Fascinating Fun Facts About....the Golden Gate Bridge
Duration: March 1, 2020 - May 31, 2020

Tasks:

1. The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the one-mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. The structure links the American city of San Francisco, California to Marin County.
馃寜 Read a book with a color word in the title OR with a large body of water on the cover.

2. The bridge's name was first used when the project was initially discussed in 1917 by M.M. O'Shaughnessy, city engineer of San Francisco, and Strauss. The name became official with the passage of the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District Act by the state legislature in 1923, creating a special district to design, build and finance the bridge.
馃寜 Read a book by an author who uses initials OR where a project needs to be financed.

3. An earthquake struck the bridge before it was even completed. In June 1935 an earthquake struck the region as men worked atop the bridge's unfinished south tower.
馃寜 Read a book where an earthquake occurs OR where the author's initials can be found in EARTHQUAKE.

4. A safety net below the bridge saved the lives of 19 men during its construction. During construction, a safety net was suspended under the floor of the bridge, extending 10 feet wider than the bridge鈥檚 width and 15 feet longer than its length. The net proved an invaluable precaution as it saved the lives of 19 men. These men became known as members of the "Half-Way-to-Hell Club."
馃寜 Read a book where a life is saved OR with a bridge on the cover.

5. The bridge's orange color was originally intended just as a primer. The U.S. Navy had lobbied that the bridge be painted in blue and yellow stripes to increase its visibility. But when the steel arrived in San Francisco painted in a burnt red hue as primer, the consulting architect decided the color was both highly visible鈥攁nd more pleasing to the eye. The bridge's color is officially called international orange.
馃寜 Read a book with an orange cover OR where the first letter of each title word can be found in INTERNATIONAL ORANGE (three word minimum).

6. Many 'firsts' were set on the bridge鈥檚 opening day. San Franciscans celebrated the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge with Pedestrian Day on May 27, 1937. As many as 200,000 people crossed the bridge that day. People competed to be the first to run, push a baby stroller, and even roller skate across the Golden Gate Bridge.

The San Francisco Chronicle recorded some of the more outlandish firsts, including the first person to cross the Golden Gate Bridge on stilts. The bridge opened to vehicular traffic the following day.

馃寜 Read a book where a character runs, pushes a baby stroller, roller skates, uses stilts or is living in San Francisco OR with a vehicle on the cover.

7. It cost $0.50鈥攅ach way鈥攖o cross the Golden Gate Bridge in 1937. The initial toll for the bridge was 50 cents each way鈥攔oughly equivalent to an $18.00 roundtrip today鈥攁 hefty price to pay in the midst of the Great Depression. Today, Golden Gate Bridge tolls are collected in one direction only, heading southbound into the city of San Francisco.
馃寜 Read a book where a character crosses a bridge (Give us a sentence and page/Loc#) OR with a 5 or 0 in the number of reviews that books has received (Tell us how many reviews).

8. Fiftieth anniversary crowds made the bridge temporarily flatten. San Francisco celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge on May 24, 1987 with a bridge walk. The bridge began to groan and sway with an estimated 300,000 people packed like sardines onto it. The middle of the bridge sagged seven feet under the unprecedented weight, causing the iconic arch to flatten.

Officials quickly closed the bridge, preventing an additional 600,000 people from crossing. Engineers afterward said that the bridge, which was built to bend, was never in danger of collapsing.

馃寜 Read a book where an anniversary is celebrated OR published in May (of any year).

9. The Golden Gate Bridge鈥檚 fog horns blare different tones. The Golden Gate Bridge鈥檚 fog horns, mounted at the middle and south tower (San Francisco side) of the bridge, may be nearly as iconic as the structure itself. The San Francisco Bay is famously foggy, and the bridge may have a slight influence on directing the flow of the fog as it pushes up and pours down around the Bridge. Each horn emits a different tone at different times to help guide ships safely through dense fog.

During March, the fog horns may be heard for less than half-an-hour a day, though during the summer鈥擲an Francisco鈥檚 foggy season鈥攖hey may blare for five or more hours for days at a time. The two fog horns, on average, sound for an average of 2.5 hours each day throughout the year.

馃寜 Read a book with a scene where fog is a factor (Tell us why) OR whose MC's first name begins with a letter in HORNS.

10. It took 30 years to remove lead-based paint from the bridge. In the 1930s, the Golden Gate Bridge was coated with a primer that was two-thirds (by weight) lead. The architects intended the lead-based paint to protect the steel structure from corrosion, but later learned that lead is harmful to humans and the environment.

A massive cleanup effort to remove all the lead-based paint from the bridge started in 1965 and ended in 1995. Today, a zinc-based primer paint is used instead. The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District calls the zinc a 鈥渟acrificial metal鈥 that protects the steel from rust.

馃寜 Read a book whose location begins with a letter in ZINC OR with a page count with TWO of the following numbers: 0, 1, 3, 5, 6 or 9.

