馃弳 *Updated* Scoring System
1. Page Points
0.01 points per page (with rounding)
100 to 149 pgs = 1pt
150 to 249 pgs = 2pts
and so on鈥
2. Task Completion
10 points for each monthly theme task completed
Maximum of 100 points per month (10 tasks x 10 points)
3. Bonus Genre
Additional 5 points if the task is completed with a book from the monthly bonus genre
4. Reviews and Summaries
5 points for each book review or summary submitted
Reviews must be at least 200 words to qualify
5. Discussions
5 points for active participation in each book discussion
Discussions must be held in the Buddy Read folder with a mod-approved thread
6. Team Reading Challenge
2 bonus points per book if the entire team reads the same book in a month
7. Diversity Reading Bonus
5 bonus points for reading a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language
8. Monthly Milestone Bonus
50 points if the team completes at least 80% of their monthly reading goals
9. Quarterly Milestone Bonuses
25 points if the team maintains an 80% or higher completion rate of their reading goals for the entire quarter
10. Team Balancing Bonus
To recognize teams that exceed their expected reading totals based on their combined maximum capacities, there is a Team Balancing Bonus. This bonus rewards teams for pushing beyond their limits while maintaining individual reading caps:
5% over Expected Total: 50 bonus points
10% over Expected Total: 100 bonus points
15% over Expected Total: 150 bonus points
20% or more over Expected Total: 200 bonus points
Example: If your team has a combined capacity of 36 books but reads 40 books in a month (11.11% over), your team will earn 100 bonus points.
11. Team Improvement Bonus
To encourage consistent growth and effort, there is a Team Improvement Bonus:
If your team increases its total books read compared to the previous month, you鈥檒l earn an additional 30 bonus points. This bonus applies every month, rewarding teams for striving to improve regardless of their starting point.
Example: If your team read 29 books in Month 1 and increases to 35 books in Month 2, you鈥檒l earn this bonus.
12. Adaptive Scoring System
To level the playing field further, there is an Adaptive Scoring System based on each team鈥檚 total monthly reading capacity:
Tier 1 (41-50 books): No multiplier
Tier 2 (31-40 books): 1.1x multiplier
Tier 3 (21-30 books): 1.2x multiplier
All points earned by the team (including bonuses) will be multiplied by this factor at the end of each month. However, if your team exceeds its tier鈥檚 capacity (e.g., a Tier 3 team with a capacity of 28 books reads into Tier 1 territory by completing 45 books), the multiplier will no longer apply. This adjustment ensures fairness as teams progress into higher tiers.

@Iliana I can see Ashley has mispelled your name. I'll ask her to fix it before the challenge starts
I was honest about everyone's books read per month. Instead of giving how many books people plan to read for the challenge. This was:
Jessica 10
Mrs Geo 10
Kiri 10
Iliana 6
Trip 5
The points you earn will be based on how many books you read compared to your BPM, but everyone should just read how many they're comfortable with and hopefully we can try for some bonus points.

Just having a look at the tasks now, shall be interesting by looks of task. I'm check my shelves see what possible ones to start with in January.

Did you see the update on scoring? Ashley did amazing on figuring it all out and explaining it.
Hi Team! I have updated your Sheet to include the new scoring system. I had to migrate over your book Jessica, so please double check that I didn't miss something.
Also, Iliana, I have corrected your name! Sorry about that!

Ashley,
Can we change my expected BPM? While I usually read quite a bit over the year, I already know that 2025 will be v. demanding and my reading is going to be less. If you need to send me a dm and we can discuss. I had committed to 1 bpm for this challenge. I highly doubt I'll manage 10 bpm for this.

I wouldn't worry too much, I think they just wanted a general idea of what read per month. As honestly I'm likely to be more 1 book a month then I am 5 for actual tasks and what I feel like reading.

Oh.. ok. I thought it meant I had to hit 10 and only any beyond that worked for the bonuses.

Kiri wrote: "I do have a question.. can we double dip on a book/title regarding tasks?"
You get points in general for book you read for each task, reviews, genre fit and such. There is bonuses I believe yeah if we go above and beyond, more then our actual original book counts but not necessary. We can still earn and play with only 1 a month as far as can tell.

You can only use each book for one task. If you are worried you won't be able to read much for the tasks and you want to back out there are two waiting in reserve. Just let me know 馃檪

Are there negatives if we don't read that amount of books for tasks each month? As I don't want to bring team down, if I end up only managing one a month? I'd rather you give the spot to someone who is more commited/able if that's the case.

Kiri and Trip:
As Jessica is the one who signed you up and there seems to be a discrepancy between what you think your BPM is and what was given, I'll allow you to change. BUT, if there is a large jump once the game starts in your actual reads vs your BPM, I will have to change it. Because I've implemented the new scoring method, I am trying to keep it fair and make sure that your BPMs are accurate and not artificially low.
Let me know what you think your actual BPM is and I'll fix your sheet

Hey, I appreciate it. I think I just didn't realize how intense it was going to be, while I do read around 5 books a month. I didn't plan for those to all be task focused, as I'm a mood reader at heart. So didn't want to set team up to fail, if I didn't always meet that goal. Which is why I've dropped out, thanks though 鈽猴笍

Ashley had to update the sheet. Here is the new one
If you select January at the bottom you will see the tasks.
I'll ask if she can update it in message 1 as well.

