Lisa | 617 comments Are there any books that you're embarrassed to be seen reading?? Guilty pleasures that you love, but don't want anyone else to know about?

In high school I went through a romance novel phase (which I am now embarrassed even to admit to openly haha) and could never bring the books out in public to read. The covers and the titles and the back blurb description were all just too horribly corny and embarrassing.

A current guilty pleasure is 'Twilight'. I hate admitting outloud that I actually enjoyed reading the series, but I did ... and flew through them in about a week.

Michelle (shadowrose) At the moment I can't think of any embarassing ones, I'm usually not really embarrassed about what I read. I'd think it would have be the romance novels with the outrageous covers because I've truly never read one that I allowed the cover to show.

Pamela(AllHoney) (pamelap) I'm sure I have some but I can't think of any right now. There have been some erotica romance that I would never read in public because of the covers.

new_user None that I can think of. Mostly, I read what I want. If I don't want people's stares to disrupt my reading, I can usually find a way to cover/do away with the cover, e.g. ebooks.

Ohhh, god. That brought to mind how the guys used to tease me and you whenever they saw us with our romance novels. LOL My US history teacher teased me about it once too... so did our Psych teacher...LOL

Tricia Schneider (triciaschneider) | 18 comments I read romances in high school, too. No one said a word to me and I had fully expected them to since I never hid what I read. The only person who ever teased me about them was my uncle, but he teased me about EVERYTHING! :-)

stormhawk | 1184 comments Hairy Chested Men's Adventure novels ...

The Mercenary by Axel Kilgore
Saigon Commandos by Jonathan Cain
The Survivalist by Jerry Ahern
The Destroyer

Oh, and Gor by John Norman. I've read quite a few of those. One of my friends got me hooked on those a few years back.

Lisa | 617 comments Another embarrassing favorite is Lj Smith. I loved all her silly soulmate vampire books in high school and bough quite a few of them. Looking back the writing nor the plot were particular good, but unlike my romance novel phase, I can't bring myself to actually give my LJ Smith books away. So I have them sitting in a second row on my bookshelf hidden behind more acceptable looking books. haha.

The even sillier thing is that I won't actually read these books again because I know it will just be disappointing so I'd rather just have them sit in a fond place in my memory. Therefore they just sit there to collect dust.

Kristina | 778 comments I will not be embarassed! I'm at work with Warcraft war of the Ancients: the Sundering sitting right next to me. Although I used to take Warcraft books with me if I knew I was going to be in court for a while and i'd hide it behind my files.

Mawgojzeta Valley of the Dolls - dated, technically garbage, and I love it. Re-read it every couple of years and have never admitted it to anyone (until now). I even tuck the book back behind others on my shelf.

stormhawk | 1184 comments I guess I do sometimes feel oddly, although not necessarily embarassed, while reading witchcraft and tarot books at the nuthouse.

Jackie (thenightowl) I would have to second Twilight as a guilty pleasure. lol. I would add pretty much any cheesy romance novel, especially if it has buff men in the cover. Oh and I love highlanders. I don't know why but a buff man with Scottish accent just makes me melt. Julie Garwood's earlier stuff usually satisfies me in this category.

Jackie M | 452 comments In the early 90's I read all of Jackie Collins books.

Strangely enough I don't really have any books that I am embarrassed to like. When I was a teen I would sometimes be embarrassed that I liked romance novels, because people always called them "soft porn". Now...it doesn't bother me...

Lisa | 617 comments Maybe in the future no one will have to worry about being embarrassed by novels they read with the Kindle and all. I read a very interesting article (I'll try to remember the name of the magazine later I can assure you it wasn't Cosmo or anything though...haha) about the Kindle and how that hinders judging people by what they read. Occasionally this is in a books snobbish way (I've probably done it before), but sometimes seeing what someone else is reading makes you feel connected to them because they like this random book that you loved too. However, now with the Kindle you can't see what people are reading, so you don't know if they are interested in Faulkner or some trashy tabloid. Takes some of the fun out of it though (unless of course you are the one who doesn't want others to know what you are actually reading on the train is a book with a cover that would have a girls breasts popping out and a guys shirt open...hehehe).

stormhawk | 1184 comments I think merely having a Kindle says a lot about a person even if you don't know what they are reading.

(particularly the Kindle 1, we're the folks that stepped out into the unknown world and took the risk that started the tide rolling and all that ... yeah, I have one.)

stormhawk | 1184 comments Oh, and about embarrassing ... I read Dogs and Goddesses and actually thought it was cute.

But I didn't buy it. I got it out of the library.

I think it sounds fun.

It was. What's weird is that my cow orker, who usually loves that kind of book, bought it independently of me and couldn't make it past the first two chapters. This is the woman who forced me to read Twilight!
