Sheilagh Casey That's an intriguing question. It's never clear who initiated the affair, but it could have been either, for purely conjectural reasons. Maurice could have initiated it, knowing from his wife's gossip that Maja struggled with imperfections in her work and wishing to exploit and destroy her; or Maja could have initiated it for a wide variety of reasons, not least Maurice's good looks and successful early career.
