Okay so she just killed someone by accident. And Cross’s solution to barge into her room, oggle her “brawless breasts” (dafuq? Was this written by a man?) then proceed to strip her and initiate shmex because he can “make (her) forget” ????🤮🤮🤮 ]]>

Here I am, giving this author yet another chance.

This was an improvement—by degrees—from her dragon shifter why choose series. However, Hale’s lowkey hated for woman (every other female character is a bitchy mean girl who’s jealous of the FMC) remains prominent in this series, too.

It reads like this author has never known healthy female friendship and is straight-up self-interesting as the main character drowning in male attention 🫠🫠🫠 ]]>

If you'd rather listen to this review instead of reading it,

I fear we've gone off-piste when the only thing holding this book together is the used-to-be-tabloid-fodder, 80-something recluse's storyline.

Zero chemistry between the two main characters. ZERO.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I'd say this about an EmHen novel but here we are: I have no clue why these characters fall for one another.

In one of my reading updates I mentioned that I could tell you no more than a handful of things about the MMC, Hayden. Later in the novel, the FMC, Alice, lists out the things she knows (and loves?) about him... Those lists were IDENTICAL. I kid you not.

I haven't read or seen anyone else's reviews (I do that on purpose to ensure my thoughts are my own). I would be shocked if the majority of them don't mention The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. Right from the start, I was alarmed with how closely Henry's narrative mirrors Jenkins Reid. That isn't to say Jenkins Reid was the first and only author to ever pen a story like this. What I am saying is that it certainly was ✨a choice✨ for one of the biggest names in the genre today to get as close as she did to a book that spent 91 weeks on the NYT's bestseller list and sold 1.5 million copies.

I dunno. Maybe it's just me who finds that odd. Or that it veers into *yikes* territory. Especially with the 'twist' at the end, which I'm assuming most people saw coming a mile away.

It's so unlike Henry's other work, which brims with huge, messy, emotions and strong ties between all the characters, that it's almost as if Great Big Beautiful Life was ghostwritten by someone else.

I am not speculating and I am NOT accusing EmHen to have done this. Let me be veryyyy clear!

Key takeaway: I'd pass on this one

Notes on the audio
Julia Whelan is in stellar form, as usual. Even she couldn't help this unoriginal story sparkle.
