Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments Hello! I'm looking for a book I checked out of the high school library but never got to read much of. The details are scattered and non-specific, and for that I'm sorry.

What I remember:
- Adult/General fantasy (adult as in not YA or it's precursors)
- This was in 2005/2006
- Maybe published in 90s? It didn't seem new at the time
- Dark cover with a dark haired or dark cloaked man (maybe working magic?)
- I think it was book 2 or 3 in a series
- I did not read the first book(s) (I did this on purpose after having such success jumping into The Belgariad on The Queen of Sorcery)
- Reference to fire or flames in title
- Not anything by Robert Jordan, David Eddings or Anne McCaffrey
- I only read part of the beginning, but it seemed like they were preparing for a ritual of sorts, going over what they had done and what they needed to do.
- I feel like there was a reference to a specific cloak, robe or general outfit that was important to this ritual?

I feel like I'll definitely remember the cover when I see it. Sorry it's not much to go on!

Bonnie | 290 comments Found this second of a series. Cover and date seem to match your description. Never read it, so not sure about the other details.
River of Blue Fire (Otherland #2) by Tad Williams

/book/show/1...

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments It's a solid suggestion, but that does not seem to be it, sorry.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments More details:

- This edition was paperback
- It did not seem to be epic fantasy, it seemed pretty average size for what was (iirc) an a mass market paperback-sized novel
- Does not seem to be anything by Tad Williams, Robin Hobb, Lloyd Alexander, Guy Gavriel Kay, Philip Pullman, Diana Wynne Jones, Terry Goodkind or Terry Brooks.
- It did not seem to be part of a long series or expansive universe at the time. There were five or less books available by the author. (This doesn't mean much, but it was a fair sized library for a high school and they seemed to carry most of an author's available work.)

SBC (essbeecee) | 1591 comments Could it be Beldan's Fire by Midori Snyder?

Gillian Wiseman (gillianwiseman) | 241 comments Beldan's Fire Link for SBC's suggestion

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments It is not, but thank you for the suggestion.

0possum | 70 comments Fantasy with magic rituals and men wearing cloaks: try Katherine Kurtz or maybe Gene Wolfe. Both are long shots most of their books like that were pre-nineties.

Jeff | 3 comments Here's a book two in a fantasy series with "fire" in the title, published in 2000: The Keep of Fire by Mark Anthony. I don't remember how this book started, but the series in general takes place both in our world and in a fantasy world, and definitely involves magic.

Thank you for the suggestion, but that does not seem to be it.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments It might be Fire Sea (The Death Gate Cycle, #3) by Margaret Weis . The cover seems right in terms of colour and staging. Going to see what my options are in regards to getting hold of a copy, to see if reading the beginning sparks something.
