Thank you, Sam. (smiling at you) Have you read my newest book STAINED? It is the closest of my books to SCARS. Like Kendra, Sarah is a strong girl survivor. In STAINED, Sarah is abducted and must find a way to save herself. And like I did with SCARS, I drew on my own trauma and abuse experience to write it.

Take good care,

I don't really get writer's block. I don't force myself to write every single day. I do write for crazy long periods when I'm writing, and then I take a break--a week or a few weeks or even a month off. And then I write (and edit) like crazy again. I also read a lot; reading helps fill me back up.

I write about what I care about deeply. I write about what I'm passionate about, what moves me, and I think readers can feel that.

I am living my dream. I have a voice now. I reach others the way other authors reached me as a teen. My books help save other teens the way books helped save me. I write about what I care about.

Read as much as you can. Read for the love of it, and read to learn from it. Read writing technique books as well, join a writing critique group, listen to the feedback you get on your writing but always trust your gut. Attend conferences or speeches on writing technique. Study the craft. And if you want to get published, make sure you send your most polished work out, make sure you research the agent or publisher before your query them to make sure they publish the kind of work you write. And don't give up. If getting published is really your dream, don't give up. It took me more than 10 years and hundreds of rejections before I got SCARS published.

I drew on my own life experience to write STAINED, just like I did with SCARS. Like Sarah in STAINED, I know what it's like to be held captive, have my life threatened, be repeatedly raped, be withheld food and water, and have mind control used against me. And, like Sarah, I had to be the one to rescue myself--over and over again--until I actually got safe.
