Patricia Harman has spent over thirty years caring for women as a midwife, first as a lay-midwife, delivering babies in cabins and on communal farms in West Virginia, and later as a nurse-midwife in teaching hospitals and in a community hospital birthing center.

She spent over a decade in the sixties and seventies in her wild youth living in rural communes in Washington (Tolstoy Farm), Connecticut (The Committee for Non-Violent Action) and Minnesota (Free Folk). During the Vietnam years, she and her husband, Tom Harman, traveled the country, often hitch-hiking, as they looked for a place to settle. In 1974 they purchased a farm with a group of like-minded friends on top of a ridge in Roane County, West Virginia. Here on the commune, they bui

Trisha by Robert Specht is a true story of a young teacher in the late 1920s who goes to Alaska by herself and is confronted by the cold, by the crudeness of everything, by racism against native Americans and by the threat of one particular man who falls for her. I've read this book over the last 10 years 3 times. So you know I like it! (less)

I'm sure someone in the National Holiday Office in Washington or wherever knew that. HEHEHE

Ok, best thing about being a writer? You can make stories in your head. I've always done it. When I was a little girl that's how I put myself to sleep, only the stories were all about me...a princess of course.

I have done lots of creative things, written songs, played the piano and the guitar, done photography and painted and drew, but writing is both elaborate and simple. The ideas pop into my head at the oddest times: like as I'm driving in the car or getting ready to go somewhere or reading a book. Of course , there's lots of research and then you must edit, edit, edit, but I even enjoy that. (less)

On being relevant as an author.

I'm a retired midwife and author of 8 books and trying to finish one, but in times like these it doesn't feel relevant. Before I started writing, I did macrame, jewelry, photography, wrote songs, played guitar and piano, drew pictures on wood and painted...Did I worry that it was relevant? No, I did it for fun. If you are bored you can look up my books on my website or Amazon. They are mostly memo Read more of this blog post »
