✩‧₊˚ Poppy War Review ✩‧₊˚
⭑⭑⭑ 500/5 stars ⭑⭑
“War doesn't determine who's right. War determines who remains.”
!! Warning- read the trigger warning before you read this book because it's very dark.!!
Ahhhhhhhhh this book!!! My expectations were high since I'd heard so much about this book yet the Poppy War exceeded all those expectations. This book was such a masterful study of War and the atrocities humans commit, with such an interesting plot, and flawed yet completely lovable characters. This book is maybe even more relevant and important now than when it came out in 2018, due to current events, and I'm sure it will continue to be such an important book as years pass.
✩‧₊˚ Thing I adored ✩‧₊˚
☼ The plot- The first half of this book was so fantastic, there is nothing I love more than a fantasy school, it's my favorite aspect of many fantasy series such as Fourth Wing and Harry Potter. And Sinegard is one of my favorite of these magical academies so far. But ah the second half of this book...I was left completely shocked, I cried, threw my Kindle, stared shocked at the wall, and did the whole thing. R.F. Kuang's portrayal of war is just done so well, she is an absolute genius. This book was nearly 500 pages and I finished it all in a single day, this might have a lot to do with the internet being out the day I read it, but I honestly did not put it down for more than a few minutes.
☼ The characters-
Favorites- Rin, Kitay, Jiang, Nehza, all of the Cike.
Ugh how does this book manage to have so many side characters yet they are all so devolped and lovable, I'm gonna start with the main character Rin and she was just such an amazing character. Rin is so amazingly strong, determined, and intelligent a combination which creates one of the most powerful female characters I've read about. I truly loved Rin, she was so well-developed and impressive. Rin commits some completely unjustifiable actions, yet she has a reason for everything she does, and her character arc is so well done. There are so many other side characters in this book that I love, but I feel like this review is already really long and I'm tired of writing. But just know that I loved them all!
☼ The Writing/Themes-
I feel as if a lot of books have tragic scenes just for the sake of having tragic scenes, but The Poppy War had some of the most tragic violent scenes I've ever read, yet they feel completely necessary. The truth is as much as it would be comforting to dismiss this thing as fantasy, they are things that happened, and on some scale still happen today. The writing in The Poppy War is also just so good, and the worldbuilding was fantastic.
✩‧₊˚ Thing I disliked ✩‧₊˚
Nothing this was absolute perfection.
✩‧₊˚ Quotes ✩‧₊˚
"When man begins to think that he is responsible for writing the script of the world, he forgets the forces that dream up our reality."
"Children ceased to be children when you put a sword in their hands. When you taught them to fight a war, then you armed them and put them on the front lines, they were not children anymore. They were soldiers."
"It was, simply, what happened when one race decided that the other was insignificant."
