Demoting to a 1-star. I was so incensed with the ending and the insensitive way they talked about the character of Marina that I was trying to be gracious by only knocking 1 star off what might've been a 3-star book. But then I thought about it more and realized I didn't really like the rest of the book either. On the one hand, Bridgertons is the same, so you can't really fault it for being formulaic (they have to marry hastily because of some perceived impropriety? gasp) but my main issue is with Phillip. I was so hype at the beginning for a guy who wasn't a "rake" and was instead lonely and awkward (the part where he's like "Didn't she realize it took him hours to write each of his letters?" was particularly endearing) and loves his plants. The awkward dad angle was charming also. But it just felt like he was a different character in each scene. People are multifaceted but he went from being awkward to being yelly to being snarky and none of it felt cohesive. So yeah, not a fan of this Bridgertons installment in particular.
