Anny in Love, by Colorado writer Barbara Wright, roots its “what-ifs” in facts. This historical fiction has been spun from the particulars of a giant in English literature, William Thackeray (Vanity Fair), who doesn’t appear in the work at all. The novel captures the feel of later 1800s as elder daughter, Anny, the “not pretty one,” supports sister Minny and her husband through their union, the challenge of a mentally deficient child, and Minny’s death. Throughout this time, Anny was in love with her sister’s husband. She finally meets her romantic match, years younger, without surrendering to the dictates of her society. Wright successfully sidesteps the temptation to turn the plot into a melodrama to concentrate on the facts of their lives, which had challenges a-plenty. ]]>
