Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I think I have this right. I have had Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child on my TBR for a long time (In fact, I have had it on the last two seasonal challenges, but have not gotten to it either time) and Lincoln Child co-authors books with Douglas Preston, who wrote the book Blasphemy, which my son has been bugging me to read. So my two books are :

Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child
AND
Blasphemy by Douglas Preston

By the way Tanja - great task. I might see if I can come up with a more obscure connection, but the above is my first go at it.

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Petra - I'm gonna pass on the publishing company connection since that is like the list, reviews, newsletteres bit. Now if they share the same editor, that's acceptable!

message 53: by Petra (new)

Petra Got it! I'll try again. I really do like this task and will get the hang of it.

message 54: by Kate (new)

Kate (kathrynlouwca) | 1002 comments Just to make sure I got this right, this is what I was thinking... Book A: The Eyes of the Dragon by Stephen King, who wrote a review (blurb on the book) of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (which is Book B)

message 55: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Fiona - Hmm. Roberta Kray to a movie about the Krays with Martin & Gary Kemp. But where to go from there. Let me think about that.

message 56: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Tanja wrote: "Fiona - Hmm. Roberta Kray to a movie about the Krays with Martin & Gary Kemp. But where to go from there. Let me think about that."

Tanja, Martin Kemp played Steve Owen in Eastenders and both Kemp brothers are/were in Spandau Ballet if that helps x

message 57: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Okay! Tell me if this works (and if it does, it means all kinds of awesomeness):

Hate That Cat: A Novel was written by Sharon Creech, who also wrote the prequel, Love That Dog.

Love That Dog mentions Walter Dean Myers, and also includes poems by him in the book, which would require some sort of contact between the two so they could make sure it was okay to include the poems.

Walter Dean Myers wrote Monster, which was reviewed by a lady named Ellen on GR (http://www.goodreads.com/ellennancy)

Ellen also reviewed After by Amy Efaw, the book I'd like to use for part B.

message 58: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Diane - Matar & Coetzee are approved!

Sandra - You do not have to read the co-authored book. Just cite that they co-authored a book. And your other example of being interviewed at the same time is accepted as well!

Katie - Thanks Katie for the Daily Show connection! That'll help!! And glad you're having fun!

Jamie - For the Oprah Book Club ones, just verify that the author appeared on the show. I don't watch Oprah so no idea if every pick of hers has the author! The connection here is Oprah. Just as Katie pointed out for The Daily Show (Jon Stewart).

Fiona - Try checking out the non-fiction True Crime section. There might be a book on the night club Katie pointed out or about the Kray Bros (crime bosses)!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments I really am lost!

message 60: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Lyn M - Approved! Glad you were able to use the book that's sat on your TBR for a while!!

Kathryn - Great! Usually authors meet/email/chat w/another when they review (or I am giving 'em the benefit of the doubt!)

Ms Anderson - I'm going to go no at Ellen. If Ellen was a fellow author, I might have. But Ellen seems to be a GR reader which basically then creates another list like newsletters. You were great up to Walter Dean Myers. I'm still certain you'll find a way to connect to After!!

message 61: by Petra (new)

Petra Okay....next attempt:

1. Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

a) the novel is set in Highgate Cemetery, London.
b) Highgate Cemetery is the inspiration of the setting for Neil Gaiman鈥檚 The Graveyard Book (Wikipedia: Highgate Cemetery)

2. a Neil Gaiman novel (yet to be determined, if this connection works).

There are many famous interments in Highgate Cemetery that would work well (Charles Dickens' parents and a brother are buried there, for example) and the Cemetery is used as a setting for parts of some Novels (Mansfield Park, for example). It's actually a really interesting place.

message 62: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Okay, scratch Ellen completely out of the equation. Amy Efaw herself read and gave stars to Walter Dean Myers' Monster.

So, After -> Monster -> Love That Dog -> Hate That Cat

message 63: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Ms Anderson - Approved!

Petra - Not approved. I need a person to connect them not a location per se. What made Michele's different is that Bill Bass owned/created the body farm which was the inspiration for Patricia Cornwell's "The Body Farm".

message 64: by Katie (new)

Katie | 1 comments Hi Tanja,

I found a way to link two of my TBR books and I want to run it past you:

A. A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams
B. Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

Streetcar was made into a film with Marlon Brando who also starred in The Godfather, which was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. Coppola produced the 1994 film version of Shelley's Frankenstein.

Does that work?

message 65: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Katie - Excellent!

message 66: by Megan (new)

Megan Anderson (ms_anderson) | 1464 comments Yay~! *dances*

Tanja, it might be helpful for everyone who's having trouble to post a list of what you can/can't do very early on in this thread (on your first post here, for example). That way people just joining in don't need to look through all the posts to find the rules, and they can check their ideas against that list.

message 67: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Tanja, can I read 1 of the Kray twins autobiography for the end book (part B)?

message 68: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Sarah - Here's an example based on your TBR list.

The Da Vinci Code became a movie directed by Ron Howard. He starred in a movie called American Graffiti, directed by George Lucas. George Lucas directed Star Wars. He authorized Timothy Zahn to write Star Wars books. At this point, you can read any book by Timothy Zahn.

message 69: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Fiona - Certainly on the autobiography! That's a great connection!

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments Tanja - I chose the book The Sacrifice to read by Robert Whitlow. He won a Christie award so could I read another book that won a Christie award? I really want to try to do this one myself since I now see how it works. I just wanted to know if I have to go farther in seperations.

message 71: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Sarah, the connection would have to be for the same award for the same year and same category. In this case, Philip Gulley's Home to Harmony tied with Robert Whitlow's The Sacrifice for the same category (Contemporary Fiction) the same year (2001) for the same award (Christie). The other nominees were The Book of Hours
by T. Davis Bunn and Bookends by Liz Curtis Higgs. So either of those two would work, too.

message 72: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) So it will go:

Roberta Kray's novel to Reggie or Ronnie Kray bio.

