"You're not lost. You never were. You just forgot." "What did I forget?" I asked. "Who you were."
I've been in labor for almost 34 hours when I've had my son, and this book was almost as physically painful and emotionally damaging.
Son of the Drowned Empire is a filler book but also a journey that is impossible to skip if you're a fan of this epic series. Being inside Rhyan's head, getting to know his deepest fears and desires, learning about the scars in his soul, is an experience. An angsty, brutal one, but it was all about Rhyan and I was totally here for it.
Was all of it necessary? Probably, but not definitely. There were things I would have rather not known about, others that broke my heart and a few that drove me a little mad, but this Rhyan POV was e v e r y t h i n g, and it made me love Rhyan even more.

"It's been so long since I've felt this way about anyone," I murmur the emotions too buoyant to keep submerged any longer. "What way is that?" she asks, her voice breathy husky, hopeful. "Like you're the moon and I'm the tides, and every thought, every need, every want, is drawn to you, Maren." I laugh to myself. "You're right, this is madness an I'm drowning and I don't give a damn. Let me drown in you, will ya?"

Listen to me, ending a book like that is just freaking RUDE.

After a few days, and after I've had the chance to properly sit down and think back about this book, I've sadly decided to take down half a star from its initial 4-star ratings and round it down to 3. While I've had fun with this and still consider Clare Sager and her writing a gift to humanity, I couldn't get past some technicalities, and had some problems getting through the second part. The first half of the book had me excitedly enthralled; I could never really relate to Kat, but I liked her character despite and because of her faults. The plot was interesting and the romance kept me on my toes. Unfortunately, the pace started slowing down and the scenes became repetitive. I still had no trouble finishing this and reading it didn't feel like a chore, but I wished it kept my interest alive like it did at the start and there were a few things that don't make much sense I wish I could overlook, but inevitably can't. As much as I loved the romance and was totally into Bastian's charm, I felt like something was missing about his character, something I can't pinpoint. I also expected more groveling, on both parts and there were moments I felt bored with it all, and didn't find the characters fascinating enough to keep me guessing their next move. But, of course, it had its good and very enjoyable moments, too. For one, Sager's dialogues are always exquisite. I love her banter so much and her writing is easy to follow and not pompous at all. The spice was simply excellent and some of the first interactions betweeen Kat and Bastian were so full of sexual tension I had butterflies. I also loved the Beneath Black Sails references and Vice and Knigh's appearance. I've already mentioned that Kat and I don't resonate on a deep level, but I appreciated how tenacious she was.
Overall, this was very entertaining and I'm pretty sure I'll read the second book when it comes out. Clare Sager proved once again that she knows how to write a spicy story when needed. The fact that I buddy read this with the Glitchread Girls, made it even more special.

Jokes aside, I went into this with zero expectations, which is why it doesn't hurt a bit the fact that this let me down completely. I mean...it wasn't THAT bad and I've honestly read worse stuff lately, but the plot was really messy, the romance super cheesy and the writing very immature, repetitive and some lines really gave me secondhand embarrassment. I could totally see myself reading this book ironically and ironically tolerating it, but not more than that. Alas, I'm not in a silly mood, which means I don't regret putting this aside, especially because I'm also not even interested in seeing how this ends. I don't usually rate or add to my reading challenge books I DNF, but I'm m giving myself permission to do it with this one because I made it to 83% before giving up....more

I'm gonna start this review by pointing out a few things. First, this book had absolutely no right title and font-baiting me so hard. I don't think I need to elaborate on why. If anything, it could resemble ACOTAR, not TCP. Yes, I've read the blurb and I definitely wasn't expecting a The Cruel Prince retelling, but...same font? Almost same title? Sounds made on purpose, to me. And second...a character named Cardian? Really???
Anyway, despite what my TCP-loving, petty ass might think of the title, this book wasn't that bad. Seymour's writing is alright and the plot, while it could still be improved, is very fast-paced and the books never has a dull moment. It also jumps straight into the story, right from the beginning, and to me, that's always a positive trait. I recommend you get into this not expecting anything, especially not anything complicated.
I unfortunately had a hard time liking Dani, the main character; she sounded impossibly immature and had the habit of replying with swear words to everything people told her that she didn't like. To me, the banter some reviewers felt the need to praise, was nothing but this. That's what kids think makes you look and sound like a badass. Again, very immature.
I found the rest of the character very basic and could hardly distinguish them from one another; I like Jeondar a little more than the others, but eve he fell flat in the end. Speaking of the end...meh. The third act conflict where (view spoiler)[everyone started acting like a bitch to Dani with no good reason (hide spoiler)] was unbearable to read. I felt like it was very artificial and put there for the sake of drama. I also didn't like how the whole secret thing drug out for so long. I would have walked out on all of them and took their food with me. And why not, I would have taken Jeondar with me, as well.
Least but not last...THE PRINCE. I couldn't for the life of me think of him as a worthy male love interest. He was as appealing as plain toast at an all-you-can-eat buffet, and his non-existent cruelty is what makes the title of this book even less believable. The ending makes up for it a little, but more than "cruel" I'd use a term that starts with A and ends with -SSHOLE.
One thing I'm really glad about is that at least this isn't an insta-love kind of situation, and there was very little chemistry between Dani and Kalyll. I couldn't understand how they got from enemies to whatever they was, but to call this a soul-consuming enemies-to-lovers would be a big stretch.
I know that this book is a spin-off, so I didn't expect much backstory on Dani or the fae realm, but I wouldn't have minded some, especially considering this could be read as a standalone. I also figured out a little after I started it that this is a Beauty and the Beast retelling, and let me tell you...it's by far the weakest one I've read.
