This is the third book by Vila-Matas that I鈥檝e read, and is my favorite of those three; it is more difficult than 鈥淏artleby and Co.鈥 and 鈥淎 Brief History of Portable Literature,鈥 and more satisfying. I got this from the McNally Jackson table at NYU, at the reading the night before the National Book Awards. I think it鈥檚 the first Syrian book I鈥檝e read. It鈥檚 rich fare 鈥 a young man in a militia bleeds to death on a mountainside and contemplates his life 鈥 and very, very good. The human cost of war is not a new theme, but its horrors mutate as material conditions change 鈥 even if the needs of the people afflicted by said conditions don鈥檛 change,
