Tony Straw | 4 comments This is a book I read more than 20 years ago, and it wasn't new then. Begins with Hitler's occupation of Prague before WW2, a young couple newly met (I think) escape into Germany (can't remember their reason). Much of the book is about their flight through the Fichtel Mountains, hiding out in farms and barns. They are captured and separated. Post-war, one is working in Wetzlar and the other tracks him/her down and they are reunited.
On a similar forum years ago, someone suggested it might be the (non-fiction) story of Hanna and Walter Kohner, but I have since got that book and that isn't it. I think (but I could be wrong) that the book I'm looking for is fiction.

Is it more literary fiction or more genre fiction (like thriller etc.)?

Tony Straw | 4 comments Probably more adventure fiction. I'm unsure about the fiction part though: it seemed like adventure fiction all the way through, until the final chapters relating to their lives immediately post-war leading up to when they found each other again. This part of the book had an air of ordinary everyday reality about it.

Tony Straw | 4 comments Recapping. One of those books that reads as fiction, but could be fact. Has a "real" feel to it. I read it in the early-to-mid 1980's. Begins in Prague, Nazi occupation 1939, most of populace happy with it, but our protaganists - two young people, boy and girl, recently met I think - are not. For some reason they need to get to somewhere in Germany, so run away. On the run for weeks. I remember sunny days hiding out in farms and barns in the Fichtel Mountains. They're captured, separated. Years later one is working in Wetzlar, postal clerk or something, the other tracks them down and they're reunited.

Tony Straw | 4 comments I think I can report this one SOLVED. I got some of the details wrong (probably my memory roping in snippets from other books such as the true story of Walter and Hanna Kohner), but I'm reasonably sure the book I had in mind was "The Last Shot" by Hugo Hamilton. Published in 1991, which also means my memory was wrong about when I read it! Interestingly it's two parallel but connected stories 40 years apart, and I had remembered only one of them. But I enjoyed it just as much reading it again only a few weeks ago.

Glad you found your book. I'm surprised at how much people can remember of books they read 20+ years ago. I don't think my memory is as good. :)

Note: Shelved as The Last Shot by Hugo Hamilton.
