Julia (taspsandiego) | 24 comments I have two authors to blame really. Agatha Christie when I was six and JK Rowling when I was eight. I guess HP is really to blame for many young adults - today - developing the habit as children.

Cindy (Squin) For me it was The Boxcar Children series when I was in 3-5th grades. I owned almost all of them (around 80 I think in the series when I outgrew them.) I look back now and the stories, while good, are hilariously ridiculous. But, they really got me into reading!

Rarietty | 61 comments Books by Beverly Cleary. I started reading them when I was 6 and they were the first "novels" I ever read. I was addicted to them, particularly the Ramona books. I owned most of her books and often reread them. I LOVED them.

I also loved Roald Dahl. My favorites by him were Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Matilda.

Bri (rowan13) | 22 comments Eden wrote: "There were two books that really hooked me onto reading. It was The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton and Slam! by Walter Dean Myers."

The Outsiders is an awesome book, that would've hooked me too if I'd found it earlier!

For me it semi-started with the Silverwing books by Kenneth Oppel, then I became a complete book nerd (much!) thanks to Harry Potter!

message 35: by Marley (new)

Marley | 2 comments The book that made me start reading more was So B. It by Sarah Weeks by Sarah Weeks

message 36: by Lori (new)

Lori (loribogenreif) | 16 comments My mom has pictures of me "reading" Dr. Seuss books when I was three years old, although I am sure memorization is a more appropriate word for it. I do recall going through a phase in which I tried to make rhymes out of everything I said, so the good Dr. certainly had a profound influence on me even at such a young age.

message 37: by Laurie (new)

Laurie For me, it wasn't really a book or even a series of books, it was my Mom. She always said that I could have anything I wanted just so long as it was a book. I did read the Nancy Drew and the Three Investigators non stop as a preteen, though.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

Mine was Mr Pinkwhistle, by Enid Blyton. I read it when I was 7.

message 39: by [deleted user] (new)

I have always been a reader---but the book that made me fall in love with teen reads is Beautiful Creatures.
Since last October, I have bought around 100 teen reads and greedily devoured all of them.

message 40: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (sandylivvy4) | 25 comments The BFG this hooked me in as did
Enid Blyton

message 41: by Sille (new)

Sille (sssiiillleee) Harry Potter. :D (How I wish I could write something more original here... but then again, this shows that HP really is something really special.)

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

I have read Harry Potter but it was not the book that made me a reader. i became a reader when I was older not when I was a kid. So the book that made me a reader was Fax Me a Bagel by Sharon Kahn which is part of the Ruby a Rabbi's Wife mystery series. It's kind of embarrassing but before I discovered this series, I thought Harry Potter was the only series that existed.

message 43: by Debra (new)

Debra | 2 comments The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck.

message 44: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I honestly don't remember what book made me a reader. When I was young my mum used to read to me and when I was old enough to read, I was reading anything from kids' books to YA novels. I definitely remember reading sci-fi novels when I was around 10. I think it was Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass that made me turn to the fantasy genre but I can't remember what book turned to me a reader per se.

☼M²¹°ù¾±²¹²Ô☼ (mgdc) | 233 comments What really got me started is this The Guinness Book of Records 1994 (Guinness World Records) by Guinness World Records
Then Archie comics, Sweet Valley, Goosebumps, Fearstreet, Nancy Drew, Choose Your Own Adventure..

Soul (soulkeeper720) | 3773 comments Mod
if u hadn't mentioned it i would have never guessed that some one could be so moved to become 'A Reader' after reading 'The Guinness book of records'

and that is a record in it self..

☼M²¹°ù¾±²¹²Ô☼ (mgdc) | 233 comments hehehe..I loved it. Ihat Guinness came with the encyclopedia. Back then I was intrigued with the worlds weirdness, say, the longest beard, nail or whatnots...I was even hoping I can someday be listed. But of course, as I grew older, I realized how stupid I would look having the longest fingernails.

message 49: by Jackie (new)

Jackie The first actual book I read, without having to be forced, was Virginia Andrew's Flowers in the Attic. After that I never looked back.
It's funny actually, now I don't even really enjoy Virginia Andrews, I haven't read any of her books in years.
But back then (I think I was about 14)that was the best story I had ever read, I still have the complete series somewhere.

After that Dean Koontz, David Morrel & Sidney Sheldon kept me busy for a while. I had a lot to catch up on... they had a lot of books that was alread out when I was that age.
