There's something about the combination of visuals and storytelling in this book that make reading it similar to an emotional fever dream. The themes explored here cut deep into my emotional spectrum and explored dark, hidden feelings that are uncomfortable, yet intimate and strangely romantic to search. I felt such a deep connection to the characters Straczynski created. Their struggles, ordeals and revelations bonded me to them because I could feel them so closely.

I absolutely love dark, hopeless romance, and I guess all romance is that, because love and doom seem to be inseparable. The notion that they are inseparable intensifies both spectrums in their purest forms. They define each other.

A powerful personal account of life's primal dance with defeat and death. When you have lived - and in essence fought - as long as Santiago has, it would be natural to assume that a man begins losing things to fight for, but man was created to endure, evolved to conquer, and although Santiago has accepted his mortality, he never turns away from his nature. When the most monumental challenge of his life reveals itself to him, he can do nothing but answer, nothing but thrust his soul and his body and his blood into the endless unknown oceans of doubt because there is nothing more pure than rising in defiance against seemingly indomitable forces and discovering your purpose and measure within the rabid fray.

This is my first entry into the mind of Lovecraft and I have to say I am astonished by his style of writing. Already I can tell that he is a master of terror and horror. The way he uses your own imagination against you to craft your own nightmare is truly masterful.

Steppenwolf 16631 Steppenwolf is a poetical self-portrait of a man who felt himself to be half-human and half-wolf. This Faust-like and magical story is evidence of Hesse's searching philosophy and extraordinary sense of humanity as he tells of the humanization of a middle-aged misanthrope. Yet his novel can also be seen as a plea for rigorous self-examination and an indictment of the intellectual hypocrisy of the period. As Hesse himself remarked, "Of all my books Steppenwolf is the one that was more often and more violently misunderstood than any of the others".]]> 256 Hermann Hesse 0140282580 Carl 0 currently-reading 4.15 1927 Steppenwolf

The Count of Monte Cristo 7126 The epic tale of wrongful imprisonment, adventure and revenge, in its definitive translation

Thrown in prison for a crime he has not committed, Edmond Dantès is confined to the grim fortress of If. There he learns of a great hoard of treasure hidden on the Isle of Monte Cristo and he becomes determined not only to escape, but also to use the treasure to plot the destruction of the three men responsible for his incarceration. Dumas’ epic tale of suffering and retribution, inspired by a real-life case of wrongful imprisonment, was a huge popular success when it was first serialized in the 1840s.

Invisible Man 16981 Invisible Man is one of those rare novels that have changed the shape of American literature. For not only does Ralph Ellison's nightmare journey across the racial divide tell unparalleled truths about the nature of bigotry and its effects on the minds of both victims and perpetrators, it gives us an entirely new model of what a novel can be.

As he journeys from the Deep South to the streets and basements of Harlem, from a horrifying "battle royal" where black men are reduced to fighting animals, to a Communist rally where they are elevated to the status of trophies, Ralph Ellison's nameless protagonist ushers readers into a parallel universe that throws our own into harsh and even hilarious relief. Suspenseful and sardonic, narrated in a voice that takes in the symphonic range of the American language, black and white, Invisible Man is one of the most audacious and dazzling novels of our century.]]>

The Book of Five Rings —which has become a well-known classic among American business people, studied for its insights into the Japanese approach to business strategy—was composed in 1643 by the famed duelist and undefeated samurai Miyamoto Musashi. Unlike previous editions of The Book of Five Rings, Thomas Cleary's is an accessible translation, free of jargon, with an introduction that presents the spiritual background of the warrior tradition. Along with Musashi's text, Cleary translates another important Japanese classic on leadership and The Book of Family Traditions on the Art of War by Yagyu Munenori, which highlights the ethical and spiritual insights of Taoism and Zen as they apply to the way of the warrior.]]>
