“Complete destruction,鈥 agreed the inspector. 鈥淎nd all because of some hothead 鈥 appropriate term, we鈥檙e thinking 鈥 getting hysterical and setting fire to just one house in the street.鈥 鈥淎t least it has allayed your reports of vampires,鈥 said Stoker. The inspector snorted. 鈥淰ampires! We knew there was no such thing right from the start.鈥 鈥淎nd yet you were not prepared to enter the house and prove it,鈥 I said.”

“I could understand how such stories of horror can spread, like a wild fire. Such was the nature of rumor. People seemed to love to be frightened especially when, in their heart of hearts, they knew that they were safe. How many truly believed in vampires, I pondered? How many truly believed that they were risking their life by sitting up in the gods to watch a stage performance?”

“Mead Dissolve four pounds of honey in a gallon of water, and add an ounce of hops, half an ounce of root ginger, and the pared rind of two lemons. Boil this for threequarters of an hour, pour it into a cask to the brim, and when it is still lukewarm add an ounce of yeast. Leave the mead to ferment, and when this has ended, put in a quarter of an ounce of isinglass and bung the cask tightly. In six months it should be bottled.”
