I was absolutely obsessed with the graphic audio version of Onyx Storm. Everything was that much more engrossing, provoked emotions and made it that much more engaging for me as reader/listener. The only thing that disappoints me with this is that I have to wait for long for Part 2, I really wish they were released at the same time. ]]>

Blood and Steel (Book One – The Legends of Thezmarr) - Helen Scheuerer

This audio book has been on my TBR list for a little while, so I was excited when my library finally had a copy available.

Helen Scheuerer is a fantasy author who has written series such as The Oremere Chronicles and The Legends of Thezmarr. Helen resides in New Zealand near the mountains where she can dream of new stories and pursue her love of creative writing.

Althea has had one dream for years and only one dream, to become a war sword of Thezmarr. Except that in Thezmarr no girls or women are allowed to hold a blade as there was a prophecy that foretold the demise of Thezmarr at the hands of a female with a blade.

But Althea is on a time frame, determined to achieve her goal before she turns 27 years old, the day it has been foretold she will die.

So, Althea spends her time spying on the men and boys as they are trained to wield blades and practices in secret.

Yet, despite the odds that are stacked against her, she is given the chance to possible achieve her dreams, she is allowed to train as a shield, train with a weapon, a blade – the first woman in many years who has been allowed to do so.

It is not an easy task and Althea has to fight to prover herself at every step, against her peers and against those who are meant to train and mentor her. Easier said than done when her very mentor, the legendary Wilder Hawthorne, is growing more of a distraction day by day.

Althea must fight for her place among the men , prove she has the right to learn to wield weapons, figure out whatever this is growing between her and Hawthorne’ and now is caught up in the safety and wellbeing of the people of Thezmarr. For there is a growing darkness descended on the lands, a darkness borne of the terrors of old, terrors that grew the fear of women wielding weapons.

Will Althea have a chance of achieving her dreams or will the foretelling of her death prove to be false...

“Blood and Steel” was a fantasy story like one I have not read in such a long time, brought me back to my first days of reading fantasy; essentially reminded me of why I loved reading it and what a good fantasy book was. The themes of the book were really reminiscent of the first fantasy series I read when I was in school – Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce. A stubborn female who wouldn’t let the restrictions society placed on her stop her from achieve her dreams; an enemies to lovers' attraction, great world building and a bloody good story. Now I feel it is important to note I listened to the audio book version of this story and did not read a physical copy, while the voice actors were okay I feel this is a story that would highly benefit from a graphic audio book adaptation as I feel certain things in this story may have been conveyed better with that touch to it. Regardless I loved the story and am eagerly awaiting the next instalment to become available through my library. ]]>
