message 301: by Kris (new)

Kris (kmell33) | 122 comments I just started Gilead by Marilynne Robinson and am listening to Stormy Weather by Paulette Jiles.

I'm looking to begin Don Quixote later this week.

message 302: by Jim (new)

Jim Townsend | 143 comments Good evening,

Playing catch up with the classics. Having finished Little Women (1870) by Louisa May Alcott (1832-88) on July 11, 2015, I am now reading A Laodicean : a Story of To-day (1881) by Thomas Hardy (1840-1928), both of which I started last year.

Will I ever get to mustard? ;)

Jim

Loretta | 2200 comments Jim,

Love your line, "will I ever get to mustard"! Haven't heard it in a while. Made me smile! Thanks. Happy reading!

message 304: by Nathan (new)

Nathan | 302 comments I'm currently juggling three longer books: Don Quixote, Little Women and Foucault's Pendulum.

I don't usually read a whole bunch of stories at the same time, but these are different enough I don't think I'll get them confused.

message 305: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments Nathan, I would think not! :)!

My copy should be here today!

message 308: by Kainzow (new)

Kainzow | 15 comments I'm currently reading 'The Restaurant at the End of the Universe'.After that I'll probably move to 'Life, the Universe and Everything'.
Then,maybe I'll pick 1984.
I want to read Go Set a Watchman, but it'll take a while before reaching me.

message 309: by Janice (new)

Janice Sitts | 39 comments I'm choosing not to read her new release for the moment. I don't want it to prejudice my wonderful memories of To Kill a Mockingbird...

message 310: by Loretta (new)

Loretta | 2200 comments Gee Janice, I kinda feel the same way.

message 311: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments You're not alone Janice, I'll never read it, both because I don't want to spoil Mockingbird and also because I don't agree with how it's been published and marketed. Have you heard they've found a third now?

I'm currently reading I Am Legend which is not the sort of book I read at all, but I am really enjoying the writing and the story. I've seen the modern film version, but it's quite different.

message 312: by Anirban (new)

Anirban Nanda (anirbannanda) | 4 comments Currently reading Go Set a Watchman. It's wonderful. Definitely has exceeded my expectation.

message 313: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Mansu, who knows what's really happening. Tonja Carter, seems to be pulling all the strings and it's a bit concerning that nobody actually talks directly to Harper Lee, not even her publishers. It sounds like they are manuscripts or drafts, but not something that she chose to publish in her younger and more lucid years. I think it's highly questionable that they are being 'discovered' and published now.

message 314: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Johansson (pingi1) | 35 comments I might aswell write here aswell :)! I'm currently reading Frankenstein. It's extra fun since it's in english and I usually read in swedish (my first language) and the language in frankenstein is not what I'm used to. That only makes it so much more fun and interesting to read. Older language in swedish is easy for me but english, well it sure is more of a challenge :)!

message 315: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Ingrid, I hope you're enjoying Frankenstein it wasn't what I was expecting, but I really loved it. I couldn't even attempt to read something in another language, even after studying 5 years of French. Languages are not my strong point.

message 316: by Ingrid (new)

Ingrid Johansson (pingi1) | 35 comments In Sweden we start study english from the age of nine up until we're 18-19, and I've also lived in Ireland eight years ago for 1,5 years so my english should be ok ^_^ . I'm just not used to read full books in english, but it's good practice :)

Jerry | 3 comments Kris wrote: "I just started Gilead by Marilynne Robinson

Kris,
I read Gilead last month and kicked myself for not doing it sooner. I'd be interested in what you think.

message 318: by Pink (new)

Pink | 5491 comments Ingrid, I think most people across Europe are more schooled in languages. Here in the UK it hasn't been such a universal thing and I think we're lazy as we expect everyone else to know English anyway. I wish I could speak other languages, but I struggled a lot learning French in high school and that's put me off trying more as an adult. I can speak a little French to get by when I'm abroad and can read some, but I'm far from fluent to hold conversations or try a book.

Kris and Jerry, I've heard good things about Gilead and Home, but I haven't tried either yet.

Janice thank you for the recommendation. I was at my local library last night looking for my Canadian author. No luck with your Louise Penny suggestion or Tytti's suggestion of Alice Munro, nothing on the shelves by those authors. I struck out on the first two I looked for using the list Pink forwarded and finally hit pay dirt by finding Fifth Business, it'll be my next read, my challenge still goes on.

Jerry, so far I am really enjoying it. You are right, like you, I have always avoided reading this for some unknown reason.

I have never read anything by Marilynne Robinson before so wasn't sure what to expect but I am savoring the story. The words just flow from the page.

Such good recommendations. I want to read them all, but...

About 1/3 way through The Dovekeepers -- very good so far. Hoping to still read East of Eden this month too.

Kathy, I LOVED The Dovekeepers and recommended it several years ago at my real life book club - we all LOVE it, historical/action packed and really had you following along with her life...post what you think when you finish, I'm anxious to hear what you think!

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments I'm reading Thomas Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd for a buddy read.

I tried Little Women and CNFd it at 6%.

I tried East of Eden and CNFd it at 43%. I loved The Grapes of Wrath though.

Andrea, your acronyms, CNFd, does that mean 'could not finish'?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments Yes, CNFd means "could not finished it." I'm using it with the d on the end to make it a verb. Bad grammar I know.

That's ok! at least you acknowledge that you are using it as a verb, kids half my age don't even know what a verb is!!!
On a different note, you didn't
like these books? any particular reason why not?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments @Janice

I didn't care for the way East of Eden was narrated. I was very disappointed because I loved Grapes of Wrath. However, I realize that as a reader it is unfair to expect an author to use the same style for everything he/she writes.

With regard to Little Women, I may try it again. I just wasn't in the mood for for all of the cutesy-ness.

Ingrid: thanks for your views on "Frankenstein". It's on my "to be read" list. I may have to bump it up a little now!

Yes. I read 1984 in high school. It was a good book and I enjoyed it. Did you ever read his other book, also a classic, "Animal Farm"? I also read that and it was good also.

Kainzow I'm not sure why the book has this title since I've not read it although it is on my To Be Read list. I would imagine that you'd have to read the book to understand the title :).

I originally read it in 1984 and reread it a few weeks ago. It seems creepy to me how plausible a world like that seems, where governments control everyone through fear. It isn't particularly dated either. The tele-screens everywhere watching all the time are all too realistic now. Completely understandable why this classic endures.

I picked this up a few months ago, but it wasn't the right time for me to read it and I just couldn't get into the story. I will return to it one day though, as I've heard good things. I hope you're enjoying it.

Was it hard to get into?

Andrea AKA Catsos Person (catsosperson) | 1685 comments It wasn't hard to get into at all. I was engaged right away.

I'm told that a lot of Hardy's books are depressing and Madding Crowd is supposed to be one of the least depressing of his titles.
