The reveal of the big event was saved for last, and I felt like that took away from the purpose of the story. Kids may not be able to focus on all of the things Donovan does through out the day before the big event, especially because they are ordinary series of little events. I did not see much cultural diversity and I did not see much opportunity for exposure to multiple perspectives and values. I may be over thinking it, but I also feel like it is a stereotype for one woman to wear a suit while other wears a dress. This book would be a good read to introduce kids into the idea of same-sex parents. ...more

A family could be big or small as long as there is love for all! The illustration is awesome and had many representation of different cultural backgrounds. Young children will like this book because of all the different ways they can connect to it and learn about different types of families as well. Great read!...more

I don't think it is very appealing to children, especially if they have never been introduced to the idea of different families. It does offer a variety of things to think about, question, and consider. Some of the points were very blunt and I feel not really accurate. I get where the author is coming from but I do not feel like children will really understand that two moms or two dads can love and do the same things other parents can do. This book chose to use words like "gay" and "lesbian", I would definitely talk to my children about these terms before reading the story to avoid and confusion or inappropriate use of the words. The illustrations could've helped enhance the book a bit more but they were fairly dull and didn't show much diversity. This is a good book to read to children, after they are already familiar with the idea of same-sex parents, why they are same-sex parents, and how they are just as awesome as anyone else's parents.

Great for counting and using real life events to help kids count and make a connection. I am looking for books that emphasize on diverse families. This could spark conversations about same-sex parents but it does not really give detail but the focus is counting and I like that it is realistic people counting in real life scenarios, instead of just using cartoons, fruits, and shapes!...more

Parents that go out of their way to love, care, and support their children are what help kids grow into wonderful adults. It does not matter if they are a same-sex couple or not, all that matters is the love they have as a family.
I will say that I did not really like the stereotypical short hair the lesbian moms had. The story had a diverse group of characters. However, I often see illustrations of white people being the ones against gay marriage. There are many bullies out there, of all colors.
It is hard to cover everything in a children's book, but I felt like a few things were unclear. People do not support gay marriage for a lot of reasons and they are not always mean. It was never stated that the mean mom was unappreciative of their sexual orientation. She could've been angry that they adopted kids, that they adopted so many kids, and maybe that they adopted children of different ethnicity. Maybe she was annoyed that they were having a good time!
Overall, great book to get the idea of same-sex parents out there. ...more

It is not realistic because animals are being used but it still has great illustrations and definitely gets the main message that families are about who love you, not about what they look like. The rhyming, illustrations, and simplicity of the book can keep the children interested. If I were a child, I probably would not have noticed the two dads and no mom, I would be focused on the activities they were doing. Unless I had two dads myself, then I would be able to relate. So, I think this a great book for children who are beginning to read and to get them familiar with the concept of same-sex parents with out them even realizing it. If they are exposed to the ideas early, it will limit confusion and judgement in the future because it will already be "normal" to them. is interesting to children. This book is very simple, it does not go into cultural diversity; it does not include a rich plot, problem, or solution. It is age appropriate for beginner readers and the activities the characters are doing will definitely gain interest and help children relate it to what they play with their family. Because the book is short and sweet, there was not a lot of room for different perspectives and values. At that age, children typically only see their perspective , and then other books when they are older will include more things to question and consider. I did not notice any stereotypes of biases, just a family having fun playing together!

Kids will recognize the problem and resolution easily because they may be familiar with classroom parties and dilemmas in other circumstances.
I like how this book shows diversity within families by having grandparents, aunts, uncles, and even female same-sex parents. However, I feel like it was counterproductive when the other classmate with two moms looked puzzled and insecure when planning for father's day. I would think the moral of the story helps kids be proud of their family and recognize their parents for who they are but it is showing that the classmate didn't learn that.
