This is the third book by Vila-Matas that I鈥檝e read, and is my favorite of those three; it is more difficult than 鈥淏artleby and Co.鈥 and 鈥淎 Brief History of Portable Literature,鈥 and more satisfying. Humor and philosophical terror coexist from line to line in this book, which begins as a story about writers block and ends somewhere within a fabric of several nested surreal dreamlike accounts, some of which seem to be rooted in real experience 鈥 b

I got this from the McNally Jackson table at NYU, at the reading the night before the National Book Awards. I think it鈥檚 the first Syrian book I鈥檝e read. It鈥檚 rich fare 鈥 a young man in a militia bleeds to death on a mountainside and contemplates his life 鈥 and very, very good.