I looked everywhere I could think of but not on the spreadsheet itself! Reading 10 books p/m won't be a problem but writing a 200 word review on each/any will be. However, I'll do my best.

Now that I think about it that is a lot 馃槀 I'll struggle with that as well. Only picking Contemporary books for January hurt me. I've got so much great Fantasy to read so will try and cram as much in now as I can.

Here's an example of a 200-word book review:
Joanna Philbin's "Since Last Summer" is a light, breezy read that fails to leave a lasting impression. As the sequel to "Rules of Summer," it follows Rory McShane's relationship with Connor Rule in East Hampton, while Isabel Rule grapples with her feelings for Mike and newcomer Evan.
The novel's strengths lie in its easy-to-read style and summery atmosphere, making it a quick beach read. However, it suffers from predictable plot points and character decisions that often feel contrived. The drama and conflicts are typical of young adult fiction, with misunderstandings and poor choices driving much of the narrative.
One notable issue is the inconsistent character development. The recurring characters seem to have undergone drastic changes in the year between books, which feels unrealistic and jarring. Additionally, many of the problems faced by the characters appear self-invented or exaggerated, leading to relationships that lack depth and believability.
While "Since Last Summer" may appeal to fans of light summer romance, it ultimately falls short of its predecessor. The story's predictability and underdeveloped relationships make it a forgettable entry in the young adult genre.

As long as your review is similar to this size, I'll accept it. I won't be putting it through a word counter!! :)

I didn't think you would. I looked at the longest review I've done so far for Regular Bingo & even that didn't reach more than about 140 words. However, it's not a case of can't, more along the lines of 'do-I-really-have-to-in-my-best-whiny-teenage-voice'.
And when I know the answer is yes.

I'm adding this to my TBR right now!

Sounds like there might be some bonus to doing buddy reads, especially if everyone reads 1 book that is the same. That's kinda cool.
I don't understand some of them.
7. Diversity Reading Bonus
5 bonus points for reading a book by an author from an underrepresented group or a book translated from another language
what does this one mean?

Sounds like there might be some bonus to doing budd..."
With MM it would be hard to get these points. So I haven't thought much about it, but I assumed it was to do with ethnicity or possibly a disabled author would work as well.
I think there's a good chance we can buddy read one a month depending on who else joins the team. The New Year's resolution one for this month maybe?

Maybe if I ask Diane really nicely 馃槀 she knows she wants to.

Also, just checking, all my 10 books need to be Contemporary to count for points? Sad to say, a book published in the 1960s is no longer Contemporary, so I'll have to change one of my picks if that's the case.

If an LGBTQA author counts as underrepresented that could be great for us . I will try to clarify with Ashley after Christmas. Sam
Burns appears on my TBR a lot but you can't always trust a male name means a male and thetefore LGBT author, so we need to be doing our research.

Cole McCade would definitely count.
If lgbt author counts then
/topic/show/...
has a list.
Since I haven't had much time to read, I've been finding books for the categories, just in case.
Jessica's pick End of the Line looks good. I like the author. And it's KU. It might be a good choice to buddy read for January, for some extra points.

Cole McCade would definitely count.

Or maybe this is a can of worms we don't want to be opened! I had a look at the two sites listed & I have to say I agree with Moderator Shaz - shut the discussion down, as mostly it isn't helpful. Maybe the whole idea of diversity is not a particularly good one. That it's devisive rather than encouraging. I really don't care who is writing, only that they tell a good story & do that to the best of their ability.
I would be happy to read End of the Line, too. YA is not my thing generally but the blurb looked interesting.

The problem was that a book I picked written by Christopher Isherwood was published in the early 60s. That's Contemporary to me, who was born in the 50s. However, when I checked the MPG the Contemporary tag was sadly lacking. Anyone adding the book over the last 20 years in GR wouldn't consider it a contemporary read because of course, it isn't. Quote from Leo, age 12, "In the olden days Granny, when you were my age......"

Cole McCade would definitely count.
If lgbt author counts then

I agree. I love that were encouraging people to read books by authors with different backgrounds and life experiences but the term 'under-represented' is too vague.
I think 'translated from another language' is enough. My children's grandparents are Chinese immigrants so I want to read some books by Chinese authors this year to familiarise myself more with the culture and history. I might make it a challenge to add one Chinese book a month.

I need the new year challenges to start.
I'm in a reading slump without them.
And as much as I liked reading some old urban fantasy series that I had missed out on years ago, I'm ready to get back to my normal reading.

Cole McCade would definitely count.
If lgbt author counts then
/topic/show/......"
I don't normally pay much attention to any author details, unless I'm forced to find out for a challenge. Author from Australia, tends to be the one that pops up most often.
I only start to really recognize the name of an author if I'm read several books by them.
Unless the author is of a long series that I follow, I'm hard pressed to tell you the name of the author I'm currently reading without looking it up.

Now we have the team locked, I wonder if we should do some brief introductions?
Ariel I'd love to know what you like to read. You've joined a team of MM readers but maybe we can convert you for some buddy reading 馃き or I'm happy to read some MF for a change.

I mostly read MM romance and will read any sub-genre, but my big love is Fantasy and all enemies-to-lovers I can get my hands on.
When I'm not reading I'm learning Mandarin with my daughter or watching K-dramas
