"Kate has a unique gift where she can see the future, but it happens only during her asthma attacks. When Kate sees visions of Desi’s sister and her own, she must try to do everything she can to save them both. She works with her crush Desi, the one person who believes in her visions, to better understand how she can trigger her visions without risking her health. The writing style was captivating, and I ended up finishing the book in one day. I enjoyed the psychic elements that were woven into the story. The characters were developed well, but I wish we got some perspective from the other characters too since they seemed to be at the center of Kate’s life. "

Visions by Cheryl Rainfield
"Is having a psychic power worth it if it kills you? This is something that plagues Kate Robbins in her daily life as she suffers from chronic asthma. But, each life-threatening asthma attack comes with a premonition of something potentially dangerous happening to someone she knows. All Kate wants is to live a normal life without asthma attacks and premonitions nobody believes — even her own family. Then one day someone believes her, Desi, the sibling of the girl Kate ends up having a premonition about and this completely changes Kate’s perspective on her life and powers.

I found this to be an interesting read with amazing queer characters along with a main character with a chronic illness. I loved Kate's representation of people dealing with something so severe in their daily lives while wanting to live like everyone else. It showed me how I take my ease of breathing for granted. I also love the Latinx representation we get from Desi and their family, especially their grandmother. Desi really helped drive this story for me and they were definitely my favorite character. I get why Kate immediately likes them so much.

Without Desi, this book would’ve been a bit sad and full-on Debbie Downer as that was the vibe Kate gives off until she starts working with Desi to stop her premonition from happening. Honestly, it took me a little bit to enjoy Kate’s character at first but I saw her character grow a lot over the course of the book and I really liked the person she grew into. I’d definitely read more books with her and Desi tackling her future premonitions together. A fair warning is given by the author that a lot of these premonitions include traumatic events including sexual abuse and physical abuse. So, be prepared for that kind of content to pop up when you read this book. I do thank the author for that forewarning at the beginning of the book though.

Although this book includes fantastical elements like psychic powers it has a bigger focus on relationships. Love, partnerships, friendships and familial relationships are a huge part of this story and I found a lot of the relationship struggles relatable. There was a lot of realism accompanying the fantastical pieces to a point I’d say this book hits on magical realism in a way famous authors like Gabriel Garcia Marquez did and this book does it well. I loved seeing the struggle of the relationships between characters, especially between Kate and her family. It was interesting to see how others that help care for the person with the chronic illness are affected by it. We see this in Kate and her mother and I loved how the author explored this relationship between mother and daughter.

Overall, I found this to be a great book even if it took me a few chapters to really get into the flow of it. I believe Kate and her story needed a bit of set up but it dragged a little for me in the beginning. Once she teamed up with Desi though the story really kicked off for me. As I said earlier, I’d definitely read more stories with Kate and Desi. They make a fantastic team. "