READ: 10/10

鉁旓笍1.
Keeping Company - Tami Hoag 3/9
Keeping Company (Loveswept, No 405; Rainbow Chasers, #2) by Tami Hoag

鉁旓笍2.
The Savior - JR Ward 3/10

鉁旓笍3. An earthquake struck the bridge before it was even completed. In June 1935 an earthquake struck the region as men worked atop the bridge's unfinished south tower.
馃寜 Read a book where an earthquake occurs OR where the author's initials can be found in EARTHQUAKE.
Crown of Death - Keary Taylor 3/4

鉁旓笍4.
The Unforgiven - Patricia MacDonald (heroine is saved from a killer) 3/23

鉁旓笍5.
The Last Necromancer - C.J. Archer 4/30

鉁旓笍6.

Jumping Jude - Lucy Lennox 4/26

鉁旓笍7.
Shadow of the Fox - Julie Kagawa 4/20
(we crossed the arched bridge), p131

鉁旓笍8.

The Outcast - Taran Matharu (pub May 2018) 3/30

鉁旓笍9.

When Sparks Fly - Autumn Dawn (hero is Hyna Blue) 3/26

鉁旓笍10.

Haunted Ground - Erin Hart (Ireland) 3/24

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) | 197 comments Fascinating Fun Facts About....the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate mile-wide (1.6 km) strait connecting San Francisco Bay & Pacific Ocean. The bridge links San Francisco, CA to Marin County.
馃寜 Read a book with a color word in the title.

The bridge's name was first used when the project was initially discussed in 1917 by M.M. O'Shaughnessy, city engineer of San Francisco, and Strauss. The name became official w/ passage of the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District Act by the state legislature in 1923, creating a special district to design, build, finance the bridge.

An earthquake struck the bridge before it was completed. In June 1935 an earthquake struck the region as men worked atop the bridge's unfinished south tower.

A safety net below the bridge saved the lives of 19 men during its construction. During construction, a safety net was suspended under the floor of the bridge, extending 10 feet wider than the bridge鈥檚 width and 15 feet longer than its length. The net proved an invaluable precaution as it saved 19 men. These men became known as members of the "Half-Way-to-Hell Club."

The bridge's orange color was originally intended as primer. The U.S. Navy had lobbied that the bridge be painted in blue and yellow stripes to increase its visibility. But when the steel arrived in San Francisco painted in a burnt red hue as primer, the consulting architect decided the color was both highly visible & more pleasing to the eye. The color is officially called international orange.
鉁擆煂 Read a book with an orange cover.
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone 4/9/20
Many 'firsts' were set on the bridge鈥檚 opening day. San Franciscans celebrated the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge with Pedestrian Day on May 27, 1937. As many as 200,000 people crossed the bridge that day. People competed to be the first to run, push a baby stroller, and even roller skate across the Golden Gate Bridge. The SF Chronicle recorded some of the more outlandish firsts, including the first person to cross the Golden Gate Bridge on stilts. The bridge opened to vehicles the following day.
鉁擆煂 Read a book where a character runs, pushes a baby stroller, roller skates, uses stilts or lives in San Francisco.
The Not-So-Star-Spangled Life of Sunita Sen 4/10/20
The initial toll for the bridge was 50 cents each way鈥攔oughly equivalent to an $18.00 roundtrip today鈥攁 hefty price to pay in the Great Depression. Today, Golden Gate Bridge tolls are collected in one direction only, heading southbound into San Francisco.
鉁擆煂 Read a book with a 5 or 0 in the number of reviews that books has received.
The Raven Boys 4/3/20 (29,503 reviews as of April 2020)
50th anniversary crowds made the bridge temporarily flatten. San Francisco celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge on May 24, 1987 with a bridge walk. The bridge began to groan and sway with ~300,000 people packed like sardines onto it. The middle of the bridge sagged seven feet under the unprecedented weight, causing the arch to flatten. Officials closed the bridge, preventing an additional 600,000 people from crossing. Engineers afterward said that the bridge, built to bend, was never in danger of collapsing.
馃寜 Read a book published in May (of any year).
When It Happens 3/21/20 (originally pub. May 2006)
The Golden Gate Bridge鈥檚 fog horns blare different tones. The Golden Gate Bridge鈥檚 fog horns at the middle and south tower (SF side) of the bridge, may be nearly as iconic as the structure itself. The SF Bay is famously foggy, and the bridge may have a slight influence on directing the flow of the fog as it pushes up and pours down around the Bridge. Each horn emits a different tone at different times to help guide ships safely through dense fog. During March, the fog horns may be heard for less than half-an-hour a day, though during the summer foggy season, they may blare for 5+ hours for days at a time. The two fog horns, on average, sound for an average of 2.5 hours each day throughout the year.
馃寜 Read a book whose MC's first name begins with a letter in HORNS.
The Best Lies 3/9/20 (MC Remy)
It took 30 years to remove lead-based paint from the bridge. In the 1930s, the bridge was coated with a primer that was two-thirds lead. Architects intended the lead-based paint to protect the steel structure from corrosion, but later learned that lead is harmful to humans/the environment. A massive cleanup effort to remove all the lead-based paint from the bridge started in 1965 and ended in 1995. Today, zinc-based primer paint is used instead. The Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District calls the zinc a 鈥渟acrificial metal鈥 that protects the steel from rust.
