J.R. Tompkins learned to love nature and landscapes while growing up among the gorges and waterfalls of the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. His literary and cinematic works often contain a strong sense of place.

Traveling over the entire two-thousand-mile-long Oregon Trail, he wrote, produced, and directed one of the first travel-adventure films ever created on digital cinema, Emigrant Road. His second film, 4Corners, featured the incredible mountains, rivers, canyons, and cultures of America鈥檚 Southwest. J.R. hiked up to seven miles a day exploring Europe鈥檚 eight alpine countries to film The Alps, his third feature film. He also composed its orchestral score.

J.R. has presented travel lectures from coast to coast in the US, includi

By that, I mean that I'll explore a desert landscape, or sit under a tree singing with summer birds, or listen eyes-closed to an ethereal soundtrack. It comes to me when I meet it halfway, like meeting a good friend at a coffee house.(less)

The Gardens of Marguerite by J.R. Tompkins As promised, I am pleased to announce that The Gardens of Marguerite is now out in paperback!

At this culmination of effort, I was reminded of Marguerita's own musings in the book:

"It seemed almost sad to cross back over the R铆o Pantano Bridge, Marguerita thought, for it meant they were back in the city. All the planned work was done and damages repaired; yes, a week later than planned, but no Read more of this blog post »

鈥淲ords, when spoken out loud for the sake of performance, are music. They have rhythm, and pitch, and timbre, and volume. These are the properties of music, and music has the ability to find us and move us, and lift us up in ways that literal meaning can't.鈥

The Gardens of Marguerite by J.R. Tompkins
鈥淭here was something magical in his completely uninhibited amusement, something right in his utter abandon. It was a glow within him, as if he were translucent, at play with light itself. She somehow felt a peace with the world she had been missing before. She wondered if this was a glow Savio saw in his daughters. Anton铆to stopped to look for her and sent up a big wave. This is joy, she thought.鈥

“I do so much writing. But so much of it never goes anywhere, never sees any light of day. I suppose that's like gardening in the basement. I don't publish so much of what I write. I just seem to plow it back into the soil of what I write after it, rewriting and rewriting, thinking that somehow it gets better after the fifty-second-time around. I need to learn to abandon my writing. To let go of it. Dispose of it, like tissue.”
J.R. Tompkins

“Writing is a lifelong disease.

Once contracted, the only prescription is to write constantly in whatever form to express your condition, in whatever construction to carry your words beyond you.”
J.R. Tompkins

“What would it be like to feel so attached, so intrinsically bonded, so protective of one鈥檚 own best connection with time and the ages, of generations past and future, of another human life, of their time?”

“She bent and placed a single daisy upon the grave. A simple white daisy. The plainest of flowers, perhaps the purest, Elspeth thought. It had cost next to nothing at all, and perhaps that was the point. She wasn鈥檛 being cheap. She was being symbolic. In her mind, Andrea deserved only the unstained purity of the simplest of daisies, a daisy that was unsoiled by a wealth that couldn鈥檛 find the money to have claimed her soul.”
