Memorial Day is observed on the 26th of May. It was once known as Decoration Day. It commemorates all men & women who have died in military service for the United States. Many people visit cemeteries and memorials on Memorial Day.
It is traditionally seen as the start of the summer season and as such is a state public holiday. It has become less a day of remembrance and more of a day of family gatherings and cultural events. Families hold picnics and go to sporting events.
