how did it end?
We hereby conduct this post-mortem

Come one, come all
It's happenin' again
The empathetic hunger descends

Lost the game of chance, what are the chances?

“ I love you like all-fire. â€

This book is torture of the worst kind because no matter how miserable it makes you feel you just can’t stop reading it. I wish I could say it ended happily, but if you’ve read catching fire, then you know that it is simply impossible.

After fully processing the ending of this book, I have concluded that it is by far the most tragic ending in the series. The last thirty pages of Sunrise on the Reaping were some of the most painful things I’ve ever experienced. See, in the original trilogy, although Katniss has suffered beyond imagination, she still got to live the rest of her life with Peeta and her babies. As for Coriolanus, he also managed to escape with what he truly desired, which was ultimate power. So, in the end, both Katniss and Coriolanus had a purpose, something to keep them going and to make life worth the living. But for Haymitch, by the end he literally had nothing yet to live for and yet Snow forced him to continue his life anyway, trapped in the victor’s village with nothing but a knife in one hand and a bottle in the other. Haymitch may have been crowned victor, but Snow is the real winner of his games.

Understanding Haymitch’s backstory through this book brought so much depth to his character traits and actions we see in the original trilogy. Everything, even his simple mannerisms, had been shaped through his time in the arena and through those he had lost. In my mind, Haymitch is no longer the crazy, drunk victor from twelve; but rather a normal guy who's experience with the abnormal changed him for the worse. Now, I know that every time a reread the original books, he will seem like a completely different person to me. Through Katniss' pov, we saw Haymitch from the perspective of an outsider; or someone who didn't truly understand his story. But through this book, we see Haymitch for who he truly is, and I believe that has made all the difference.

“ They will not use my tears for their entertainment. â€
⤷ this quote reminds me of when Peeta said he wants to be more than just a piece in the capitol's games 😭

“ Fire is catching, she’d say, but if this one burns down the arena, I say good riddance. "
⤷ I loved all of nods to the original books 🥺

" Nothing you can take from me was ever worth keeping, and she is the most precious thing I’ve ever known. "
⤷ the covey's songs sure stick in everybody's heads, huh

“ Dove color: Warm gray with a slight purplish or pinkish tint. Her color. Her bird. Her name. â€
⤷ ugh she's so similar to lucy gray 😔

“ Every year for my birthday, I will get a new pair of tributes, one girl and one boy, to mentor to their deaths. Another sunrise on the reaping. â€
⤷ as if Haymitch's life isn't tragic enough... of course the reaping is on his birthday 💔"

I don't understand how every time I read Laura's books I cry. She needs to tone down her writing or something. I've never read books from an author whose books make me cry like this. I've also never cried over more than one book from the same author soo. Also I need another book from this series like now. I need to know what happens with the yk. ]]>
