Diane Ackerman has been the finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction in addition to many other awards and recognitions for her work, which include the bestsellers The Zookeeper鈥檚 Wife and A Natural History of the Senses.

The Zookeeper鈥檚 Wife, a little known true story of WWII, became a New York Times bestseller, and received the Orion Book Award, which honored it as, "a groundbreaking work of nonfiction." A movie of The Zookeeper鈥檚 Wife, starring Jessica Chastain and Daniel Br眉hl, releases in theaters March 31st, 2017 from Focus Features.

I had the pleasure of attending the author talk and shoeing of the film at ALA in January 2017. I was impressed by the adaptation of the book. I read the book when it first came out and it was a favorite that year. Have you done much reasearch into the recovery of the zoo and the family after the war? It can't have been easy.

Diane Ackerman First of all, I loved attending the ALA screening also! I鈥檝e spent a lot of my life in libraries and I love libraries, especially book mobiles. The bo鈥辞谤别First of all, I loved attending the ALA screening also! I鈥檝e spent a lot of my life in libraries and I love libraries, especially book mobiles. The book mobiles were my Aladdin鈥檚 cave when I was growing up. I am happy to report that I鈥檝e met both of the children who are very much alive and thrilled to be able to celebrate what happened in their family, and to recognize their parents as rescuers. And, the zoo I鈥檝e been to, at a time when most of Warsaw was destroyed and there were very small population left in Warsaw after the war, they rebuilt that zoo right away. The zoo is now a world-class zoo. As a result, the zoo recently turned the villa that the 呕abi艅ski鈥檚 lived in into a museum. They remodelled it to look the way it looked during the war and now it educates people about what happened there. (less)

As a writer myself, I am always curious about other authors' writing schedules? How does your typical 'writing' day shape up?

Diane Ackerman While I was working on The Zookeeper鈥檚 Wife I didn鈥檛 typically have a writing day because I began writing the book right after my late husband had a s鈥辞谤别While I was working on The Zookeeper鈥檚 Wife I didn鈥檛 typically have a writing day because I began writing the book right after my late husband had a stroke, and I was his caregiver. I鈥檓 sure this had something to do with why I was drawn to the story of a caregiver like Antonina. Of course, I was only looking after one person, but she had the responsibility of looking after so many lives. She was my heroine. It also meant that I had to work in attention gulps and in fragments of time. However, if I had children that I was looking after the same thing would be true. So, I would have to find moments during the day when I wasn鈥檛 needed in looking after him where I could then announce, 鈥淚鈥檓 going to Poland,鈥� and I would go down to my study room. In fact, working on the book became my sanctuary during that time and I did that regularly everyday. I would say during each day I worked on the book for around three or four hours, but not consecutively. Whereas, when I鈥檓 normally writing I begin when I get up first thing in the morning and work for five or six hours at a time. (less)
