gets this kind of response out of readers should be proud of what they have accomplished as it is obvious people have very strong opinions of the book, characters and futuristic world created here by Alaya.
I agree that this book should probably be categorized under New Adult and NOT Young Adult but Alaya Dawn Johnson did not go into extreme detail in the love scenes so I am not as shocked by this as others seem to be. Yes there is violence, swearing (but keep in mind that is a realistic view of the way teenagers really talk when the adults are not around) and drugs but this is also a different place in time and world views have changed. The people of Palmares Três are more open to things that are still taboo in this day and age and nowhere does the author encourage this behavior (and it is just a story after all).
That being said I fell in love with this book, its characters, and Palmares Três. Alaya writes with such eloquence! I thought that the author explained this new, futuristic Brazilian city beautifully. (Come on people, why would an author ever give away too much detail at the beginning of a story?! It becomes clearer as the story progresses.) I was transported through time to a world now controlled by woman who never really age and though in power no longer relate to the population they govern. It was truly a unique journey and I felt so much throughout its course from laughter, outrage, happiness, excitement, betrayal and finally the tears fell. The main character June grows up through her many rebellions, trials and tribulations but is as stubborn as any teenager right down to the end. ...more
