Who is reading something special for Asian American and Pacific Islander month?

For non-fiction lovers, there are a lot of options.聽 Here are three lists (with surprisingly very little overlap!):

I keep telling myself I'm going to keep it simple and keep my lists short, and then my list grows and grows and grows!

I just finished two books that would be perfect for AAPI reading:
The Good, the Bad, and the Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto - more Aunties ridiculousness, set in Jakarta during their Chinese New Year celebration.聽 I enjoyed this, but it was very very silly. This is third in the series, and you do need to read them in order for the full effect.
Hana Khan Carries On by Uzma Jalaluddin - I did not enjoy this book at all, but it fulfills a Challenge category (24 year old character) and it's all about the experience of being an Indian-Canadian Muslim young woman living in Toronto.

I'm planning to read several graphic novels this month:

Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang - recommended by Laura in our weekly check in, and sounds great - I immediately put it on hold.

Silk, Vol. 1: Sinister written by Robbie Thompson - it's not written by an AAPI author, which normally is my #1 criterion, but it's an Asian superhero and those are rare, and there is an Asian artist involved.聽聽

Silk, Vol. 1: Threats and Menaces written by Maurene Goo - when I was searching for the previous volume in my library catalog, I cam across this one, too. Will I read one or both? Who knows!! I do enjoy Goo's YA romances, so I'm really interested to see what she does with a Marvel character.

Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom by Tsugumi Ohba- this is Japanese, so not exactly Asian AMERICAN, but I'm counting it anyway.聽 I'm using this for "book turned into a musical."

And maybe (MAYBE) this year is the year that I finally start reading the Amulet series, starting with The Stonekeeper, by Kazu Kibuishi.

A few books that would fill various challenge categories:

A Quantum Love Story by Mike Chen - I have had this book on hold for MONTHS and I FINALLY just got a copy from the library!聽 I didn't mean to read it for AAPI month, but my library made me wait until the end of April, so here we are.聽 (I ALSO just got the electronic version on Libby after a lengthy hold! When it rains, it pours!!聽 I'm definitely聽reading this book this month! The Universe has SPOKEN.) This doesn't seem to fill any open challenge category for me, but it would work for "published in 2024."

Mrs. Martin鈥檚 Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan - by my count, this is Courtney Milan's 24th book.聽 If you know otherwise, I honestly don't even want to hear it, LOL I just want to get this category checked off.聽聽

Wonton Terror by Vivien Chien - I love the Noodle House mysteries and it's been too long since I read one!!聽 聽I'm using this for "cozy mystery" in AtY - I don't see a Popsugar category for it.

The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng - for "unreliable narrator" (which I've already filled - oops!) and AtY's "raining cats and dogs"

And some just-published books that I've got on hold and I will definitely read, but I may-or-may-not get to read in May:

Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier - just published! I'm excited to read it, but I don't know if I'll get a copy in time to read it in May.

Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee - just published! I'm excited to read it, but I don't know if I'll get a copy in time to read it in May. Looks like there is a copy available on the New Books shelves in a nearby branch, so I might be in luck!

Shanghailanders by Juli Min- This is a debut聽(I think?) and it sounded really interesting; again, no idea if I'll get it in time. That cover is just so intriguing! It reminds me of Whitehead's Harlem Shuffle.

ASAP by Axie Oh - just because I enjoyed XOXO so much.聽 Will I get it in May? who knows!

And I've got three collections of poetry lined up (although I seem to be getting tired of reading poetry so I don't know if I'll get through all these):

The Kingdom of Surfaces: Poems by Sally Wen Mao

The City in Which I Love You by Li-Young Lee

This Overflowing Light: Selected Poems by Rin Ishigaki (another author who is Japanese, not American)

K.L. Middleton (theunapologeticbookworm) | 816 comments I don't know if I will have a chance to get to it in May, but I'm really interested in reading Hawaii's Story by Hawaii's Queen, by Liliuokalani.

Ron | 2650 comments Thanks for those nonfiction lists, Nadine. Some of the books on them look pretty good so I might have to consider one or two.

message 4: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 2 comments I celebrate this every May, and pay no attention to the American bit. If they are Asian ancestry, anything goes.
I plan on reading
I am a cat-Natsume
Daughter of the moon goddess-Tan
Pachinko-Lee
A view from the stars-Liu
The murder of mr ma-Nee
Here after-Lin
Everything i never told you-Ng
Hurt you-Lee
Seolmates-Lee
The kamogawa food detectives-Kashiwai

Happy Reading!!

Jennifer W | 1775 comments I seem to have a lot of Asian books floating around these days (I'm with Lisa, it all counts, it's exposing me to new cultures). Realistically, I plan to get to Dust Child and The Woman in the White Kimono, both of which I already have out from the library. I'm not even sure if they fit challenge prompts, they just looked like I must read them now!! If I want to be ambitious, my horror BIPOC author is Alma Katsu, though I haven't decided which book of hers I want to read. I also have a graphic novel that I bought a couple of months ago that would work for the month, Tokyo Rose - Zero Hour (A Graphic Novel): A Japanese American Woman's Persecution and Ultimate Redemption after World War II.

message 6: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 1775 comments So totally random AAPI viewing... my daughter has been watching Amphibia, a cartoon on Disney+ of a girl who gets transported to a frog world and is trying to find her way home. It's not completely a "kiddy" cartoon, but there's also no swearing or sexual innuendos, etc. Spoiler alert, she makes it home eventually. While she was in Frog Land, it mentioned a few times that she was Thai, but it didn't really mean much. Now that she's home, her Thai-American culture has become more of the story. Totally not what I was expecting!

message 7: by Traci (new)

Traci (tracibartz) | 69 comments I have a bunch on my list, and also include general Asian descent.

