A Fistful of Collars is the fifth book featuring everyone’s favorite detective team, canine narrator Chet and his human partner, Private Investigator Bernie Little. Bernie and Chet have been hired by the mayor’s office to keep an eye on actor, Thad Perry, while he’s in town filming a movie. Bernie’s been told Thad has a connection to the area and when he looks into it, homicides begin to happen. Fans won't be worried; Bernie and Chet are on the job and soon "the perps" will be collared.
As always, the actual mystery is secondary to Chet and his interactions with Bernie. Chet's thoughts and just how they flit from one thing to the next, but always staying right in focus with Bernie, demonstrate his utter devotion. I always enjoy hearing Chet's take on our human quirks.
Both Chet and Bernie are very likeable characters, and while the mystery may not be the most complex, the characters are well drawn and time spent with them is very enjoyable. Dog lovers will love this book as they follow Chet's thoughts (which are so easily derailed by a treat). Despite Quinn limiting himself to only Chet’s observations, half understood sentences, and charming random associations, the story unfolds smoothly.
The best way to enjoy this series is with an audio version narrated by Jim Frangione. I can't imagine anyone else as the voice of Chet. If you have ever been certain your dog understands what you’re saying, read this series.
