River of Blue Fire (Otherland #2) by Tad Williams
/book/show/1...

- This edition was paperback
- It did not seem to be epic fantasy, it seemed pretty average size for what was (iirc) an a mass market paperback-sized novel
- Does not seem to be anything by Tad Williams, Robin Hobb, Lloyd Alexander, Guy Gavriel Kay, Philip Pullman, Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Goodkind or Terry Brooks.
- It did not seem to be part of a long series or expansive universe at the time. There were five or less books available by the author. (This doesn't mean much, but it was a fair sized library for a high school and they seemed to carry most of an author's available work.)

Thank you for the suggestion, but that does not seem to be it.

What I remember:
- Adult/General fantasy (adult as in not YA or it's precursors)
- This was in 2005/2006
- Maybe published in 90s? It didn't seem new at the time
- Dark cover with a dark haired or dark cloaked man (maybe working magic?)
- I think it was book 2 or 3 in a series
- I did not read the first book(s) (I did this on purpose after having such success jumping into The Belgariad on The Queen of Sorcery)
- Reference to fire or flames in title
- Not anything by Robert Jordan, David Eddings or Anne McCaffrey
- I only read part of the beginning, but it seemed like they were preparing for a ritual of sorts, going over what they had done and what they needed to do.
- I feel like there was a reference to a specific cloak, robe or general outfit that was important to this ritual?
I feel like I'll definitely remember the cover when I see it. Sorry it's not much to go on!