The Mountains Sing
The Gift of Rain
How to Pronounce Knife: Stories
The Diving Pool: Three Novellas
ASAP - ps: k-pop; like Nadine, I wanted more from the XOXO story!
Vera Wong's Unsolicited Advice for Murderers
Human Acts
This One Summer
The Goodbye Cat - ps: animal POV
The Astonishing Color of After - ps: written during NaNoWriMo

I'm going to stop there, though I have 23 total options I have listed now, I'm going to focus on those, and see if I get to more!

Ashley Marie | 1027 comments Ooooh yay!

I'm aiming to read He Who Drowned the World and Iron Widow. Possibly others, but definitely those two!

message 11: by Teri (new)

Teri (teria) | 1554 comments I'm getting the following from the library. If I keep it to 3 books, maybe I'll get it done.

XOXO by Axie Oh
Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
Long Live the Tribe of Fatherless Girls by T Kira Madden - author is a Jewish Chinese Hawaiian American (even covers Jewish American Heritage Month, also in May)

Jen W. (piratenami) | 496 comments Here's what I have planned for this month in terms of Asian and Asian American authors:

When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller (for PopSugar's book recommended by a librarian, Robot Librarian's Newbery Medal winner)

The Marquis Who Mustn't by Courtney Milan (for PopSugar's self-published author)

Tales from the Caf茅 by Toshikazu Kawaguchi (for PopSugar's book set in a travel destination on your bucket list)

The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo (Robot Librarian's book from your favorite genre written by a BIPOC author, could work for PopSugar's book that came out in a year that ends with "24")

The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean (not currently for a prompt, could also work for PopSugar's book that came out in a year that ends with "24")

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki (not currently for a prompt, could work as PopSugar's fiction book by a trans or nonbinary author)

The Poppy War by R.F. Kuang (Robot Librarian's book about/taking place during a war that is NOT WWI or WWII)

And I may tackle this nonfiction if I have time:
An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong (Robot Librarian's Nonfiction: The 500s)

she was my self-pub author too!! I haven't read "Marquis" yet, but I loved The Duke Who Didn't

message 18: by Jennifer W (new)

Jennifer W | 1775 comments Stayed up way too late last night finishing The Woman in the White Kimono. It was not what I was expecting! I had expected a Japanese woman falls in love with a US soldier and they have a baby that gets confiscated and sent to an orphanage and then everyone spends the rest of the book trying to track down the long lost baby. Gets way darker than that in ways I'd never heard of before, but happens to be true! Highly recommended! First 5 star read of the year!

My May AAPI reading wrap-up! I had a great month and read a lot of great books by Asian and (one) Pacific Islander authors. I still have a few more books by my bedside waiting for me, some of those I'll get to and some will go back to the library and wait for another time.

I read:
Lunar New Year Love Story by Gene Luen Yang - this was so charming, I'd recommend it to anyone.

Silk, Vol. 1: Threats and Menaces written by Maurene Goo - I never even heard of this superhero, but I SUPER enjoyed this book!!! I plan to read the rest of this series (sadly not written by Goo).

Death Note, Vol. 1: Boredom by Tsugumi Ohba- my "book turned into a musical" - this was better than I expected, and better than the anime show I'd seen.

A Quantum Love Story by Mike Chen - I was SO looking forward to this, but I found it kinda underwhelming. In the author note, he says he started this as a short story a long time ago and only recently re-worked it, and I think that might explain why it felt so uneven. It starts off as one thing, and then it gets repetitive, and then it becomes something else entirely. Also, not much of a "love story"!! I'd recommend it if you're into time travel stories.

Mrs. Martin鈥檚 Incomparable Adventure by Courtney Milan - I used this as my "24th book by an author" - it was ... okay. 聽

The Gift of Rain by Tan Twan Eng - I absolutely loved this!!!! Five stars. So moving.

Dragonfruit by Makiia Lucier - this was a lot of fun! I wish the ending was a bit better, but it was a great reading experience overall.

ASAP by Axie Oh - so much fun!!!

Forbidden - I started this in May but finished in June. This book was dreadful. Horrible writing, super clunky and so overly melodramatic. I regret the time I spent reading this.

This Overflowing Light: Selected Poems by Rin Ishigaki - these poems were fantastic!! I'm so glad I sought this out.

And I am still reading (almost done!!):
Kill Her Twice by Stacey Lee - this has been great (but I'm not loving it quite as much as the previous book I read by Lee, The Downstairs Girl) I am almost done and right now I have NO IDEA who the killer is.

The Kingdom of Surfaces: Poems by Sally Wen Mao - meh. I've got nothing good or bad to say.

Jen W. (piratenami) | 496 comments My wrap-up! I didn't quite get to everything on my list, but I got to a lot of it.

When You Trap a Tiger by Tae Keller - I loved this, it was so sweet and it made me cry.

The Marquis Who Mustn't by Courtney Milan - Also loved this, I wanted to give the male lead a hug.

Tales from the Caf茅 by Toshikazu Kawaguchi - I wasn't originally going to carry on with this series after I was lukewarm on the first, but I actually enjoyed this much more.

The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo - Every book in this series has been excellent, and this was no exception.

The Return of Ellie Black by Emiko Jean - A decent thriller. I wished for more character development for the lead detective, but enjoyed it overall.

Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki - Such an odd little genre mashup of a book, but I really liked it.

message 21: by Anshita (new)

Anshita (_book_freak) | 245 comments Although I didn't read Let's Go Let's Go Let's Go by Cleo Qian in May, it's a book that 'explore the alienated, technology-mediated lives of restless Asian and Asian-American women today.' written by Cleo who was born to immigrant parents from China.

message 22: by Aquaria (new)

Aquaria | 53 comments I read Emiko jean's The Return of Ellie Black. A good thriller.