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) | 458 comments What about if two authors live in the same state?

message 74: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Sarah - Nope on living in the same state. Need to have a person-type connection or a very very well defined non-person (subject to approval).

message 75: by Sandie (new)

Sandie (chocdrop) | 212 comments I love this task. I could easily make some 1 degree connections, but what's the fun in that!

Is this OK?

1) The Information Officer by Mark Mills

His first screenplay starred James Purefoy, who was in A Knight's Tale with Heath Ledger, who starred in Brokeback Mountain, directed by Ang Lee. Ang Lee directed Sense & Sensibility with a screenplay written by Emma Thompson, who starred in Peter's Friends with Stephen Fry.

2) Moab is my Washpot by Stephen Fry

Mills - Purefoy - Ledger - Lee - Thompson - Fry

message 76: by Fiona (Titch) (last edited Feb 22, 2010 12:48PM) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Part A: Roberta Kray married Reggie Kray, who has a twin brother Ronnie Kray. The Krays had a film done about them that starred Martin & Gary Kemp. The Kemp brothers are in a band called Spandau Ballet and Martin Kemp starred in Eastenders which also stars Barbara Windsor who was a member @ the Krays Nightclub. So I will read 1 of their Bios for part B.

Hope thats how we are thinking to do it.

message 77: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Fiona - Yup! That's exactly it. But I thought Roberta married Reggie Kray? Still it works :P

Sandie - NICE ONE! You could have turned at Ang Lee directing S&S and read a book by Jane Austin!

I intended to stop at Brokeback Mountain and read a book by Annie Proulx, but this is incredibly addictive and I had to see how far I could take it!

Yes, ur correct. Changed the names lol (duh, seen film a few times as well)

message 81: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments A lot of people here astound me with their author knowledge! I've yet to figure out what I'm submitting. Toying with the idea of using Wil Wheaton for the author in Part A.

Just as a title, this one is HILARIOUS:

24 Years of Housework...and the Place Is Still a Mess: My Life in Politics - Patricia Schroeder, D-CO. Andrews McMeel Publishing, 1998.

message 84: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments That's hilarious, Ashley! The title alone!

message 85: by Bridgit (new)

Bridgit | 505 comments OK - Think I got something here that actually links two books on my TBR:

Book 1: Milan Kundera - Unbearable Lightness of Being
Book 2: Phillip Pullman - Subtle Knife

OK - Unbearable Lightness of Being was made into a movie by director Phillip Kaufman. Kaufman also directed Rising Sun by Michael Crichton, who also wrote Sphere, which starred Dustin Hoffman in the movie. Dustin Hoffman starred in Billy Bathgate with Nicole Kidman, who starred in The Golden Compass, Phililp Pullman's first book in the His Dark Material's Trilogy.

So that makes it Kundera - Kaufman - Crichton - Hoffman - Kidman - Pullman

Whoo!

and a similiar link for "The Colbert Report"

message 88: by Ashley FL (last edited Feb 22, 2010 01:15PM) (new)

Ashley FL | 721 comments OK, I'm probably not going to use this, but once you hit Jon Stewart, and find out the Mo Rocca is on his show, you can get from (apparently) neo-conservative writer's post-apocolit to Judy Blume:

鈥淥ne Second After鈥 by William R. Forstchen, who co-authored books with Newt Gingrich, who appeared on 鈥淭he Daily Show鈥 with Jon Stewart, where Mo Rocca is a contributor, who is also a contributor at 鈥淲ait, Wait, Don鈥檛 Tell Me鈥, where another contributor is Charlie Pierce who is President of the Writer鈥檚 Guild, whose Vice-President is Judy Blume.

BWAH!!!!

message 90: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments You could read Colbert's book, then follow a trail of one of his guests! For those caught up in Olympic Fever, remember Colbert sponsored the men's speed skating!

message 91: by Usako (new)

Usako (bbmeltdown) | 1256 comments Bridgit - Oooh that's great to tie to His Dark Materials! Approved!

Cait - Thanks for the info! That'll definitely work for Petra to link Niffenegger and Gaiman!

Now I wonder which author is the "Kevin Bacon"

Cait (caitertot) | 648 comments Here are some more random connections

David Foster Wallace was at one time in a relationship with Mary Karr.

Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen, and Zadie Smith were all speakers at Foster Wallace's memorial service at NYU.

Foster Wallace also wrote an extensive blurb on the back of A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers.

Dave Eggers is married to Vendela Vida.

John Irving was a close friend and one time student of Kurt Vonnegut at the University of Iowa Writers Workshop.

Here is a list of Iowa's Writers Workshop alumni and faculty - it's quite extensive:

message 95: by Petra (new)

Petra How about:

1. Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

Audrey and Neil Gaiman met, as per her response to a Question posed on The Next Best Book Club here on 老虎机稳赢方法 when it featured a Q&A Session with Audrey:

"Q: Neil Gaiman thanked you in The Graveyard Book. How did the two of you meet? Are you two working on a secret project together?"

A: I first met Neil at a literary festival in Sydney. He's quite lovely to talk to, and we have some interests in common (such as graveyards and comics). Neil and our mutual friend Hayley Campbell came to Highgate Cemetery and took my tour as he was just finishing The Graveyard Book; he was looking for a few final details, but he had been familiar with the cemetery for years."

2. Read a Neil Gaiman novel
