“One's country of residence dictated one's experience of time over a year, over a week. The ebbs and flows of energy and rest.”
Juli Min, Shanghailanders

“Eko felt like she had, for so many years, shape-shifted and adjusted and improved, pushed the limits of her personality, the outlines of her personhood, so much so that she was stretched and had become shapeless. Thin. Amoebic. A thing could be formed and re-formed, but what was its essence, its core shape? Maybe only a mother could know.”
Juli Min, Shanghailanders

“It was as if she could hear the roar of the sea in her ears, though the window was closed and there was no sound in the room. Dr. Bernard waited. There would be no one else left on this earth who would remember, who would know, how it was, how it used to be. And then there were all the things she herself didn't know, all the things she hadn't been told.”
Juli Min, Shanghailanders
