message 16: by Stacia (new)

Stacia | 8 comments Holy Fools by Joanne Harris
Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger

Both also charity shop buys.

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Stacia wrote: "Holy Fools by Joanne Harris

I read Her Fearful Symmetry a couple of years ago, but didn't like it at all. It's very gothic and I found it a bit disturbing!

It's probably the case that I just don't like Audrey Niffenegger's writing as I couldn't get on with The Time Traveller's Wife either.

I've read a few of Joanne Harris's novels, and have to say that Chocolat is definitely my favourite.

I enjoyed The Time Traveller's Wife and bought Her Fearful Symmetry as a result but haven't got round to reading it yet!

The last book I bought Fear by Michael Grant

message 19: by Linda (new)

Linda David (lindzz) I am so mad with myself! I knelt on my Kindle last night and broke it! It was hidden beneath my bedcovers and I didn't realise it was there - just heard a crunch and the screen's just a complete mess!

Went out this morning to buy a Kindle Touch, and it wasn't available from Argos! I need to know how David Copperfield ends! :(

Oh no :( - that's one of my big fears about my kindle that either I'll break it or the children will. Was it still under guarantee? Have you tried ringing Amazon? They might be able to send you another one?

message 21: by Linda (new)

Linda David (lindzz) That's been suggested, but I feel kind of silly since it was my own fault. = /

I know what you mean about Time Travellers Wife, I nearly gave up on it a few times but once I got just over half way through, I couldn't put it down so it will be interesting to see how Her Fearful Symmetry compares.

Linda, how frustrating, I hope you get it fixed or replaced soon!

message 23: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Oh no Linda! Apparently they're very good about replacing them, worth a try? :D

message 24: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) I have read somewhere, probably on MN :), that it doesn't matter whether you bought your kindle from them, Tesco, Argos or wherever else you can buy them, that they will still replace faulty/broken ones because they know it pays to keep you as one of their customers!

Maura | 3 comments Amazon will replace any broken Kindle;s if that is where you bought it.
Also girls do you not use Awesomebooks.com loads of second hand books for 2.49 each and if you buy two you get free postage i get so many on there. I hate paying those huge prices for new books as i read so much.I find a very limited choice lately for the kindle so i have not been using it.

Got three for £2.00 in the charity shop; The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel by Deborah Moggach , The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold and Salem Falls by Jodi Picoult

message 28: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (viciouslittlething) Couldn't resist a bargain at a car boot sale . 50p a book so had 8 of them. DH wasn't paying attention so managed to buy and stash them without him noticing. One book I've been looking out for Ash by Malinda Lo the others are YA i have not come across before.

message 29: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Ooo I added that Ash to my to read list last year, will be looking to see what you think of it!

message 30: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (viciouslittlething) Jen, if you want it PM me your address and I'll send it your way. Not a keeper but it was an interesting fairytale retelling, though didn't enjoy it as much as McKinley's retellings.

I went to the book shop in clarkes village and came home with three for a fiver.

The Maze Runner by James Dashner
The Death Cure also by James Dashner

Wither by DeStefano

I've read the Maze Runner but DH can't remember it. I swapped and got Scorch Trials a couple of weeks ago, so now feel set up. The last book was just to make it up to a fiver.

message 31: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Oh thank you so much, I will do just that!

I thought Wither was brilliant!

message 32: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Today I got a lovely, almost new, hardback copy of The Night Watch by Sarah Waters by Sarah Waters for 5p :) Not saying where from, or there won't be any books left next time I go!!!

message 33: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod

Any one as daft as me? I bought The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh and The Book Thief by Markus Zusak even though I've got them on my kindle :X

message 35: by Luci (new)

Luci (elkiedee) | 4 comments Jen, not that way round, though I do sometimes buy things for my Kindle that I own in print, though usually if they're cheap and with a view to getting rid of the hard copy. There are some books that I have both and will probably keep the hard copy. I also have a lot of my books stored where I can't find them, particularly in the shed, and I'm a bit worried that they're not going to be in readable condition when I do find them, and I sometimes borrow books from the library or buy charity shop copies of books I can't find.

Have you read those two books?

message 36: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
I have read them both this year in fact, but I thoroughly enjoyed them and wanted hard copes

message 37: by Tasha (new)

To add to my massive pile of unread books!!

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Found myself in the charity shop again argh!

And I cannot even remember what I bought (they're still in the car) will edit this later.

If I don't remember what they were it obviously means I didn't need them ...

message 40: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
They're still in the car but I remembered one is the sequel sort of thing to Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth.

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Jen wrote: "They're still in the car but I remembered one is the sequel sort of thing to Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth."

I've just bought myself the boxset of series one as a Christmas present to myself. I missed it first time round on tv, and then messed up trying to record the repeats - missed episode 1, found it on i-player and then forgot to record the rest of the series. Hopeless!!!

message 42: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
Did you read the book? Well worth a go. The series was fantastic, especially the character that Miranda Hart played!

message 43: by Bobbi Jo (new)

Bobbi Jo (moon_petal) | 34 comments The last book that I bought was Insurgent by Veronica Roth.

I've got it in my tbr pile. Everyone says how fantastic the series was, and I missed it! My MIL is a big fan of the series, as my SIL. They've both read all Jennifer Worth's books, so I've got quite a bit of catching up to do!!

message 45: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Just bought The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Kay Penman by Sharon Kay Penman - kindle price 89p at the moment. Excellent value for way over 1000 pages of historical novel.

It might spur me on finally to get round to reading Wolf Hall (Wolf Hall, #1) by Hilary Mantel too. I started it ages ago but got distracted and gave up.

message 46: by Chantal (new)

Chantal (chantal77) | 151 comments Mod
I love The Sunne in Splendour Elizabeth. I learnt so much about the Wars of The Roses, although you don't feel like you're learning as it's such an enjoyable read :)

Just got: A Dance with Dragons: After the Feast.

Why don't my pictures work? *sob*

message 48: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth (merelyreading) Has anyone else bought much in the 12 days of Kindle sale? I've looked every day and the selection doesn't seem anywhere near as good as last year's books.

I bought a couple of books, and David Mitchell's autobiography from yesterday's Daily Deal. I quite like his sharp ascerbic humour, although it can be a little too cruel at times!

message 49: by Jen (new)

Jen (jefnerf) | 369 comments Mod
I only got The Snow Child and The Life of Pi, I keep looking though!

message 50: by Nicola (new)
