After attending secondary school he studied at the Saint Petersburg Mining Institute.

Wars between and on behalf of Empires were a regular feature of the decades then. Garshin volunteered to serve in the Russian army at the beginning of the Russo-Turkish War in 1877.

He began as a private in the Balkans campaign and was wounded in action. By the end of the war, in 1878, he had been promoted to officer rank.

By now Garshin, having previously published some articles and reviews in newspapers, wished to devote himself to a literary career. The decision made he resigned his army commission.

His time as a soldier provided rich experiences for his early stories. His first ‘Four Days’ was related as the interior monologue of a wounded soldier left for dead on the battlefield for four days, face to face with the corpse of a Turkish soldier he had killed, gained him early admiration as an author of note.

He wrote perhaps only 20 stories, but their influence was immense, although in these more modern times he is barely remembered and lives in the more prolific shadows of others. His characters are superbly worked into stories that come alive in the intensity and reality of his prose.

Garshin’s most well-known story is ‘The Red Flower’, also known as ‘Scarlet Blossom’ and is easily amongst the first rank of stories dealing with mental health issues.

Despite early literary success, he himself experienced periodical bouts of mental illness.

In one such bout Garshin attempted to commit suicide by throwing himself down the stone stairs leading into his apartment building. Although not immediately fatal, Vsevolod Garshin died as a result of his injuries in a St Petersburg hospital on 5th April 1888. നായികയെ സംബന്ധിച്ച കഥ ഇതാണ്ഃ ശചി സ്വര്‍ഗ്ഗത്ത് ചന്ദ്രോത്സവം നടത്തിയപ്പോള്‍ പങ്കെടുത്ത ചന്ദ്രന്‍ മേനകയില്‍ അനുരക്തനായി പിറ്റേന്ന് പാരിജാതത്തണലില്‍ കൂടാമെന്ന് കടക്കണ്ണുകാട്ടി. അത് ചന്ദ്രന്റെ മടിയിലിരുന്ന ചന്ദ്രിക മനസ്‌സിലാക്കി മേനകയുടെ രൂപത്തില്‍ പിറ്റേദിവസം പാരിജാതത്തണലിലെത്തി ചന്ദ്രനുമായി രമിച്ചു. മുന്‍നിശ്ചയപ്രകാരം വന്നുചേര്‍ന്ന മേനക ഇതു കണ്ടമ്പരന്നു. ഇളിഭ്യനായ ചന്ദ്രന്‍, ഭൂമിയില്‍ചെന്ന് വാരാംഗനയായി ജീവിക്കട്ടെ എന്ന് ഭാര്യ ചന്ദ്രികയെ ശപിച്ചു. ഭൂമിയില്‍ ചന്ദ്രോത്സവം നടത്തിയാല്‍ ശാപമോക്ഷമുണ്ടാകുമെന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു.

About the Author
Global violin icon Dr L. Subramaniam is the world’s leading authority of South Indian classical music and violin, having performed for more than sixty-five years now. A childhood prodigy, he was honoured with the title ‘Violin Chakravarti’ at the age of twenty-five. In his long and illustrious career since, Dr Subramaniam has collaborated with the greatest musicians of his time. He is the only musician who has performed/recorded Carnatic classical music, Western classical music, both orchestral and non-orchestral, and composed for, conducted and performed as a soloist with many major orchestras, scored for films and ballets, collaborated with some of the greatest musicians of his time (including George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, Yehudi Menuhin, and many others), from different genres of music including jazz, occidental, jugalbandhis with North Indian musicians and world music. He created the global fusion concept in the mid-1970s.
He has mastered various techniques and genres, explored new avenues (he was a musical advisor to Peter Brook about the sound concepts for his “Mahabharata”), even composed music for a select few films (Salaam Bombay and Mississippi Masala, among others, and was featured as a soloist in Bernardo Bertolucci’s Little Buddha and Cotton Mary of Merchant–Ivory Productions). Yet, his technical mastery finds its truest experience in the service of Carnatic music, the tradition he has inherited from his father and guru, Professor V Lakshminarayana.
He has received several awards and honours, including the coveted Padma Bhushan in 2001 and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for “The Most Creative Artist” in 1990 from the President of India.
